Warhawks Look to Continue Hot Start vs. MVSU

MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team aims to build on the first 5-0 start in program history and seeks its first-ever six-match winning streak when the Warhawks face Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Stadium.
 
The match was originally scheduled for Aug. 22 in Itta Bena, Mississippi, but was postponed and later moved to Monroe.
 
ULM achieved the best start in program history with a 6-1 win at Southern on Sunday. The Warhawks have outscored opponents 17-2 this season and a 13-1 margin over two matches last week.
 
Junior forward Courtney Marten has taken the team lead in goals despite playing in just three matches and 124 minutes. The reigning Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week scored the seventh hat trick in program history on Friday night vs. Alcorn and added another goal on Sunday at Southern. She has scored five goals on just 10 total shots.
 
Second-year freshman Janet Stopka scored three times last week, with one goal vs. Alcorn on Friday and two on Sunday at Southern. Stopka has four goals on the season and has 14 for her career, which already ranks sixth in program history. Her 30 career points are tied for eighth in program history.
 
Senior Theoni Zerva is tied with Stopka for second on the team with four goals. Zerva has added an assist as well. She played in just eight matches last year and has totaled six goals and four assists in just 13 matches at ULM. She scored twice and added an assist against Alcorn on Friday before tallying another goal on Sunday at Southern.
 
Freshman Mara Grutkamp and senior Aysha Bentick are tied for the team lead with three assists each. Grutkamp added her first career goal on Sunday at Southern. Bentick had her first assist of the season on Friday vs. Alcorn and added two more on Sunday at Southern.
 
Junior goalkeeper Hailey Hillock has won all four of her starts in net this season. She has a 0.51 goals against average over 352 minutes, making 15 saves.
 
ULM leads the all-time series with Mississippi Valley State, 6-2. The Warhawks have won five straight in the series, including a 4-0 win in the last meeting on Aug. 21, 2016. MVSU last won in the series, 1-0, on Sept. 21, 2007, in Monroe.
 
MVSU has played just twice this season, losing a match at Mercer, 10-0, on Sept. 3 and a match at Georgia State, 4-0, on Sept. 5.
