ULM Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Appalachian State

Volleyball
MONROE, La. – ULM volleyball middle blocker Madeline Williams tied her career best with 19 kills in Friday's match against Sun Belt Conference rival Appalachian State, but the Mountaineers took the 3-2 win (25-12, 24-26, 25-19, 22-25, 15-8). Williams had the match-high total and Tessa Gerwig added 13 for the Warhawks. Alyssa McBean had a match-best 23 digs for the Mountaineers.

App State took an early lead in set one and cruised to a 25-12 victory with point runs of seven and six points to stem any chance of a Warhawk comeback. The Mountaineers hit .325 as a team with only one attack error. In set two, ULM ran off five-straight points to take an 11-9 lead before the back-and-forth battle produced 10 ties in total. App State moved to a 22-19 advantage, but the Warhawks surged back with a points off Mountaineer miscues and a four-point run to close the win at 26-24. ULM hit .302 for the set, best of the night.

Set three put App State back in the driver's seat, despite ASU hitting only .143. The Warhawks tied the set five times, but errors helped the Mountaineers string together a seven-point run and then a six-point stretch to put it out of reach. ULM's eight-point run early helped the Warhawks tie the match at two sets each. Gerwig had six of her 13 kills in set four, including three kills in a critical run early en route to a 25-22 Warhawk win.

The Mountaineers took an early five-point lead and held onto that cushion as they took the final set 15-8. Williams was the Warhawks' primary offensive weapon as she tied her career best for the third time this year by racking up her 19th kill in the final set.

The longest homestand of the season for ULM finishes up with Saturday's noon match vs. the Mountaineers. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
