Â
THE LAST MEETING –
ULM 41, South Alabama 31 (Oct. 23, 2021 in Monroe, Louisiana): Suddenly, ULM is armed and dangerous.
Â
Freshman quarterback Chandler Rogers celebrated his 20th birthday by passing for a career-high 368 yards and four touchdowns to lead ULM to a 41-31 Homecoming win over South Alabama at Malone Stadium.
Â
A week after stunning Liberty on the same field, ULM kept the momentum going while improving to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Â
Making his fourth ULM start, Rogers set career highs across the box score passing as he completed 25-of-35 passes without a turnover or a sack.
Â
Will Derrick made five catches for 135 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter that gave ULM the lead for good.
Â
Overall, ULM gained 555 yards on 73 plays, with running back Andrew Henry contributing 88 rushing yards and a score on 18 attempts.
The defense did its part again with two interceptions, one fumble recovery and four sacks. Zack Woodard collected 13 tackles and ULM forced three punts, all in the second half.
Â
ULM's opening drive was an impressive seven-play, 75-yard march finished off on Henry's 20-yard touchdown run. Henry gained 31 yards on three carries and Boogie Knight hauled in a 19-yard pass from Rogers during the series.
Â
South Alabama's first offensive series ended with a ULM takeaway as cornerback Mark Williams raked loose a fumble after a catch by Jalen Tolbert and recovered at the Jaguars' 44.
Â
But ULM would give the ball right back as Derrick fumbled at the USA 12 after a catch deep in enemy territory. Keith Gallmon Jr. recovered and returned the turnover to the Jaguars' 38.
Â
On the series after the turnover, USA faced fourth-and-3 from the ULM 10 when Jake Bentley rolled out under heavy pressure and tossed a touchdown pass to Jalen Wayne in the back of the end zone. The eight-play, 62-yard drive tied the game at 7-7 with 4:18 left in the first quarter.
Â
Safety Keilos Swinney intercepted Bentley and set up ULM's offense at the USA 49 with 14:18 left in the second quarter. The Warhawks needed six plays to reach the end zone as Rogers hit Jared Sparks for a 12-yard touchdown.
Â
South Alabama settled for a 28-yard field goal with 9:13 left in the second quarter after driving 55 yards on seven plays to pull within 14-10. ULM's Sir'Darrius Ellis sacked Bentley on third down to force Diego Guarjardo's field-goal attempt.
Â
The Warhawks recouped the three points on their next possession as Calum Sutherland's 39-yard field goal extended ULM's lead to 17-10 with 5:23 to go before halftime. ULM's 10-play drive gained 53 yards.
Â
South Alabama tied the game at 17-17 with 1:24 remaining before halftime as Bentley found tight end Luke Sefcik on a 12-yard touchdown connection. The Jaguars moved 65 yards on nine plays for the score.
Â
ULM's offense responded again to finish the half on a positive note as Rogers directed a masterful 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Rogers completed six passes for 69 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Knight to give ULM a 24-17 lead with four seconds remaining. The touchdown was the first of Knight's ULM career.
Â
The Warhawks gained 295 yards of total offense in the half while collecting 17 first downs. Henry rushed for 54 first-half yards, Rogers completed 16-of-23 attempts for 191 yards and two scores and Knight had six catches for 75 yards. ULM's defense made two takeaways.
Â
South Alabama opened the third quarter with a 10-play, 75-yard march to tie the game at 24-24. Bentley's third touchdown of the game was an 8-yard strike to Tolbert with 10:17 to go in the quarter.
Â
After ULM turned the ball over on downs at USA 34, the Jaguars unleashed their big-play offense to take their first lead at 31-24. Bentley's fourth touchdown pass was a 40-yard rainbow to Tolbert to cap a quick four-play, 66-yard drive with 6:28.
Â
Malik Jackson's 38-yard run to the USA 37 started ULM's next offensive opportunity off on the right foot. Receiver Fred Lloyd leaped high to score his first ULM touchdown on a 21-yard pass from Rogers to pull even again at 31-31 after a six-play, 75-yard drive.
Â
ULM's defense forced a three-and-out and the offense pounced two plays later with an 81-yard touchdown pass from Rogers to Derrick, who caught the ball in stride and raced for his first career score. ULM led 38-31 with 1:07 remaining in the third.
Â
South Alabama didn't punt until the third quarter, but ULM's defense produced three-straight three-and-outs to help maintain control into the final period.
