STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern struck for four consecutive hits to open the second inning, plating three runs and went on to the 4-1 win over ULM Saturday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium to claim the series victory.
The Warhawks outhit the Eagles for the second consecutive game, 10-7, and didn't commit any errors while walking just one batter, but the Eagles used the big inning to score the victory.
"I'm proud of the way our guys competed today," ULM head coach
Michael Federico said. "
Cam Barlow gave us a chance. You look at the stat sheet and it doesn't add up. We had more hits than them. We didn't walk as many people as them. They made more errors than we did. We played an errorless game. But they had three more runs than we did.
"We've got to find ways to fight and claw and scratch and do whatever we can," Federico said. "We'll keep fighting and trying to figure it out. Almost every one of our starters had a hit in the game. We had a couple big walks that were involved in there as well. We just didn't get the W."
ULM opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning.
Trace Henry doubled to the left centerfield gap to lead off the game and scored on
Mason Holt's RBI double into the left field corner for the 1-0 lead.
Georgia Southern answered in the second inning. Noah Ledford, Austin Thompson, Jason Swan and Jarrett Brown hit consecutive singles to open the inning, with Brown's single scoring Ledford and Thompson for the 2-1 advantage. A wild pitch from ULM starting pitcher
Cam Barlow allowed Swan to score for the 3-1 lead.
"It wasn't the big hit that they got with extra base stuff," Federico said. "They did what they needed to do."
In the third inning, Ledford hit a one-out solo home run to extend the Eagle lead to 4-1.
Barlow and the Warhawk bullpen kept the Eagles at bay the rest of the way with no serious scoring threats. ULM put runners on second and third in the third inning but was unable to score. The Warhawks had two more runners on in the fourth inning, but again, couldn't scratch across a run. ULM had two hits in the eighth inning but
Mason Holt was thrown out at third base while trying to move from first to third on
Andrew Beesley's single to right field. The Warhawks put runners on the corners in the ninth inning, but Holt grounded out to end the game.
"We didn't execute on a couple of offensive plays and didn't capitalize on some things," Federico said. "We had some opportunities to score some other runs."
Chase Dollander (4-1) earned the win for Georgia Southern, throwing six innings and allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts. Nick Jones earned his second save of the series and ninth of the season by throwing the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up no runs on three hits.
Barlow (3-4) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
Trey Lindsay,
Reid Goleman and
Justin King each threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
Holt and
Michael Cervantes had two hits each for ULM while Ledford and Brown had two hits each for Georgia Southern.
The series concludes at 11 a.m. Sunday. Links to live video, audio and stats are available on the baseball schedule page at ULMWarhawks.com.
