2021-22 ULM Basketball Notes: Game 21 vs. Georgia Southern

THE STORYLINE –
This weekend's games, the final two of ULM's four-game homestand, feature two teams the Warhawks have not faced since 2019-20. Both teams swept ULM during that year, but both are under .500 coming into Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Sophomore Nika Metskhvarishvili continues to shine in Sun Belt Conference action, scoring in double figures in seven of the eight games. He has tallied 20 or more points in three games, including a career-best 23 at UT Arlington.

Senior Russell Harrison has 45 treys this season, good for the third-highest total in the Sun Belt (100th NCAA). The senior has connected on at least one 3-pointer in 42 of his 44 career games as a Warhawk.

As part of the Sun Belt Conference COVID-adjusted schedule for the 2020-21 season, ULM and Georgia Southern meet for the first time since February 2020. It will be the first game vs. the Warhawks for Eagle head coach Brian Burg, who was hired in March 2020.

THE STARTING FIVE –
• ULM welcomes Georgia Southern to Fant-Ewing Coliseum Thursday evening for the first time in nearly two years. Three Warhawks combined for 51 of the ULM's 65 points in a tough 67-65 loss to the Eagles at home on Feb. 6, 2020. ULM scored five points in the final 45 seconds, but a final half-court shot rimmed out as time expired. Seven of ULM's losses that season were by a combined 25 points.

• The Warhawks and Eagles are neck-in-neck in terms of scoring offense in Sun Belt Conference-only statistics with ULM at 66.9 ppg. and Georgia Southern at 66.2 ppg. Defensively, Georgia Southern has the edge, allowing 74.0 ppg. while ULM is at 76.2 ppg. The Eagles have scored more than 70 points in only two of their seven league games while ULM had two 80-point games to start SBC play.

• In the last five games, sophomore Nika Metskhvarishvili has been either ULM's leading scorer or leading rebounder, and in four of those contests, he's been both. Metshvarishvili is averaging 16.8 ppg. and 7.6 rpg. in those five games, which includes 3.0 offensive rebounds per game, and has a team-best six steals. He scored a career-best 23 points in the win at UT Arlington.

• Four times this season ULM has followed two losses with a win, with three of the four victories occurring at home in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks topped then-league-leading UTA in overtime on the road, 62-55, to break a two-game skid. In ULM's two SBC wins, its scoring margin is +7.5 (71.0 to 63.5) and the Warhawks have a +14 scoring advantage after halftime in those games.

• After this weekend's home games, the Warhawks become road warriors with five of their next eight away from Fant-Ewing Coliseum. ULM will see Georgia State and Georgia Southern on the road at the end of February to finish out the Sun Belt Conference regular season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS –
.583 — Forward Thomas Howell's steady hand gives him the highest field-goal percentage on the team at .583 (74-for-127). Though he does not meet the minimum requirements for field goals made for conference or NCAA rankings, he would rank second in the Sun Belt and 21st nationally.

1 — Graduate guard Andre Jones needs just one assist to reach a major milestone at 300 career assists. Jones had five assists vs. South Alabama to bring him to 299 to date. His 76 total is currently fifth in the Sun Belt and he has a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio this season, good for 10th in the league.

45 — Senior Russell Harrison, the Warhawks' overall top rebounder at 5.7 rpg. and second on the squad with 6.1 rpg in Sun Belt Conference games, has 45 defensive rebounds in eight league games. That total is the second-highest in the Sun Belt, one rebound behind Coastal Carolina's 6-foot-9 forward Essam Mostafa's 46 and tied with Arkansas State's 6-7 forward Norchad Omier.

71.4 — ULM, ranked 24th nationally by kenpom.com for its 60.6 assist-to-field goal ratio, recorded a 71.4 ratio vs. South Alabama. The highest by the Warhawks this season is 72.7 at Coastal Carolina.

333 — With 333 assists so far this season, the 10th highest total in the nation, the Warhawks are trending toward one of their top assist totals in the Coach Keith Richard era. The total is 10th since 2010-11 with the opportunity to move into seventh place with 23 assists (356) over the next two games.

959 — Senior Russell Harrison is 41 points away from the 1,000-career-point mark with 959 total points, 564 points as a Warhawk, and 395 in his first year at Wayland Baptist. From Lubbock, Texas, Harrison has had 31 double-figure scoring games in his career and seven double-doubles.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE –
According to kenpom.com (as of Jan 25, 2021), ULM's strength of schedule in 2021-22 is 179th with a rating of +0.08. ESPN.com ranks the Warhawks' SOS at No. 168. ULM had a non-conference strength of schedule rating of +2.70 (No. 109), according to kenpom.com.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN SCOUTING REPORT –
Head Coach: Brian Burg (Mount Mercy, 2003)
Record at Georgia Southern/Career Record: 21-22 (second season)/same
Burg's Record vs. ULM: First meeting
Eagles' Top Scorer: Senior G Elijah McCadden (12.4 ppg.)
Eagles' Top Rebounder: Redshirt junior F Andrei Savrasov (5.8 rpg.)

