FIRST-AND-10 –
• The ULM Warhawks remain at the friendly confines of Malone Stadium to open Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday when they meet the Troy Trojans. ULM snapped a 12-game losing streak with Saturday's 12-7 win over Jackson State, while Troy went on the road to defeat Southern Miss, 21-9.

• Saturday's game marks the 19th meeting between ULM and Troy. The Trojans lead the all-time series, 10-7-1. In Monroe, ULM leads the series, 5-3-1. The two teams first met on Oct. 31, 1970, with the Warhawks picking up a 14-10 win at Brown Stadium. Since Troy joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2005, ULM leads the series, 6-5. Due to conference scheduling quirks and last year's cancellation due to COVID-19 protocols, Saturday's game marks the first meeting between the two teams since Sept. 22, 2018, (Troy, 35-27) and just the second meeting since 2015.

• ULM enters its 21st season of Sun Belt competition with a 6-14 record (.300) in league openers.
The Warhawks are 4-6 in their last 10 conference openers. Saturday's game marks the third time ULM has opened SBC play against Troy, with the Trojans winning both contests, 24-7 on Sept. 29, 2007, in Troy, Alabama, and 35-27 on Sept. 22, 2018, in Monroe.

• ULM's 2021 roster features five players from the state of Alabama: sophomore linebacker Quae Drake (Wadley), senior defensive tackle DeMontae Haigler (Montgomery / Carver HS), sophomore wide receiver Malik Jackson (Opelika / Lufkin, Texas HS), freshman safety Jalen Vinson (Red Bay) and junior linebacker Zack Woodard (Thomasville).

• Fifth-year senior placekicker Calum Sutherland, who accounted for all 12 points in ULM's 12-7 victory over Jackson State Saturday night, has been named Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week as selected by a media panel. His 12 points matched his career high (12 at UCLA in 2019), as the Warhawks won for the first time since Nov. 23, 2019, 45-42 over Coastal Carolina, ending a 12-game losing streak.

A native of Keller, Texas, Sutherland converted 4-of-6 field-goal attempts, hitting from 29, 45, 42 and 49 yards. His 42-yarder early in the fourth quarter gave ULM a 9-7 lead and his career-long 49-yarder with 2:24 left in the game provided the final margin.

With four made field goals, Sutherland tied the ULM single-game record, joining Cole Wilson (vs. UL Lafayette, Dec. 3, 2006), Roger Miller (vs. McNeese State, 1993), Teddy Garcia (vs. Georgia Southern, 1987) and Bubba Toups (vs. Mississippi College, 1980).

In addition, he has been selected as one of the Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week.

• ULM ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference and No. 17 in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in rushing defense, allowing only 78.0 yards per game. The Warhawks have permitted only four runs of 10 or more yards – tied for the fifth lowest total in the FBS.

• Junior inside receiver Boogie Knight leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks tied for 30th in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, averaging 6.0 receptions per game. The 5-foot-10, 191-pound Knight leads the Warhawks in receptions (12), receiving yards (137) and yards after catch (36). Seven of his 12 catches have resulted in a first down (58 percent). • The ULM defense pitched a shutout in the second half against Jackson State while allowing just six first downs and 109 yards total offense and recording two takeaways (fumble and interception). The Warhawks forced the Tigers' offense to go three-and-out on three of six second-half drives.

THE LAST MEETING –
Troy 35, ULM 27 (Sept. 22, 2018 in Monroe, Louisiana): ULM found itself down by four touchdowns to Troy at halftime of its Sun Belt Conference opener.

That doesn't mean the Warhawks were ready to pack it in though.

A furious rally put ULM back in the game before falling 35-27 at Malone Stadium.

ULM outscored Troy 20-0 in the second half and limited the Trojans to four first downs while forcing five punts. It was a second-half turnaround that had the Warhawks (2-2, 0-1) in striking distance in the waning seconds.

ULM tight end Josh Pederson snared a 23-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Evans with 6:18 remaining, capping a seven-play, 65-yard drive. Craig Ford missed the PAT kick, but the Troy lead had shrunk to 35-27.

After Troy missed a 46-yard field-goal attempt with 2:24 remaining, ULM had a final shot at tying the score. The Warhawks drove to the Troy 11 before Marcus Jones picked off Evans in the end zone with 39 seconds left in the game.

Evans ran for 101 yards on 15 carries and completed 29-of-48 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns.

Troy's Kaleb Barker completed 23-of-28 passes for 273 yards and two scores.

