TROY, Ala. – Troy used an 11-0 run spanning the end of the first and start of the second quarters to gain separation and went on to an 89-57 win over ULM Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena.
Second-year freshman
Kyren Whittington led the Warhawks with 17 points to go with four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore
Gara Beth Self added 11 points and redshirt junior
Kierra Brimzy broke into double figures for the first time this season with 11 points. Sharonica Hartsfield and Tina Stephens led five Trojans in double figures with 13 points each. Stephens added 10 rebounds for a double-double.
The Warhawks struggled from the floor for the second consecutive game, shooting 30.3% (20-of-66) and 3-of-10 from the 3-point line. Troy shot 41.7% (30-of-72), made 11 3-pointers and outrebounded ULM 61-36.
After
Gara Beth Self connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game at 3, Troy went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 11-3. ULM answered, going on 10-2 run to tie the game up at 13 on a layup by
Gracen Williams. The Trojans finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run and led 20-13 after one.
Troy continued to build its lead in the second quarter. The Trojans scored the first four points of the frame to extend the run to 11-0 and go up 24-13. ULM cut the gap to nine, 28-19, on a three-point play by
Kyren Whittington with 4:54 left in the half. However, ULM was held without a field goal for the rest of the half as the Trojans extended the lead to 20 at the break, 42-22.
The Trojans used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to push the lead over 30, going up by as much as 36 before leading 69-34 after three quarters.
ULM made a push in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 25 at 74-49 on a jumper by Self. However, Troy was able to pull back away for the 89-57 win.
The Warhawks visit Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. CST Thursday.
