BOONE, N.C. – For the second game in a row, ULM rallied back to pick up a win at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium, only Sunday's 13-5 series-clinching win over Appalachian State wasn't nearly as dramatic.
A day after rallying from a six-run deficit to claim the lead with a six-run ninth inning, ULM (20-20 overall, 7-11 Sun Belt Conference) trailed 2-0 through two innings before scoring in each of the final five innings in a game that concluded after eight innings due to a travel-related curfew.
Sacrifice flies by Robbie Young and Tyler Leek in the first and second innings, respectively, gave App State (16-23, 7-8) a 2-0 advantage.
After picking up four hits across the second and third innings, ULM finally broke through in the fourth inning.
Travis Washburn hit a leadoff home run to right field, he second homer of the year, to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Grant Schulz and
Landon Cato followed with back-to-back singles.
Colby Deaville hit an RBI single to left to plate Schulz to tie the game, and a sacrifice bunt by
Trace Henry brought home Cato for the 3-2 lead.
The Warhawks added to the lead in the fifth. Humeniuk doubled to leadoff the inning and moved to third on
Danny DeSimone's sacrifice bunt. Washburn brought Humeniuk home with a single to center for the 4-2 advantage.
ULM increased the lead again in the sixth inning. With two outs,
Mason Holt was hit by a pitch and Humeniuk hit a 2-run home run to left, his fourth of the season and second home run of the series, to push the lead to 6-2.
The Warhawks added another run in the seventh as
Logan Wurm's sacrifice fly scored Washburn for the 7-2 lead.
App State worked back in the game with a three-run bottom of the seventh inning as Bailey Welch hit a solo home run and Kendall McGowan hit a 2-RBI single to right to cut the gap to 7-5.
However, ULM put the game away with six runs in the top of the eighth inning. Henry reached on an infield single and Holt and Humeniuk walked to load the bases with no outs. DeSimone's sacrifice fly scored Henry to take the lead back to 8-5. Washburn picked up his fourth hit and third RBI with a single to center to score Holt. Schulz's sacrifice bunt plated Humeniuk for the 10-5 lead. Wurm lined a double to left center field to score Washburn and Schulz to stretch the lead to 12-5. Henry's RBI single brought home Wurm to cap the scoring at 13-5.
Landon Longsworth (2-2) picked up his second win of the week by throwing two scoreless innings with two hits, one walk and one strikeout.
Cole Martin pitched 3 1/3 innings in the start, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
App State starting pitcher Trey Tujetsch (0-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Washburn had four hits, three RBIs and three runs scored to pace ULM offensively, while Henry had three hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Humeniuk, Schulz and Cato had two hits each while Wurm also drove in three runs. Leshock, McGowan and Drumheller had two hits each for App State.
