Playing in back-to-back games, fatigue became a factor in the second half as neither team scored for nearly the first four minutes. Trailing 42-34 with 14:33 left, Keyon Wesley scored five-straight points to key an 11-0 run for the Red Wolves. Antwon Jackson made the second of two free-throw attempts to give A-State its first lead of the game at 43-42 with 10:14 on the clock. Series in Jonesboro
Arkansas State 74, ULM 72 (Jan. 15, 2021 in Jonesboro, Ark.): Caleb Fields and Malcolm Farrington combined for 34 points to lead Arkansas State to a 74-72 win over ULM in the opening game of a Sun Belt Conference weekend series in First National Bank Arena.

The start of the game was delayed 20 minutes as the arena crew worked to straighten an uneven rim at the basket nearest the ULM bench. The inauspicious beginning only served as a precursor for a heartbreaking finish for the Warhawks.

ULM appeared to tie the score at 74-all in the closing seconds of regulation; first on a goaltending call, then perhaps on a tip-in with 0.1 seconds left. During the trip to the replay monitor following the final horn, the officials never reviewed the tip-in because the whistle blew on the initial goaltending call. However, what went unexplained was why .6 seconds weren't added back to the clock and why ULM wasn't awarded an in-bound opportunity.

The tightly contested game featured 10 lead changes and six ties, with neither team managing to build a double-digit margin.

A-State jumped out to a 12-6 lead on a layup by Tim Holland Jr. with 16:13 remaining in the first half. ULM responded with a 10-2 run to take a 16-14 lead on Josh Nicholas' jumper from the left elbow with 12:51 to play in the opening half. The Warhawks got a left-handed scoop shot from Marco Morency and a 15-foot pull-up jumper from Koreem Ozier as ULM built its largest lead at 27-22 with 6:51 left. Trailing 34-30, A-State closed the first half with a 10-2 spurt and Avery Felt's 3-pointer from the left baseline sent the Red Wolves into the intermission with a 40-36 advantage.

Both offenses executed at a high level in the first 20 minutes. Arkansas State made 14-of-24 field-goal attempts (58 percent), including 8-of-13 3s (62 percent), while ULM shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor. Caleb Fields netted 12 first-half points for the Red Wolves, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field including 2-for-2 from 3-point range. The Warhawks got 12 points each from Ozier and Chris Efretuei.

There were four lead changes in the first 3 1/2 minutes in the second half. Russell Harrison, who went scoreless in the first 20 minutes, scored ULM's first six points in the second half, and the Warhawks regained the lead at 44-43 on Ozier's layup with 17:17 on the clock. A-State took the lead for good a 45-44 on a pair of free throws from Fields with 16:25 remaining.

The Red Wolves took a five-point advantage at 66-61 on Caleb London's rebound goal with 4:04 to play. Harrison converted two free throws as ULM cut its deficit to 68-66 with 2:56 left. With 40 seconds left, A-State matched its biggest lead at 74-68 on Norchad Omier's jumper in the lane with the shot clock winding down. Elijah Gonzales hit 2-of-3 free-throw attempts and Ozier added two more points from the charity stripe as the Warhawks rallied to within 74-72 with 12 seconds remaining. Fields misfired on the front end of a one-and-one with :07 to go; Harrison collected the rebound and drove the length of the floor for a potential game-tying layup at the buzzer. He missed the lay-up attempt, but Morency's appeared to send the game into overtime with a tip-in with 0.1 seconds on the clock.

A-State, which managed to hit only 10-of-37 3-pointers in the two-game series in Monroe, Louisiana, connected on 11-of-24 3s. ULM went 3-of-19 from behind the 3-point arc, with its first trey falling at the 10:39 mark of the second half.

Fields paced the Red Wolves with 19 points, hitting 5-of-8 shots for the field, including 2-of-3 3s, and 7-of-11 free throws. A-State also got 15 points from Malcolm Farrington, who made 5-of-11 3-pointers, and 10 points from London.

