COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Eunice Ilunga Mbuyi won the triple jump in her first meet as a ULM Warhawk, while
Brianna Sam took the crown in the weight throw as the ULM women's track and field team placed six in the Top 3 and the men placed four in the Top 3 in the season-opening Ted Nelson Invitational Friday at Gilliam Indoor Stadium.
Ilunga Mbuyi, a freshman from Olivet, France, won the triple jump with a leap of 41-0 1/4.
Sam, a third-place finisher in the Sun Belt Conference in the weight throw as a junior last season, opened her senior campaign with a sizeable victory. Sam won the weight throw with a toss of 64-11 1/2, more than 10 feet better than teammate
Alivia Busch, who was second at 54-4 1/2.
Also on the women's side, sophomore
Kimone Campbell was second in the 800 meter run in 2:19.63. Senior
Brittney Roberson was third in the 400 in 56.73. The Warhawk women's 4x400 relay was third in 3:56.02.
For the men, freshman
Juwan Blignaut and senior
Jakob Fudge led the way. Blignaut, a native of Brits, North West, South Africa, made his ULM debut with a runner-up finish in the one mile run in 4:17.29. Fudge, a fifth-place finisher in the weight throw at last year's SBC Championships, was second in the weight throw with a heave of 54-2, beating out his teammate, sophomore
Chapman Bazer, who was third with a personal best of 53-5.
Senior
Keith Robinson claimed the other Top 3 finish, completing the 60 meter dash in 6.86 seconds, setting a new personal best.
Among other personal bests,
Darshon Turk was fifth in the men's 60 meter hurdles in 8.07. Sophomore
Eliana Battle was fourth in the women's mile run with a personal best time of 5:17.03. Sophomore
Callan Saldutto finished sixth in the men's weight throw with a toss of 51-11.
