ULM Football Conducts First Preseason Scrimmage

Football
MONROE, La. – Under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s, ULM associate head coach Rich Rodriguez sent the team through nearly a 100-play "situational" scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 14 as the Warhawks completed their seventh preseason practice.

"I really liked what I saw from the defense," Rodriguez said. "We had a lot of guys flying around the football and making plays. They even caused a few turnovers. Of course, on the flip side, we put the ball on the ground too many times on offense.

"The effort was pretty good on both sides of the football, and it got hot (heat index of 99) toward the end of the scrimmage. Some guys got a little tired late, but I really liked the enthusiasm that we saw."

Heading into Saturday's first preseason scrimmage, Rodriguez was looking forward to seeing how the players would respond without having coaches providing on-the-field instruction.

"Overall, the retention was pretty good," he said. "Offensively, we did okay from an execution standpoint. Defensively, we didn't seem to have guys out of place. We'll evaluate those things more closely after watching the film.

"Sometimes, I have to remind myself that essentially everyone on the roster is a freshman here in terms of having a knowledge and understanding of our schemes … really in all three phases of the game. So, we have to be a little patient with that when reviewing the first scrimmage, but our expectations are going to be a lot higher for the next scrimmage."

The coaching staff entered the scrimmage with the intent of getting reps for every player on the preseason roster.

"We tried to rep everybody and that's hard to do when you've got so many guys on the preseason roster," Rodriguez said. "We got nearly 100 plays in during the hour and 40-minute scrimmage and most if not all of the guys took reps. That's something we plan to continue to do as we head into this next week as well."

Fall classes on the ULM campus begin on Monday, Aug. 16.

"They are student-athletes, so they're going to have to balance both responsibilities," Rodriguez said. "We've stressed time management throughout this first week, so they should feel pretty good about moving forward. We've also put together a pretty good schedule that sets them up for success while balancing their academic workload with their athletic endeavors. I'm sure they're pretty excited to get the fall semester started.

"I'm sure they're also excited to get camp out of the way. It was quick. I don't know that I've ever experienced a preseason football camp that lasted only one week. But we've definitely gotten better over these first seven practices. Considering we only had one week of camp, we got a lot of work done. We still have three more weeks to get ready for the season opener, but we also understand we've still got a lot of work to do."

ULM opens the Terry Bowden era as head coach with a road game at Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET. The season opener will be televised by SEC Network.
