RUSTON, La. – No. 23 Louisiana Tech scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to regain the lead and the Bulldogs held off ULM, 9-7, Tuesday night at J.C. Love Field and Pat Patterson Park.
The Bulldogs took advantage of 10 bases on balls issued by ULM pitching. Taylor Young led LA Tech with three hits and three RBIs. ULM was led by
Ryan Humeniuk's three hits and two RBIs.
Trace Henry and
Travis Washburn also had three hits each.
Nicholas Judice struggled on the mound in the start for ULM. He walked three batters and hit another with a pitch in facing just five Bulldogs, giving up two runs in 1/3 of an inning.
Cole Martin came in to the game with runners on the corners and one out but forced Ben Brantley to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the deficit at 2-0 after one inning.
LA Tech loaded the bases in the second inning off two singles with a walk in between. A walk issued to Hunter Wells scored forced home Hasler for the 3-0 lead.
ULM got on the board in the fourth inning.
Andrew Beesley led off the inning with a double and scored on Humeniuk's double to cut the gap to 3-1.
Louisiana Tech answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Parker Bates reached on an error with two outs, allowing Wells to score for the 4-1 lead.
The Warhawks struck for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Beesley's fielder's choice allowed Henry to score and Humeniuk hit an RBI double for the second consecutive inning, plating Beesley once again to trim the Bulldog lead to 4-3.
ULM tied the game up in the sixth inning. Washburn opened the inning with a hustle double on a bloop hit down the right field line. A sacrifice bunt by
Michael Cervantes moved Washburn to third, and pinch hitter
Grant Schulz's sacrifice fly brought Washburn home to knot the game at 4.
LA Tech wasted little time in answering. Young's RBI double scored Alex Ray to put the Bulldogs on top 5-4. Bates added a single to left to plate Young and give LA Tech the 6-4 advantage after six innings.
ULM claimed its only lead in the top of the seventh inning. After
Mason Holt reached on an error and Beesley singled,
Danny DeSimone launched a 3-run home run to left center to put ULM up 7-6.
However, Tech answered back with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Young doubled off the centerfield wall to drive in a pair of runs to give the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead. Wells followed with an RBI single for a 9-7 advantage.
ULM was unable to take advantage of leadoff hitters reaching base in the eighth and ninth innings, as LA Tech held on for the 9-7 win.
Tyler Follis (1-1) pitched 2/3 of an inning out of the bullpen for LA Tech to earn the win, while
Carson Orton (0-1) took the loss for ULM after giving up three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Kyle Griffen (1) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for Tech to pick up the save.
ULM opens a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at 6 p.m. Friday at Texas State.
