THE STORYLINE –
ULM returns to action with Saturday's Sun Belt matchup at App State after its six-game win streak was snapped at Coastal Carolina in the SBC opener Thursday night.

Freshman forward Thomas Howell scored in double digits for the third-straight game with 12 and had a team-best six rebounds.

Four of the last five games between ULM and App State have been decided by six points or less.

All 10 of the meetings between ULM and App State have occurred during Sun Belt Conference play. Due to the COVID-modified intra-divisional schedule format in 2020-21, the two programs did not play each other.

THE STARTING FIVE –
• ULM looks to rebound from its loss in the Sun Belt opener at Coastal Carolina and get back to its winning ways. The Warhawks started the 2020-21 adjusted SBC schedule 2-0 and were 2-0 to start conference play in 2018-19. ULM won nine conference games in back-to-back seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

• Four different Warhawks, Nika Metskhvarishvili the most recent to add his name to the list, Russell Harrison, Andre Jones and Russell Harrison, have led the Warhawks in scoring three times in 2021-22.

• The Warhawks' high-powered scoring offense has run into challenges on the road with a 67.3 scoring average in seven true road games. ULM's two highest-scoring outputs came in their back-to-back road wins: 82 points at SFA and 80 points at Lamar.

• Four starters, led by senior Russell Harrison's 17.6 points-per-game average, had scoring averages in double digits during the month of December. Andre Jones checked in at 14.6 ppg., Koreem Ozier at 11.3 and Thomas Howell at 10.4.

• ULM returns home to Fant-Ewing Coliseum for its Sun Belt Conference home opener against Little Rock on Thursday, Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Arkansas State visits for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Head coach Dustin Kerns is one of 25 coaches who made a postseason appearance with two or more teams in their first two seasons as head coach at each coaching stop. After a 21-year wait, App State made its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history in 2021. The Mountaineers won four-straight games in the Sun Belt Tournament to punch the program's ticket to the tournament.

With 12 players returning from last season's team, App State returned more than 90 percent of its points from 2020-21. The Mountaineers' 92.3 percent – or 64.9 points per game returning – ranked 17th nationally.

Senior guard Adrian Delph had a career night on Nov. 22 against Delaware, finishing with career highs in points (39), field goals made (13) and 3-pointers made (7). Delph started the game a perfect 10-of-10 from the field. His scoring output was the most points scored by a Mountaineer since Ronshad Shabazz tallied 47 points at ULM on Feb. 28, 2019, a mark is tied for the 12th-highest single-game scoring output in program history.

App State concluded the 2020-21 regular season with a 13-11 overall mark, the first time the Mountaineers ended the regular season with back-to-back winning records since the 2009-10 season (20-11) and 2010-11 campaign (15-14). App State finished the regular season in 2019-20 with a 17-14 mark.

App State dropped its Sun Belt Conference opener to the Ragin' Cajuns, 71-55, at home Thursday, with the Ragin' Cajuns jumping out to a 27-9 lead and 43-19 advantage at the break. Delph drained five 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 17 points while adding seven rebounds. CJ Huntley also reached double figures with 13 points, to go along with four rebounds. Michael Almonacy had eight points and a season-best six assists. James Lewis Jr. pulled down a team-high eight rebounds (5 offensive) and added a pair of steals.

ULM/APP STATE SERIES NOTES –
The Warhawks lead the all-time series, 6-4, with all games occurring since the 2014-15 season when the Mountaineers joined the Sun Belt Conference. However, Appalachian State had traveled to Monroe, Louisiana, prior to the two teams competing as conference opponents for the 1979 Pacemaker Classic during the Bobby Cremins era. The two teams did not meet in the tournament bracket.

ULM has won two of the last three meetings, falling in the 2019-20 regular-season finale, 61-57, in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Due to the COVID-modified intra-divisional schedule format in 2020-21, the two programs did not play each other. Four of the last five games have been decided by six points or less.

Keith Richard is 6-4 vs. Appalachian State as ULM head coach.
