MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt with a 2-0 loss in the final game of the three-game series against Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina (7-9, 1-2 Sun Belt) handed the Warhawks just their third shutout of the season, limiting ULM to two hits over the course of the game. Kaitlin Beasley Polko (5-3) tossed the complete game, two-hit shutout, allowing three runs and converting one strikeout along the way.
The Chanticleers put the first run on the board in the third inning when Mackenzie Beyer led off the inning with a solo home run over the centerfield wall.
Two innings later, a sacrifice fly by Stavi Augur brought home Paige Rivas for the second run. The Coastal Carolina inning began with a walk by Kayla Rosado, who was replaced on base by Rivas as a pinch runner. Two batters later, Makiya Thomas dropped a double into left centerfield, moving Rivas to third. Augur brought the second run home on the sacrifice fly that also moved Thomas to third.
Madelyn Fletcher and
Kennedy Johnson each went 1-for-3 at the plate for ULM (8-12, 2-1 Sun Belt).
Kassidy Giddens (1-2) suffered the loss for the Warhawks, hurling 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and one walk while picking up two strikeouts.
Murphy Williams came out of the bullpen to toss 2 1/3 innings, allowing two walks and striking out one Chanticleer hitter.
ULM continues its play in the Sun Belt Conference when it heads to Statesboro, Georgia for a clash with Georgia Southern on March 20-21. The first game of the Saturday, March 20 doubleheader begins at 12 p.m.