Ozier led ULM with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-4 3s, to go along with four steals. The Sacred Heart University transfer has scored in double figures in six consecutive games, averaging 15.7 points during that stretch.

Harrison finished with 18 points and eight rebounds while Efretuei contributed a season-high 14 points, connecting on 6-of-11 field-goal attempts.

A-State (5-6, 2-2 Sun Belt) jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first four minutes, but the Warhawks answered with a 21-4 run and built a 23-18 lead on Koreem Ozier's transition basket with 8:42 left in the first half. The five-point lead marked ULM's largest in the game, as the Red Wolves rallied to take a 39-36 advantage into the halftime intermission.

A layup by Elijah Gonzales gave ULM a 49-48 lead with 16:18 remaining in the game, but A-State responded with a 13-2 spurt and opened up a 10-point advantage at 61-51 on a jumper by Caleb Fields with 12:46 on the clock. The Warhawks managed to cut their deficit to six points three times in the second half – the last time at 75-69 as Russell Harrison connected on a 3-pointer with 6:18 to play. A-State closed out the game with an 18-3 run for the final 93-72 margin.

The Red Wolves hit 30-of-57 field-goal attempts (53 percent), including 6-of-14 3-pointers (43 percent), while ULM went 23-of-60 (38 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-20 (40 percent) from 3-point range.  A-State outrebounded the Warhawks, 44-34, and outscored ULM, 40-26, from inside the paint.

Harrison scored a career-high 28 points with 12 rebounds to lead the Warhawks to an 80-72 win over Little Rock at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The double-double was the sixth of Harrison's career. Harrison reached the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season and sixth time in his career. He was 11-for-16 from the field and 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

The Warhawks improved to 6-0 at home this season and have an eight-game winning streak at Fant-Ewing Coliseum, dating back to last season.

Little Rock native Andre Jones, who began his collegiate career with the Trojans, added 16 points and nine assists for the Warhawks. As a team, ULM finished with 20 assists and shot 57 percent from the field. Koreem Ozier scored 12 points with five rebounds and five assists.

The first half featured a series of runs by both teams, resulting in 10 lead changes and one tie over the first 20 minutes.

ULM opened the game with a 9-0 blitz, but Little Rock rode a 9-0 run to claim its first lead at the 12:11 mark. The Trojans stacked a 13-2 run after that and extended their advantage to 25-18.

QUOTING KEITH RICHARD –

Arkansas State scouting report:
"This is perhaps Mike Balado's most-talented team. This is very experienced team with lots of continuity. Arkansas State's top returnees include Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year candidate Norchad Omier along with steady scorer and playmaker Marquis Eaton. Desi Sills, a transfer from Arkansas, has had an immediate impact in the starting lineup. This team can score in bunches from the perimeter and it's awfully good at scoring in transition."

On 30-minute effort vs. Little Rock:
"The team's energy was very good, despite how warm it was in the arena. We continue to improve defensively. That's three games in a row that I've been pleased with our defensive effort. We're still trying to improve on offense, but our shot selection and execution were better tonight.

"That stretch – the last 15 minutes of the first half and the first 15 minutes of the second half – was the story of the game. It wasn't a full 40-minute effort, but for 30 minutes, we defended and rebounded well, which got us out in transition and led to some easy buckets. We scored 29 points off turnovers and those too came from our effort on the defensive end of the floor. Our guys were very active, which led to some steals as well as some fast-break points."

On Russell Harrison's performance in Little Rock win:
"We really needed someone, and I'm glad it was him, to carry us in stretches of that game. I really thought he did."

On playing in the Sun Belt Conference:
"Conference games are tough. That was like pulling teeth out there tonight (against Little Rock). But that's how they all are and are going to be in this conference."

On closing out a game:
"I thought we got to messing around a little it. We thought the game was over and we didn't have the same defensive intensity that we had to get the 14-point lead. I thought we relaxed on that end, and next thing you know, they're right back in it. Hopefully, that's a learning lesson for us.

"To get better, we've got to take a 14-point lead and stretch it to 20. That's when you know you've got a really good team when they can do that kind of stuff."