At least at the start, things looked bright for the home team. Heavy rains that blanketed the area slacked off and cleared out before kickoff.

ULM's defense enjoyed a promising start to the game too as the Trojans went three-and-out against the Warhawks, who came out swarming with a Rashaad Harding sack.

The offense followed with a 13-play, 73-yard drive that featured a heavy dose of Derrick Gore, who capped the march with a 1-yard touchdown run. Gore had five carries for 22 yards and caught a pass for 4 yards along the way.

Troy fared better in its second offensive opportunity with a swift six-play, 76-yard drive. Barker scrambled 19 yards for a game-tying touchdown and the score evened at 7-7.

The Trojans maintained their quick-tempo approach with a 14-play drive that covered 81 yards in 5:55. Barker scored on a 2-yard run for a 14-7 Troy advantage with 13:51 left in the second quarter.
ULM began to fall behind trading punts for touchdowns.

Troy scored on its third-straight drive even while utilizing a second quarterback. Sawyer Smith's 26-yard touchdown strike to Damion Willis ended a five-play, 55-yard series and the Trojans led 21-7 with 10:23 showing in the first half.

The Trojans made it four unanswered scores on Barker's 4-yard pass to Willis with 2:20 left in the quarter.

After another ULM drive stalled, Troy went 78 yards in six plays for a fifth-consecutive touchdown as Barker hit Sidney Davis with a 22-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds to go.

Troy rolled up 368 yards of total offense in the first half while building its 35-7 lead. ULM gained just 41 yards on 22 plays in the half after the opening drive.

Troy finally punted again on its first series in the third quarter.

ULM's offense broke its long scoring drought as Kayin White bulled in for a 2-yard touchdown run with 5:17 to go in the third quarter. ULM needed 12 plays to cover 81 yards, with Evans making a 32-yard run during the drive that cut the margin to 35-14.

ULM put together another good series by going 78 yards in 11 plays for its third touchdown. Evans found tight end Sloan Spiller for a 4-yard score with 14:22 left in the game. At that point in the second half, ULM had 12 first downs and 224 yards while Troy had managed just two first downs and 33 total yards.

In the final tally, ULM outgained Troy, 490 to 469, and ran 84 offensive plays.

SUTHERLAND NAMED SUN BELT SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK –
Fifth-year senior placekicker Calum Sutherland, who accounted for all 12 points in ULM's 12-7 victory over Jackson State Saturday night, has been named Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week as selected by a media panel.

His teams advanced to the state quarterfinals on three occasions (2006: Class 4A, 2008: Class 5A and 2012: Class 5A). During his tenure, more than 30 of his student-athletes signed scholarship offers with collegiate programs.

Carr gained experience as an assistant coach at four area high schools, including Neville, Ouachita, West Monroe and West Ouachita.

In ULM's 12-7 win over Jackson State, Knight again matched his career best with six catches for 78 yards. In his ULM debut at Kentucky, he had six receptions for 58 yards. Four of his catches produced first downs against the Wildcats, including third-down grabs of 14 and 15 yards from Rhett Rodriquez on ULM's first scoring drive (12 plays for 43 yards).

Knight ranks No. 15 among active NCAA FBS leaders in combined kick (punts and kickoffs) returns with 1,217 career yards. He also has accounted for 2,132 career all-purpose yards.

ULM BOASTS THREE QUARTERBACKS WITH NCAA FBS STARTING EXPERIENCE –
ULM is one of 15 programs to enter the 2021 season with three or more quarterbacks who have started at least one NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision game: sophomore Colby Suits (started the first eight games in 2020), junior Jeremy Hunt (started the last two games of the 2020 season) and junior Rhett Rodriguez (transfer from Arizona started one game in 2018 and the first two games of the 2021 season).

Rodriguez has completed 25-of-46 passes for 207 yards through the first two games of the season. He was 16-for-29 through the air for 150 yards against Jackson State in the home opener.

SHELBY LEADS FBS IN SACKS –
ULM super senior defensive end Ty Shelby continues to be a menace for opposing quarterbacks. The Houston, Texas, native has posted four sacks through two games, with two sacks in each contest. His four sacks lead the Football Bowl Subdivision at 2.0 sacks per game. He leads the Sun Belt Conference in total sacks despite ULM playing one fewer game than the other nine schools in the league.

Shelby also ranks fourth in FBS and second in the Sun Belt at 2.0 tackles for loss per game.

