THE LAST MEETING –
No. 16/16 Coastal Carolina 59, ULM 6 (Oct. 2, 2021 in Conway, South Carolina): ULM turned in its worst performance of the season against one of the best teams in the Sun Belt Conference.

It wasn't a winning combination as the Warhawks were overwhelmed in a 59-6 loss to No. 16 Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.

The Chanticleers (5-0, 1-0 in the Sun Belt) rolled up 557 yards of total offense against ULM (2-2, 1-1) while holding the Warhawks to 203 yards. Coastal topped 50 points for the third time this season and the sixth time since 2019.

Making his first ULM start, quarterback Chandler Rogers was unable get the offense moving on the bright teal "Surf Turf." Rogers completed 9-of-17 attempts for 100 yards, was sacked twice and threw an interception, ULM's second turnover of the year.

ULM punted six times while falling behind 38-3 by halftime. The Chanticleers outgained ULM, 351-99, and scored on five of six first-half drives while collecting 16 first downs.

The Chanticleers, who beat ULM for the first time in four games, flexed their muscles from the beginning.

Coastal led 7-0 after scoring on its opening drive. A 25-yard punt return set up a six-play, 55-yard drive as quarterback Grayson McCall found tight end Isaiah Likely for a 5-yard touchdown.

Braydon Bennett's 10-yard touchdown run with 4:46 left in the first quarter extended the home team's lead to 14-0. The Chants covered 63 yards in six plays on their second series.

The opportunistic ULM defense recovered a Coastal fumble at the Chants' 22 with 2:07 to go in the first quarter. McCall fumbled the exchange to his running back and Quae Drake pounced on the loose ball for the recovery.

Four plays later, Calum Sutherland's 40-yard field goal narrowed the gap to 14-3 with 55 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Likely snagged his second touchdown pass from McCall, this one from 30-yards out with 12:50 left  in the second quarter. The Chanticleers covered 81 yards in seven plays to go ahead 21-3.

A blocked punt by CJ Beasley led to an easy touchdown for the home team as Aaron Bedgood scooped and scored from 9 yards out to give Coastal a 28-3 lead with 11:19 left in the first half.

Coastal's first-half dominance continued with Bennett's 29-yard touchdown run with 3:32 remaining before the break. His score concluded a seven play, 86-yard drive and widened the margin to 35-3.

Coastal went to the locker room up 38-3 as Liam Gray tacked on a 45-yard field goal as time expired.

Rogers started the second half and orchestrated ULM's only sustained scoring drive as Sutherland kicked a 30-yard field goal. The Warhawks needed 12 plays to cover 59 yards and cut the score to 38-6.

After going scoreless in the third quarter, Coastal Carolina extended the lead to 45-6 on Beasley's 15-yard touchdown run. With back-up quarterback Bryce Carpenter at the helm, the Chanticleers mounted a 75-yard, 15-play drive.

Rogers' interception with 13:35 to go in the game led to another Coastal score. Two plays after the turnover, third-team quarterback Jarrett Guest tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Chris Rhone for a 52-6 lead. The scores were career firsts for both Guest and Rhone.

Coastal capped its advantage at 59-6 after a nine-play, 75-yard drive ended with Zachary Stevens' 5-yard touchdown pass to Jared Brown.

THE LAST MEETING IN MONROE –
ULM 45, Coastal Carolina 42 (Nov. 23, 2019 in Monroe, Louisiana): Fireworks are fun, but it pays to have a fire extinguisher around too when things get out of hand.

On a night when the offenses ran hot at Malone Stadium, ULM's defense made two key stands late to preserve a 45-42 win over Coastal Carolina.

ULM (5-6, 4-3 Sun Belt) kept alive its chances to reach bowl eligibility with a satisfying finish in their final home game of 2019.

Caleb Evans passed for 346 yards and two touchdowns, including a 98-yard strike to Markis McCray that is the longest in school history. Evans also ran nine times for 69 yards and a touchdown while directing an offense that gained 563 yards.

ULM's offense claimed the lead for good when Evans hit Zach Jackson for a 34-yard touchdown strike that put the home team ahead 45-42 with 6:47 remaining. The Warhawks went 75 yards in three plays, burning just 43 seconds for the game's eighth lead change.

A pivotal defensive stop by ULM, including a third-down sack by Ty Shelby, forced a Chanticleers punt and gave the Warhawks' possession with 5:13 left in the game.

Coastal regained possession as Evans was intercepted by Chandler Kryst at the CCU 24 with 3:26 to go. Again the defense responded as Larance Shaw sacked Fred Payton on first down for a loss of 3. After a false start by the Chanticleers, Payton ran for 5 yards and CCU faced third-and-13. On the next play, Ivin White Jr. recovered a muffed snap by the quarterback at the CCU 15.

With another big night, Evans became the second ULM player to reach 11,000 yards of total offense and moved past Steven Jyles into second place for career passing yards (9,180). He also extended his school record for rushing touchdowns to 35.
McCray had three catches for 114 yards, recording his first 100-yard receiving game in his last home performance. Running back Josh Johnson added to his gaudy numbers with 129 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

Linebacker Cortez Sisco Jr. recorded 19 total tackles and became the first player to go over 100 tackles since Hunter Kissinger's 133 in 2015. Sisco now has 102 stops this season.

CJ Marable led Coastal Carolina (4-7, 1-6) with 172 rushing yards and two scores. The Chanticleers gained 452 yards with 230 on the ground and 222 passing.