In his second season at Georgia Southern, head coach Brian Burg faces ULM for the first time in his career as the bench boss for the Eagles. Burg, who was an assistant coach for Texas Tech's Final Four season in 2019-20, spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach under Chris Beard at Little Rock. The Trojans won the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title that season and compiled 30 wins, including an NCAA Tournament first-round 85-83 win over 12th-ranked and fifth-seeded Purdue.

Even shooting .565 from the field and matching App State point-for-point in the second half, Georgia Southern could not overcome its halftime deficit and dropped an 80-72 Sun Belt Conference game last Saturday. The Mountaineers shot .519 percent overall and were paced by Adrian Delph's 24 points. Red-shirt junior forward Andrei Savrasov led the Eagles with 16 points and Gedi Juozapaitis finished with 11. Prince Toyambi matched his career high with a game-best 12 rebounds.

ULM and Georgia Southern have both defeated UT Arlington with the Warhawks picking up the win on the road and the Eagles taking a 74-73 overtime victory at home in Hanner Fieldhouse on Jan. 8. The Eagles have lost three-straight games since the UTA win, but all three contests since have each been decided by less than eight points.

Georgia Southern has utilized nine different starting lineups this season, with 10 players playing over 12 minutes a game, but no Eagle is averaging more than 30 minutes a contest. Eight Eagles are averaging six points or more with their leading scorer, senior guard Elijah McCadden, playing 30 minutes off the bench in the loss to the Mountaineers last Saturday.

Two of the Eagles' Thursday night games in 2022 have been canceled (vs. Texas State Jan. 6 and at Troy Jan. 13). So, Georgia Southern takes on its first full road swing and is looking for its first Sun Belt Conference road win this season. Since 2014-15, when Georgia Southern joined the conference, the Eagles have the fourth-most league wins with 78.

ULM/GEORGIA SOUTHERN SERIES NOTES –

The Warhawks have a 7-3 series record in games played in Monroe, Louisiana. The Eagles have won seven of the last nine meetings and 10 of the last 14 games overall. Six of the last 10 games in the series have been decided by eight points or less.

THE LAST TIME OUT –
South Alabama 68, ULM 56 (Jan. 22, 2022, in Monroe, La.): ULM saw one get away Saturday with a second-half swoon as South Alabama captured a 68-56 Sun Belt Conference win at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks allowed a two-point halftime lead to evaporate as the Jaguars outscored ULM, 35-21, over the final 20 minutes.

A pair of imports from the Southeastern Conference led the way for USA as Texas A&M transfer Jay Jay Chandler scored 21 and LSU transfer Charles Manning Jr. added 20.

The Jaguars utilized big advantages in several key statistical categories to put ULM away. South Alabama came up with 14 steals and outscored ULM, 27-7, on points off turnovers. The Jaguars also outscored ULM on fast-break points (17-0) and points in the paint (34-18).

Nika Metskhvarishvili scored 13 points with seven rebounds while Andre Jones scored 13 with five rebounds and five assists but also committed eight of ULM's 18 turnovers.

After spotting USA an 11-3 lead to start the game, ULM rode an 11-0 run to go ahead 14-11 on Thomas Howell's jumper. The Warhawks kept up the surge and built their largest first-half lead to 25-14 as the run extended to 22-3.

USA would regroup and tied the score at 31-31 on a 3-pointer by Chandler with 1:49 left in the first half. The Jaguars made 6-of-7 shots from the field during their rally.

Metskhvarishvili hit a rainbow 3-pointer at the buzzer to send ULM into the break leading 35-33.  He and Jones scored nine points each to lead the Warhawks in the first half. ULM outrebounded USA, 18-9, in the half while outscoring the Jaguars, 9-2, in second-chance points.

The game featured four lead changes and five ties before USA took control.

Early the second half, USA frustrated ULM with its tight, half-court zone and began to pull away with a 15-2 run that gave the Jags a 52-43 lead at the 11:25 mark. The Warhawks would not recover.

QUOTING KEITH RICHARD –
Georgia Southern scouting report
"Georgia Southern has played a lot of good basketball thus far this season, but the wins simply haven't followed. This team plays extremely hard, and most of its games have gone down to the wire.

"Offensively, Georgia Southern has struggled to shoot the 3, but this is a very good mid-range shooting team combined with the ability to finish inside. Defensively, it plays a switching man-to-man that features some very good perimeter defenders, and they're comfortable mixing in some zone as well.

"From a personnel standpoint, Andrei Saratov is a really solid interior player while guards Elijah McFadden and Kamari Brown put a lot of pressure on the defense with their attacking style of play."

On how struggles against the zone contributed to loss to South Alabama
"We struggled against their 2-3 zone and we struggled with turnovers out of it. I'm looking down at the stat sheet and there's 27 points off turnovers. The majority of those were against the zone. They're a really fast team and they explode in transition. Those turnovers are undefended points. That was the story of the game.

"We struggled on getting inside that defense. They're real long and our passing wasn't good against it, trying to get it in there against them. That turned the game. When we didn't turn it over, we actually got some good shots. We've got to do better against the zone."

COACHES vs. CANCER PROGRAM –
At Thursday night's Sun Belt Conference game against Georgia Southern, ULM head coach Keith Richard and his coaching staff are wearing specially designed Coaches vs. Cancer polos along with their favorite sneakers on the sidelines to raise awareness about the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.