Shelby had two sacks in the home opener against Jackson State, including his first forced fumble of the season. He also picked up one quarterback hurry.

Shelby was named to Scouting Insiders National Defensive Player of the Week after recording five tackles (4 solos, 1 assist), including a career-best two sacks for 11 yards, and recovered a fumble at Kentucky in the 2021 season opener. Shelby finished with a team-high 10 production points.

Shelby ranked third on the team in tackles for loss (6.5 for 14 yards) and sacks (2 for 2 yards) in 2020, setting career highs in both categories. Shelby finished second among ULM defensive linemen and ranked eighth on the team with a career-best 36 tackles (13 solos, 23 assists).

The Preseason All-Sun Belt selection (third team by Pro Football Focus and fourth team by Athlon Sports) heads into his third year as one of ULM's starting defensive ends. Shelby has started 20 of 45 career games and his career totals include 113 total tackles, with 18.5 resulting in losses (69 yards) including 8.5 sacks (38 yards).

HAWLEY ECLIPSES 200-TACKLE CAREER MILESTONE –

The 6-foot-1, 199-pound Hawley has recorded 203 total tackles (115 solos, 88 assists), ranking No. 62 among active NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision players.

In 2020, he finished second on the Warhawks with a career-best 77 tackles (49 solos, 28 assists). He produced 11 tackles each against Appalachian State (4-yard sack) and at Arkansas State (career-high 2 tackles for loss for 4 yards). Hawley registered his second career interception at Liberty and returned it 39 yards.

McCormick averaged 42.1 yards on 10 punts in the 2021 season opener at Kentucky, including one kick inside the Wildcats' 20-yard line. McCormick hit a game-best 49-yarder early in the second quarter.

McCormick transferred to ULM from Ave Maria (Fla.), where he was a three-time All-Sun Division selection and led the NAIA in punting in 2020 at 42.5 yards per punt while placing 11-of-29 punts inside the 20-yard line.

WEBSTER RETURNS AS HEART OF DEFENSE –
Fifth-year senior linebacker Traveion Webster led ULM with seven tackles (two solo, five assists) in the 2021 home opener against Jackson State. Webster had a half tackle for loss in the win as well. DISCIPLINE MATTERS –
Since taking over the ULM program, first-year head coach Terry Bowden has emphasized the importance of playing disciplined football and his team has taken the message to heart. BOWDEN: WINNINGEST FAMILY IN NCAA DIVISION I FOOTBALL HISTORY –
The late Bobby Bowden (377 career victories) and his sons, Terry (176) and Tommy (90), have combined for 643 wins – the most by any family in NCAA Division I football history. Bobby and Terry became the first father-son combo to serve as head coaches at the NCAA Division I level at the same time while Bobby and Tommy became the first father-son combo ever to coach against each other as head coaches. In a feat likely never to be duplicated, all three Bowden coaches went undefeated and were named National Coach of the Year in the same decade (1990s: Terry, Auburn, 1993; and Tommy, Tulane, 1998; Bobby, Florida State, 1999).

STEPFRET WILLIAMS NAMED HONORARY CAPTAIN FOR SUN BELT OPENER –
Stepfret Williams, who ranks as the only player in ULM history to record multiple 1,000-yard receiving seasons, has been selected to serve as honorary captain for Saturday's Sun Belt Conference opener against Troy.

Williams posted three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons from 1993-95. The Minden, Louisiana, native still holds six ULM career, single-season and single-game receiving records. As a senior in 1995, Williams set single-games records with 264 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions at Nevada.

He closed out his career with 170 receptions for 3,257 yards and 35 TD catches. Williams, who produced 16 career 100-yard receiving games, was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft (No. 94 overall). He spent three years in the pros, including two in Dallas and one season in Cincinnati.

TEAMMATES HONOR KIRBY ARCENEAUX WITH PLAQUE TO COMMEMORATE FIRST TD SCORED IN MALONE STADIUM –
Prior to ULM's home opener, a plaque was dedicated in the southeast corner of the end zone to commemorate the first touchdown scored in Malone Stadium during the inaugural 1978 season. Quarterback Kirby Arceneaux scored on a 73-yard run into the south end zone as then-Northeast Louisiana posted a 21-13 victory over Arkansas State on September 16, 1978.

Arceneaux went on to lead NLU to a 6-4-1 record that season, including shutout victories over Northwestern State and Louisiana Tech. It marked the school's first winning season as an NCAA Division I program.

The permanent plaque was dedicated by his teammates.
