Cold Shooting Dooms ULM in Loss at Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. – JerKaila Jordan scored a season-high 20 points to lead Mississippi State to a 94-39 win over ULM Tuesday night at Humphrey Coliseum. The game was moved up two hours and played without fans in attendance due to the threat for severe weather in Starkville and the Golden Triangle.

Katlyn Manuel's layup brought ULM to within 3-2 at the 7:10 mark in the first quarter; however, the Warhawks failed to score for the remainder of the period, missing 12 consecutive field-goal attempts while committing six turnovers. Mississippi State (6-2) outscored the Warhawks, 18-0, during that stretch while building a commanding 21-2 lead after the first 10 minutes. Kourtney Weber provided an early spark for the Bulldogs, scoring 10 points off the bench on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor including a perfect 2-for-2 from 3-point range.

"Hats off to a good Mississippi State team," ULM head coach Brooks Donald Williams said. "They were extremely tough today. We got down from the tip and just couldn't quite recover.

"We appreciate the Mississippi State staff and administration for taking precautionary measures to keep our group safe today."

ULM (2-4) shot 44 percent (8-of-18) from the field over the next 10 minutes and played MSU almost even in the second quarter (outscored, 20-19). The Warhawks put together a 6-0 run midway through the second quarter to cut its deficit to 28-11 on Manuel's rebound basket with 5:07 left. ULM scored 14 points in the paint, with Emma Merriweather, who managed five points and four rebounds including three off the offensive glass, and Manuel, who added four points, doing most of the damage.

The Bulldogs, who led by as many as 24 points in the second period, led 41-21 at halftime. Jordan (12) and Weber (10) combined to scored 22 of MSU's 41 first-half points.

A 3-pointer from Jordan fueled a 15-0 spurt early in the third quarter as MSU extended its lead to 57-23 on Jessika Carter's layup with 5:46 on the clock. The Bulldogs made 61 percent (14-of-23) of their shots from the floor in the period while limiting ULM to 28 percent (5-of-18) field-goal shooting. MSU outscored the Warhawks, 33-12, in the period to build a 74-33 advantage.

The Bulldogs continued their dominance in the fourth quarter by outscoring ULM, 20-6.

For the game, MSU shot 55 percent (36-of-65) from the field, including 8-of-18 (44 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. ULM finished 17-of-67 from the floor (25 percent), including 0-12 from 3. The Bulldogs held a decided advantage in points off turnovers, 29-9; points in the paint, 46-24; fast-break points, 30-10; and bench scoring, 45-12.

Four other Bulldogs joined Jordan in double-figure scoring. MSU got 14 points each from Weber and Asianae Johnson, 12 from Debreasha Powe and 10 from Carter.

Manuel hit 7-of-14 field-goal attempts and finished with 14 points to pace the Warhawks to go along with seven rebounds.

"I am proud of Kate and the way she battled today," Williams said.

Merriweather contributed seven points and a team-high nine rebounds.

MSU's 94 points are the most allowed by the Warhawks since a 98-70 loss at Arkansas State on Jan. 8, 2022, and ULM's 39 points are its lowest scoring output since a 70-37 setback against Stetson in the Van Chancellor Classic.

ULM returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 3 with a non-conference game against Champion Christian in Fant-Ewing Coliseum, with tipoff set for noon.

"We look forward to getting back to Monroe safely to prepare to take final exams and get ready for Champion Christian on Saturday," Williams said.
