MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team dominated the third quarter, 28-6, to rally and pull away from Alcorn State, picking up a 74-60 win Saturday afternoon at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
"I'm proud of our effort tonight and excited for our players to get a W," ULM head coach
Brooks Donald Williams said. "The response out of halftime was big. We continue to grow as a team and I can't wait to see this group take the court again Wednesday."
Sophomore
Gara Beth Self knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with a season-high 18 points to lead four Warhawks (3-7 overall) in double figures. True freshman
Katlyn Manuel tallied a career-high 15 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Second-year freshman
Kyren Whittington added 13 points and true freshman
Bre Sutton had 11. Cayla Obillo had a season-high 15 points to lead Alcorn (0-6).
Trailing 31-24 at halftime, ULM flipped the game in the third quarter. Alcorn extended the lead to eight at 34-26 before the Warhawks closed the quarter on a 26-3 run, which included a 17-0 spurt to go in front. Manuel started the run with a layup before Self buried her third 3-pointer of the game. After another bucket from Manuel, Self was fouled on a triple attempt and knocked down all three free throws to give ULM a 36-34 lead with 5:56 left in the quarter. Whittington poured in five straight points to extend the lead to 41-34.
After Alcorn hit a 3-pointer to get back within six at 43-37, Self answered on the next possession with her fourth trey, sparking a 9-0 spurt to end the quarter. ULM led 52-37 after three quarters.
Alcorn closed as close as nine in the fourth quarter, first at 56-47 and again at 69-60. However, the Warhawks kept the Lady Braves at arm's length and picked up the 74-60 win.
ULM was sluggish in the first quarter, playing without Whittington due to early foul trouble. The Warhawks hit just 1-of-11 shots in the first quarter as Alcorn went on a 14-0 run to take a 16-4 lead with 1:54 left in the quarter. ULM used free throws from second-year freshmen Sassy McDowell and
Gracen Williams to close the quarter to pull within nine, 16-7. ULM did not have a field goal for the final 7:27 of the first quarter.
The Warhawks started to pick up the pace in the second quarter. ULM used a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to three at 22-19 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Self. However, the Lady Braves picked up a quick 7-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Obillo, to extend the lead back to 10, 29-19. Sutton finished a traditional three-point play and scored again off a steal and layup to get back within five, 29-24.
Despite the awful first quarter from the field, ULM shot a season-high 45.8% from the floor (22-of-48) and hit 61.9% from the free-throw line (26-of-42). Alcorn shot 35.8% (19-of-53) from the floor and 73.7% from the free-throw line (14-of-19). ULM outrebounded Alcorn, 40-30.
