Troy Holds Off ULM Volleyball in Second Sun Belt Meeting Saturday

TROY, Ala. – ULM volleyball battled in all three sets vs. Troy at Trojan Arena Saturday afternoon, but the Trojans ultimately extended their win streak to seven matches with a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-21, 25-18) over the Warhawks. Three Trojans reached double figures in kills as Tori Hester and Julia Brooks tallied 13 kills each, Amiah Butler had 10 and Jaci Mesa collected a match-best 14 digs.

"This weekend, we went head-to-head against a very aggressive serving team who also terminated every ball when given the opportunity," said ULM head volleyball coach Charlie Olson. "Troy pushed us in every aspect of the match on Friday, yet I thought we made some great adjustments to our game plan on Saturday. We had a handful of players step up into roles they typically don't play, which gave us a new energy on the court. Defensively, we stepped up off Saturday and extended a ton of rallies. Leaving Troy, we have a great feeling coming back home to take on the Ragin' Cajuns for Senior Weekend."

Troy hit .330 for the match while the Warhawks had a .181 hitting percentage. Madeline Williams led ULM with 11 kills and Tessa Gerwig and Logan Jeffus each had seven to help pace ULM. Callie Humphrey had a team-best 12 digs overall.

The Trojans built their lead to three or four points early in the first set, then extended it to five and six before the 25-18 final. Troy had three of its seven total service aces in the set to stem any attempt at a Warhawk rally.

The second set saw 10 ties and four lead changes as neither team held a lead greater than two points until ULM spun off three-straight points to break a 15-15 tie for an 18-15 lead. The Warhawks stayed up at 20-18, but Troy surged back to a 20-20 tie after a Hester kill and three kills by Brooks. The Trojans utilized back-to-back service aces for a two-point lead and captured the 25-21 victory with their third service ace in the set for the final score.

Brooks had five of her kills in the third set to keep Troy on top. The Trojans built a five-point lead at 8-3, but the Warhawks clawed back to pull within one at 8-9 with two key kills from Gerwig during the stretch. Gerwig's offensive attack kept ULM within one or two points and Jeffus got the Warhawks within one point at 16-17. Back-to-back kills by Williams kept ULM in the hunt, but Warhawk errors gave Troy the final points it needed for the third-set win at 25-18.

ULM returns home to Fant-Ewing Coliseum for its final two home matches. The Warhawks will celebrate their seniors as they meet the Ragin' Cajuns Friday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. Both matches will be streamed by ESPN+.
