MONROE, La. - ULM aims for consecutive wins when the Warhawks entertain Champion Christian at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. ULM is 3-7 overall after Saturday's 74-60 win over Alcorn State, while Champion Christian is 5-0 and has played five other exhibition games, with only one against a NCAA Division I opponent (Tarleton State).
Wednesday's game will air on ESPN+ with Chris Harris (play-by-play) and Mike Vining (analyst) on the call. The game will also be broadcast on 1680 AM KRJO and 997thelegend.com on the Warhawk Radio Network from Learfield with
Mike Hammett on the play-by-play.
Saturday's game is the first-ever meeting between ULM and Champion Christian. The 2021-22 season marks just the third season of existence for the Champion Christian women's basketball program. The Tigers won the 2021 NCCAA Division II national championship.
Sophomore
Gara Beth Self poured in a season-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers, in Saturday's win over Alcorn. She hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter to cut into the first-half deficit before knocking down a third trey early in the third quarter. She sunk three free throws to push ULM into the lead. After Alcorn hit a triple to end ULM's 17-0 run, she responded at the other end with her fourth 3-pointer to continue to push the momentum to the Warhawks. She added five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
True freshman
Katlyn Manuel posted her first career double-double with a career-high 15 points and 10 rebounds against Alcorn. Manuel shot 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from the free throw line. She added a career-high three blocks. She is the fourth different Warhawk to have a double-double this year, joining true freshman
Amaya Ford, sophomore
Linda van Schaik and true freshman Vici Woods.
The key to Saturday's win was a 28-6 third quarter in favor of ULM. The Warhawks shot a blistering 81.8% from the field in the frame (9-of-11) while limiting Alcorn to 15.4% shooting (2-of-13). After shooting 42.8% (6-of-14) from the free-throw line in the first half, ULM shot 71.4% from the stripe in the second half (20-of-28).
Champion Christian is 5-0 to begin the season. The Tigers have also played five exhibition contests entering Wednesday's game, which is another exhibition for Champion. The Tigers are coming off back-to-back wins against Dallas Christian, 72-57, on Friday and Arkansas Baptist, 81-45, on Saturday. The other wins that have counted for the Tigers this season have come against Texas A&M-Texarkana (93-79), Campellsville-Harrodsburg (70-56) and Bacone (84-52).
