MONROE, La. – ULM grinded out a game one win, 2-0, and then the bats came to life in game two, winning 11-1 in seven innings, as the Warhawks completed a doubleheader and weekend series sweep of Southern on Sunday afternoon at Warhawk Field.
It marks the first series sweep of the season for ULM (17-19 overall).
The Warhawk pitching staff turned in a dazzling weekend, allowing just two runs in the three games combined, while Southern (11-24) committed 12 errors over the three games, including five in the series finale.
In the first game, third-year freshman left hander
Cam Barlow (5-4) pitched a career-high seven shutout innings, allowing five hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
"He definitely got those quick outs," ULM head coach
Michael Federico said. "Even early on, he was throwing a bunch of strikes and they were fouling a couple balls off. He was just locating some fastballs. A lot of his strikeouts today were with the fastballs.
Britt McKay caught a good game with him. I don't know if it's because they go hunting together or what, but they've been in sync together the last two or three times that they've been together."
Trey Lindsay threw two scoreless innings for his third save.
ULM was unable to come up with much offense against Southern starter Jerome Bohannon II (1-3) or reliever Dimitri Frank.
Britt McKay led off the fourth inning with a single to left field and later scored on
Ryan Humeniuk's sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead. The Warhawks added an insurance run in the eighth inning when
Travis Washburn's RBI single plated
Ryan Cupit for the 2-0 advantage.
"Bohannon's got a good arm," Federico said. "We knew he'd struggled with his command a little bit. We had some moments where we could have busted it open a little bit and we didn't execute some small things that really cost us."
However, Federico was pleased with finding a way to win a low-scoring contest.
"It was never like there was any panic going on," Federico said. "That was important to me. We had so many opportunities to break that game open. I'm proud that we won the game. Barlow gave us a quality start. Lindsay probably didn't have his best stuff, but we won. It was nice to scratch that run in the eighth inning to expand the lead and win the 6-7-8 innings."
In game two, Southern struck first with an RBI single by Tremaine Spears in the top of the first inning to score AJ Walter. However, senior left hander
Cole Martin (1-1) settled in and threw five innings, giving up just the one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts for his first win of the year.
"He was a little bit out of rhythm, but I thought he persevered through it," Federico said. "He gave our offense a chance and he did a remarkable job. I'm really proud of him. That's the most pitches he's thrown since his surgery."
"It felt good to finally get that weekend start under my belt after being here for three years," Martin said. "I wish I didn't have to wait a whole game to start because the anticipation was killing me. I came out and I tried to do what I knew I could. My rhythm was a little off in the first inning just because I was so used to having the wrist band and moving quicker, so I was kind of slow. Once we got it back rolling, I felt good out there."
ULM finally got the offense on track in the third inning when
Grant Schulz singled and Humeniuk brought him home with an RBI single to tie the game at 1.
The Warhawks broke the game open in the fourth inning. With nobody on and two outs,
Danny DeSimone singled to left and moved to second on a passed ball.
Travis Washburn doubled to left center to score DeSimone for the 2-1 lead. Schulz followed with an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw home. Wurm brought Schulz in with an RBI double to center, and Deaville hooked a ball inside the third base bag and rattled it down to the left field corner for RBI double for the 5-1 lead.
"I wish our hitters would understand how stubborn they are sometimes in our offense," Federico said. "Three of the four runs came with backside hits. Just simple, not trying to do too much. A couple of them we ended up getting to second base because we read the throw. We did a remarkable job. That was awesome. It was fun to get that going, especially with two outs."
ULM added two more runs in the fifth inning as Southern committed three errors in the frame. Schulz had his third hit of the game, an RBI single, for the only hit of the inning.
Landon Cato scored on an error for the 7-1 lead.
In the sixth inning,
Mason Holt hit an RBI single to score
Trace Henry. Holt then scored on an error and DeSimone collected an RBI double to plate Cato for the 10-1 lead.
Chris Noble ended the game by run rule with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning for the 11-1 win.
"To be honest, I was just happy to get an opportunity," Noble said of his first career home run. "I was looking for a fastball and took a big hack at the first pitch and worked the count to 1-1, and then he came back with another fastball and I saw it the whole way."
Schulz had three hits with two RBIs and two runs scored while Wurm and DeSimone each had two hits with an RBI.
The Warhawks head on the road for five straight games starting Tuesday in Lafayette against the Ragin' Cajuns. First pitch is at 6 p.m. Links to live video, audio and stats are available on the baseball schedule page at ULMWarhawks.com.
