ULM Earns First Sun Belt Win of Season, Downs Texas State, 5-2

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The ULM tennis team earned its first Sun Belt Conference win of the season and extended its current winning streak to three on Monday, March 14, when the Warhawks completed a 5-2 victory over Texas State.

ULM (6-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) equaled its season-long winning streak—established in February with victories against Lamar, Stephen F. Austin and Lousiana Tech—after wins last weekend against Alcorn State, 7-0, and Grambling, 7-0, on March 6 and March 7, respectively. The Warhawks look to continue the momentum on Tuesday, March 16 when they clash with UT Arlington at 10 a.m.

A Warhawks victory on Tuesday would mark the first four-match winning streak since March 2019 when they defeated Jackson State (March 10), Georgia Southern (March 14), Georgia State (March 17) and Texas State (March 24) in succession. Those four wins were part of an eight-match winning streak for ULM, which began on February 7, 2019.

The Warhawks opened Monday's match against Texas State with a victory in No. 3 doubles by the tandem of Jimena Paula Garbino and Daniela Hernandez after Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez and Andrea Fuchs were forced to retire from the game. The Bobcats bounced back with a 6-1 win in No. 1 doubles as Rishona Israel-Lewis and Hana Kvapilova defeated Hala Badwy and Oleksandra Balaba.

With the doubles point on the line, ULM's second-seeded pair of Drousile Dzeubou and Madalina Grigoriu fought past Chacadya Israel-Lewis and Nikita Pradeep to claim a 6-3 victory.

Kvapilova quickly tied the score for Texas State with a 7-5, 6-3 win in No. 1 singles over Badwy. The back-and-forth battle continued as Grigoriu picked up her 13 win of the season by virtue of a 6-1, 6-0 win over Renata Gonzalez in No. 5 singles.

With ULM leading the match 2-1, Rishona Israel-Lewis pulled the Bobcats even with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Dzeubou in a meeting of No. 2 singles. ULM claimed the final three points and earned the decisive victory. The first of those victories came from third-seeded Oleksandra Balaba, who defeated Pradeep by scores of 6-3, 6-0.

Hernandez clinched the team win for ULM as the No. 6 seed fought past Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory. Garbino tallied her second win of the afternoon by rebounding from an opening set loss to post a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win over Chacadya Israel-Lewis in the fourth-seeded pairings.