The two offenses came out trading blows from the start.

CCU's opening drive covered 75 yards in five plays and ended with Marable's 3-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.

The Warhawks answered quickly with a rapid-fire march of their own. Johnson rambled 12 yards for his 10th touchdown to close out a five-play, 67-yard drive for a 7-7 tie at the 11:11 mark.

ULM needed one explosive play to take its first lead as Evans fired a 98-yard touchdown pass to McCray with 5:55 left in the first quarter. The reception was the longest in ULM history, surpassing Wendal Lowrey's 96-yard pass to future L Club Hall of Famer Vincent Brisby at Stephen F. Austin in 1991.

The Chanticleers steered right back into a 14-14 tie as Payton tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jaivon Heiligh with 57 seconds to go in the first quarter. CCU's drive was 75 yards in nine plays.

ULM regained the lead when Austin Vaughn barreled into the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown, his fourth. The Warhawks went 74 yards in six plays to go ahead 21-14 with 8:52 remaining in the half and that remained the score until halftime.

Sisco posted a monster first half with 17 total tackles and an interception late in the second quarter. His tackle for loss was his first of the year.

The Warhawks added a season-long 37-yard field goal from Jared Porter on their series to open the third quarter and led 24-14. The 12-play drive gained 58 yards.

Coastal converted on a fake punt on fourth-and-3 at the CCU 44 to keep its first third-quarter drive alive and scored three plays later on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Payton to Ky'Jon Tyler. ULM led 24-21 with 7:35 left in the period.

Tyler terrorized ULM again minutes later as he returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown that gave CCU its first lead since the opening quarter at 28-24 with 5:38 remaining.

ULM regained the edge at 31-28 as Evans scored on a 32-yard run with 1:52 to go. The Warhawks needed six plays to go 67 yards and Evans scored his 11th rushing TD of the year.

The fourth quarter brought another lead change when Payton tossed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Reese White to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive. With 12:17 to play, CCU led 35-31.

The Warhawks countered with their own 75-yard drive over 12 plays and regained the lead at 38-35. ULM converted on third down three times, including a determined 14-yard run by Evans on third-and-9 to the CCU 12. One play later, Johnson powered through for a 12-yard touchdown run with 7:44 left in the game.

CCU needed one play to go ahead 42-38 as Marable streaked up the sideline for a 75-yard touchdown with 7:30 to go.

The final touchdown from Evans to Jackson was the answer that ULM needed to take the lead for good and the defense helped seal the deal.

THE LAST TIME OUT –
Arkansas State 45, ULM 28 (Oct. 1, 2022, in Jonesboro, Ark.): Some habits are hard to break.

Arkansas State (2-3, 1-1 Sun Belt) played a mean game of keep away in the first half while building a 10-point halftime lead. ULM had a hard time getting the Red Wolves' offense off the field as the home team gained 355 yards on 77 plays overall.

ULM (2-3, 1-1 Sun Belt) gained 290 yards total, finished just 3-for-12 on third-down conversions and committed 10 penalties for 105 yards.

Alred Luke's first career touchdown tied the score at 7-7 with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter. A wide-open Luke split the seam and hauled in a 58-yard scoring pass from Rogers to cap a five-play, 75-yard drive.

After a three-and-out stop by the defense, Boogie Knight's muffed punt set up Arkansas State at the ULM 28. ULM's defense stiffened again, didn't allow a yard on the series and held the Red Wolves to a 46-yard field goal by Dominic Zvada for a 10-7 lead with 2:12 showing in the first.

The Warhawks took a 14-10 lead with 11:33 left in the second quarter when Rogers flipped a play-action pass to tight end Zach Rasmussen for a 5-yard touchdown. ULM needed just six plays to go 69 yards, with Rogers running for 30 yards on three carries during the march.

Arkansas State reclaimed the advantage at 17-14 on Brian Snead's 13-yard touchdown run, closing out an 11-play, 85 yard drive with 6:31 left before halftime.

The Red Wolves extended their lead to 24-14 by completing a nine-play, 53-yard drive with 43 seconds remaining. Blackman's screen pass to Johnnie Lang went for an 18-yard touchdown and a 10-point edge for the home team going into the break.

Arkansas State held the ball 20:28 to win time of possession in the first half and converted 7-of-13 third-down opportunities. The Red Wolves outgained ULM 199-153 over the first two quarters as Blackman passed for 155 yards and two touchdowns. The Warhawks were flagged six times for 79 penalty yards while Arkansas State made five first-half penalties for 50 yards.

ULM's offense started the second half with a three-and-out, then saw the Red Wolves retaliate with a 10-play, 78-yard scoring drive to boost the deficit to 31-14. Lang punched in a 1-yard touchdown rush with 8:32 left in the third. Arkansas State scored on three consecutive possessions after trailing ULM in the second quarter.

The Warhawks pulled within 31-21 after launching a much-needed 13-play, 65-yard drive. Malik Jackson scored on a 1-yard run with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter.

But Arkansas State's Lang delivered a demoralizing jolt on the ensuing kickoff with a 98-yard return for a touchdown and the Red Wolves led 38-21 with 2:48 showing on the clock.

With 11:22 left in the game, Rogers dashed 22 yards around the right side for a rushing touchdown to close the margin to 38-28. The Warhawks rushed for 55 yards during their nine-play, 67-yard drive to get back on the scoreboard.
