Warhawks Take Two from UTA on Senior Day

MONROE, La. – The ULM Warhawks used a strong starting pitching performance in game one and an offensive outburst with a key bullpen contribution in game two to sweep a Senior Day doubleheader from Sun Belt Conference West Division leader UT Arlington, 5-1 and 10-8, Saturday at Warhawk Field.

ULM bounced back to win the series after dropping Friday's series opener, 5-1.

"That's the great thing about baseball and series baseball, is you get to flip the page and go at it again the next day," ULM second baseman Travis Washburn said. "Luckily, today, we got two games in. I know Coach Fed feels very comfortable going doubleheaders because a lot of our guys came from junior college and we played doubleheaders every weekend. I think we were pretty comfortable going into today against a good team."

"It's a tough day," ULM head coach Michael Federico said. "I was so proud of our guys for finding a way after getting beat last night by seeing a good arm. We could have easily folded."

Offensively, junior Grant Schulz had a huge day at the plate. He collected seven hits, including his second career four-hit game in the nightcap, while hitting three doubles and a 2-run home run as ULM (22-22 overall, 9-12 Sun Belt Conference) moved back to .500 on the season.

In game one, ULM took the early lead when Mason Holt hit an RBI single to score Trace Henry for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Warhawks struck again in the second inning as Colby Deaville's sacrifice fly brought home Grant Schulz for the 2-0 lead. Schulz crushed a 2-run home run to left field in the third inning to double the lead to 4-0.

The two sides traded runs in the eighth inning, as UTA (23-25, 11-7) picked up a run on a double play with the bases loaded, while ULM's Andrew Beesley hit a pinch-hit RBI single to left to score Schulz.

Cam Barlow (6-4) threw 6 1/3 shutout innings, giving up four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Carson Orton threw the final two innings to earn his fifth save.

"Everything felt good," Barlow said. "I struggled a little bit with my command, but those guys can really swing it. Luckily, I got a few pitches that they didn't really barrel up. We played really well defensively, as well."

"He just battled and grinded through some things," Federico said. "He got some soft contact with some stuff. You have to win when you're not your best. It's easy when you're your best. He gave our team a chance. I can't say enough about what he did for us to give us that quality start and shorten up our bullpen and gave us a chance to win the series."

Schulz had three hits with a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Holt had two hits, including a double, RBI and run scored. Connor Aube had two hits to lead UTA, including a double.

In the second game, ULM jumped out to another quick lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Mason Holt hit an RBI double to bring home Henry while Travis Washburn scored off an error on the play for the 2-0 lead. Schulz hit an RBI single later in the inning to score Holt for the 3-0 advantage.

UTA's Josh Minjarez hit a 2-run home run to highlight a three-run second inning to tie the game. The Mavericks surged in front in the third inning, using back-to-back home runs by Aube and Andrew Miller to take a 6-3 lead.

ULM responded in the third inning as Michael Cervantes hit a 2-RBI double down the right field line and Colby Deaville reached on a throwing error with two outs to allow Cervantes to score to tie the game at three.

The Warhawks claimed the lead for good in the fourth inning when Ryan Humeniuk's sacrifice bunt brought home Holt. Washburn added to the lead with an RBI single with two outs in the fifth inning for the 8-6 lead. ULM capped its scoring with a two-run sixth inning as Ryan Cupit and Deaville hit RBI singles for a 10-6 lead. UTA committed five errors in the loss.

UTA's Minjarez hit his second homer of the game, a solo shot in the eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, UTA scored another run and put runners on the corners with two outs before Orton entered for the second time on the day to record the final out and his sixth save of the season.

Reid Goleman (2-1) picked up the win, throwing a career-high four innings in relief, allowing a run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

"I wasn't expecting that," Federico said. "I was hoping he would give us six to nine outs. I was thinking about taking him out, and then he had the quick inning. We had the bullpen ready. I'm super proud of Reid. He's such a quiet demeanor. He goes about his business. He didn't have his best stuff either, but it's that time of year."

Schulz had four hits in the second game, including two doubles. Henry and Washburn had two hits each.

"I was proud of the way we played defense today," Federico said. "Grant Schulz had some big two-out hits. We stole some bases, advanced some runners. We just did a lot of the little things."

ULM is off until 6:30 p.m. Friday when they open a series at TCU. Links to live video, audio and stats are available on the baseball schedule page at ULMWarhawks.com.