Â
Sutherland's 40-yard field goal with 6:28 left in the game extended the lead to 41-31. ULM covered 51 yards in 10 plays while chewing 5:32 off the clock.
Â
Needing two scores, USA opted for a 39-yard field-goal attempt by Guajardo with 1:22 remaining but the kicker was wide left.
Â
An interception by ULM's Nick Roberts with 18 seconds sealed the win for ULM, which improved to 4-1 at home.
Â
THE LAST MEETING IN MOBILE –
South Alabama 38, ULM 14 (Oct. 24, 2020, in Mobile, Alabama): ULM lacked a finishing touch on Saturday night.
Â
The Warhawks came up empty too many times in the red zone and surrendered too many pivotal plays in a 38-14 loss to South Alabama at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
Â
The Warhawks fell to 0-6, 0-3 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Jaguars improved to 3-2, 2-0.
Â
ULM quarterback Colby Suits completed 22-of-33 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown but also had an interception returned for a touchdown. With 92 rushing yards, ULM was unable to top 100 yards for the sixth time in the 2020 season.
Â
Defensively, the Warhawks registered four sacks and seven tackles for loss but saw South Alabama receiver Kawaan Baker catch six balls for 154 yards and three touchdowns. The Jaguars were 8-of-14 on third down and 3-for-3 on fourth-down conversions.
Â
Coming off an open date, ULM's early results looked good before South Alabama flipped the script.
Following a three-and-out by the defense, ULM's promising opening drive ended abruptly with a pick six that put South Alabama ahead 7-0. On second-and-10 from the USA 14, Suits' pass to Jevin Frett deflected to Devin Rockette, who returned the interception 95 yards for a touchdown.
Â
The Jaguars led 10-0 after Diego Guajardo's 50-yard field goal capped a 10-play, 50-yard drive, with 3:01 left in the first quarter.
Â
South Alabama struck again with 51 seconds left in the first quarter as Trotter connected with Baker on an 80-yard touchdown pass to go up 17-0.
Â
South Alabama's two-quarterback system misfired when ULM linebacker Hunter Smith intercepted Chance Lovertich at the Warhawk 10 with 7:29 remaining before halftime.
Â
ULM parlayed the turnover into points with an eight-play, 85-yard drive, finished as Josh Johnson bulled into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown run. ULM trailed 17-6 after Davis Hughes missed the PAT, a score that stood until halftime.
Â
With the first series of the second half, ULM delivered an impressive drive that ended in more frustration. The Warhawks covered 64 yards in 10 plays, stayed alive by converting on fourth-and-1 with a sliding catch by Jonathan Hodoh at the USA 7, yet ultimately came up empty when Hughes pushed a 29-yard field-goal attempt wide right.
Â
South Alabama retaliated with another scoring march, covering 80 yards on 10 plays to extend the lead to 24-6. Baker contributed a 32-yard catch and Trotter scored on a 5-yard run for the Jaguars with 4:25 to play in the third.
Â
After ULM turned the ball over on downs at midfield, the Jaguars constructed a five-play, 49-yard drive. Trotter found Baker for a 16-yard touchdown pass and South Alabama led 31-6 with 13 seconds remaining in the third.
Â
Jordan Carroll caught his first career touchdown pass with 12:26 remaining in the fourth quarter and Frett added the two-point conversion catch from Suits as ULM cut the deficit to 31-14. Suits was 5-for-5 for 72 yards on the drive, including the TD toss to his former North Forney (Texas) High School teammate.
Â
South Alabama played keep-away down the stretch with a 16-play, 71-yard drive that chewed 10:47 off the clock. Trotter fired his third touchdown pass to Baker on fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line with 1:30 left in the game. Trotter was 8-of-12 passing for 184 yards.
Â
EASTWOOD THOMAS NAMED HONORARY CAPTAIN –
Eastwood Thomas, who closed out his ULM career by starting 42-straight games on the offensive line (right and left tackle), has been selected as honorary captain for Saturday's Sun Belt Conference game at South Alabama.
Â
As a fifth-year season in 2019, the 6-foot-5 Thomas earned All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention after establishing himself as a mainstay on an offensive line that helped produce ULM's first 1,000-yard rusher in 10 seasons, in Josh Johnson, who ranked in the league and No. 15 in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in rushing, averaging 108.2 yards per game. He graded out 90 percent or higher in six games and totaled a season-best four knockdowns against No. 23 Memphis. As a team, the Warhawks recorded eight 200-yard rushing games in 2019.
Â
A native of Jackson, Alabama, Thomas became a four-year letterman under head coach Matt Viator and earned 46 career starts from 2016-19.
