ULM volleyball falls in four sets at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – ULM volleyball rebounded to win the second set, but eventually fell in four sets to Arkansas State Friday night at First National Bank Arena (16-25, 25-23, 17-25, 17-25). The Red Wolves posted a .276 hitting percentage and had 10 total blocks to fuel their win. Macey Putt paced Arkansas State with a match-best 14 kills while Logan Jeffus and Tessa Gerwig had 12 kills each. Warhawk Cameron Rogers had a match-high 19 digs, tying her top total in a Sun Belt match this season.
 
In the first set, ULM stayed close to Arkansas State after taking a 1-0 lead at the start. Nine attack errors in the set hurt the Warhawks, erasing their nine kills. The Red Wolves took the first-set win 25-16 and .270 team hitting percentage.
 
With nearly identical hitting percentages in the second set, the Warhawks fell behind by four points, but illustrated their determination by tying the set at 11-all. Arkansas State pulled ahead by two and kept that edge until ULM scored three-straight points and tied the set again at 19 points. A service ace by Callie Humphrey put the Warhawks up 20-19, but the Red Wolves tied it up at 20.
 
A Red Wolves' error and kill by the Warhawks gave ULM a 22-20 lead, but Arkansas State came from behind to tie the score at 23-all. Back-to-back kills by Jeffus closed out the second set for the Warhawk win 25-23. ULM improved with 14 kills, but committed eight errors for a .140 percentage to .143 for the Red Wolves.
 
Arkansas State hit a blistering .464 with 15 kills in the third set and scored the last five points for the 25-17 win. After four early ties, the Red Wolves kept the Warhawks at bay, closing down any ULM scoring rally. In the fourth set, Arkansas State hit .289 to just .091 for the Warhawks and used two four-point scoring streaks to stay on top throughout the 26-17 win.
 
ULM volleyball completes its trip to Arkansas with a 1 p.m. CT match on Saturday, Nov. 5, which will be streamed on ESPN+. The Warhawks wrap up the regular season Nov. 10 and Nov. 11 at Georgia State.
