MONROE, La. – Little Rock used a pair of solo home runs, one from Tyler Williams and another from Nathan Lyons, to claim a 2-0 win over ULM in the series opener Saturday at Warhawk Field.
In a pitchers' duel, Little Rock's Hayden Arnold (5-3) got the best of ULM's
Ty Barnes (1-3). Arnold threw seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits with a season-high matching 10 strikeouts. Barnes matched a season-high with seven innings, giving up the two solo shots with a season-best seven strikeouts. The Trojans' Aaron Barkley threw two perfect innings to notch his fifth save.
"Solo home runs, you always say that they're not really going to hurt you, but you look back and the solo in the first, that was the ball game," ULM head coach
Michael Federico said. "It's disappointing. That's a couple times that Ty's had some good outings for us with no reward."
Williams hit his solo home run in the top of the first inning, put the Trojans (16-14 overall, 7-3 Sun Belt Conference) on top, 1-0. Lyons doubled the lead with a solo blast in the fifth inning. Both home runs came with two outs in the inning.
"You're going to give up home runs," Federico said. "You're going to give up some of those things. But we've got to be able to scratch and claw and get back into it."
ULM's (11-18, 3-10) best scoring chance came in the seventh inning.
Danny DeSimone picked up ULM's fourth and final hit with one out in the inning on a single to center.
Ryan Humeniuk followed with the only base on balls issued by Arnold. Pinch hitter
Andrew Beesley subsequently struck out and DeSimone was thrown out stealing third to end the threat.
"Arnold got into a rhythm," Federico said. "He struck us out 10 times. I didn't think his stuff was 10-strikeout worthy. I thought he was good but we chased some elevated pitches and we chased some balls in the dirt. We've got to do a better job of strike zone discipline with that."
Henry, Humeniuk and Cleland had the other hits for ULM. Noah Dickerson had two doubles for Little Rock.
The series continues at 1 p.m. Sunday at Warhawk Field. Links to live audio and stats are available on the baseball schedule page at ULMWarhawks.com.