Â
THE LAST TIME OUT –
Coastal Carolina 28, ULM 21 (Oct. 8, 2022, in Monroe, La.): A Homecoming win over Coastal Carolina was there for the taking Saturday night, but ULM couldn't close the deal.
Â
ULM (2-4, 1-2 Sun Belt) shut out Coastal's high-powered offense in the second half. Quarterback Chandler Rogers was nearly perfect. However, the Warhawks squandered several crucial red-zone opportunities down the stretch and dropped a 28-21 decision to the Chanticleers.
Â
Rogers completed 27-of-30 attempts for 279 yards and two touchdowns and set a school record with 19 consecutive completions to open the game. His 200-yard outing was the second of the season and sixth of his career.
Â
After surrendering 28 points to the visitors in the first half, ULM's defense clamped down and didn't allow another score. The Chanticleers (6-0, 3-0 Sun Belt) punted five times in the second half with three three-and-outs. Zack Woodard led ULM defenders with 10 tackles, one sack and two tackles for losses.
Â
The Warhawks came into the game a perfect 11-for-11 in red zone opportunities but came up empty in three of five trips against Coastal.
Â
The two teams traded touchdowns like kids swap baseball cards in the early going
Â
With the game's opening drive, Coastal collected 75 yards in nine plays and took a 7-0 lead on CJ Beasley's 9-yard touchdown run.
Â
ULM countered with its own 75-yard scoring march over six plays. Malik Jackson's 1-yard touchdown run with 8:18 left in the first quarter tied the score at 7.
Â
Beasley's second touchdown capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive and gave Coastal a 14-7 lead with 4:08 remaining in the first. The Chants were 4-for-4 on third-down conversions, and gained seven first downs and 165 yards on their first two offensive series.
Â
Tight end Zach Rasmussen hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Rogers at the end of an 11-play, 75-yard march and the game was tied 14-14.
Â
Coastal answered in rapid fashion as Grayson McCall connected with Jared Brown on a 56-yard touchdown pass with 12:25 left in the half. It took Coastal two plays to go 78 yards in 40 seconds to go up 21-14.
Â
Driving into scoring position again, ULM blinked first in the shootout as Rogers fumbled and CCU recovered at the Chants' 15. However, ULM's defense held for a three-and-out and forced the game's first punt with 6:33 to go before halftime.
Â
After ULM downed its first punt at the Coastal 4 with 4:10 left in the half, the Chanticleers took the ball 96 yards to take a 28-14 lead with 25 seconds to go. Max Balthazar's 2-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play march.
Â
Coastal gained 323 yards with 16 first downs in the first half while ULM gained 205 yards with 13 first downs. McCall was 14-for-19 passing for 190 yards and one score.
Â
The Warhawks needed a productive first drive to start the second half and they got it, thanks to a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch by Tyrone Howell. The 6-foot-2 receiver reached out with his left hand as he neared the end zone and pulled in a 42-yard scoring pass from Rogers to finish a five-play, 75-yard drive and cut the deficit to 28-21.
Â
Several missed opportunities ensued for the Warhawks after pulling within a score.
Â
After the touchdown, the ULM defense did its part by forcing another three-and-out, yet the Warhawks couldn't take full advantage. ULM drove to the CCU 1 but Rogers threw his first incomplete pass on fourth-and-1 and the Warhawks turned the ball over on downs with 4:36 left in the third quarter.
Â
Again, ULM's defense held firm and forced Coastal's third punt with 34 seconds to go in the period. ULM outgained the Chanticleers, 160-41, in the third quarter and trailed by a touchdown headed into the fourth.
Â
In another tough break for the Warhawks, Malik Jackson fumbled after picking up a first down on a 5-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter and Coastal recovered at the ULM 29.
Â
However, ULM forced a third-straight punt after the turnover and provided the offense another chance to tie the game. Once again, the Warhawks were stymied and punted after gaining 21 yards on six plays.
Â
ULM's defense remained rugged, forcing another three-and-out and a fourth consecutive punt against the dangerous Chanticleers, who ran six plays and lost 32 yards on back-to-back series.
Â
A 15-yard interference penalty on Tyrone Howell's attempted punt return put ULM in scoring position at the CCU 31, but the Warhawks turned the ball over on downs again as Rogers fired incomplete on fourth-and 2 from the Coastal 13.
Â
ULM's last offensive series began with 28 seconds left in the contest at the Coastal 30 but time finally ran out on the Warhawks as they crossed midfield.
