ULM Faces Georgia State Saturday; Seeks 2-0 Start in Sun Belt

THE STORYLINE –
With its 81-66 victory over Arkansas State on Thursday, ULM snapped a 10-game losing streak in Sun Belt Conference openers. It also ended a 16-game losing streak in Sun Belt action and a 10-game home-court losing streak in league play. ULM will look to win back-to-back conference games for the first time in four seasons (March 2019) against Georgia State (6-8, 0-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Warhawks will attempt to go 2-0 in Sun Belt play for the first time since 2011-12 and just the fifth time in program history. ULM also has an opportunity to build its first three-game winning streak since early in the 2018-19 season.
 
THE TIPOFF –
• With its 81-66 victory over Arkansas State on Thursday, ULM snapped a 10-game losing streak in Sun Belt Conference openers. It also ended a 16-game losing streak in Sun Belt action and a 10-game home-court losing streak in league play. ULM will look to win back-to-back conference games for the first time in four seasons (March 2019: at Coastal Carolina, 60-57; and vs. Arkansas State, 65-53) against Georgia State (6-8, 0-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Warhawks will attempt to go 2-0 in Sun Belt play for the first time since 2011-12 and for just the fifth time in program history.
 
ULM also has an opportunity to build its first three-game winning streak since posting five-straight non-conference victories early in the 2018-19 season.
 
• Saturday's game is the 15th meeting between ULM and Georgia State. The Panthers lead the all-time series, 12-2, including a 5-2 record in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Georgia State has won seven consecutive games in the series. ULM's last win in the series came on Jan. 14, 2017, 72-63, in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
 
• Red-shirt senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy leads ULM in scoring, averaging 9.8 points per game. The 5-foot-9 Brimzy has scored in double figures eight times this season. She recorded her first career double-double against Champion Christian, finishing with 13 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. Brimzy scored a season-high 18 points in the opener against Louisiana Christian.
 
ULM's playing rotation features three others players who are averaging better than 8.0 points per game, including sophomore forward Katlyn Manuel (9.1 ppg.), sophomore guard Olivia Knight (8.4 ppg.) and graduate center Emma Merriweather (8.2 ppg.). Seven different Warhawks have led the team in scoring this season.
 
• Graduate center Emma Merriweather ranks as ULM's leading rebounder (7.7 rpg.) and fourth-leading scorer (8.2 ppg.). On a minutes-played basis, those statistics are equivalent to 18.2 points, 17.2 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots per game.
 
The 6-foot-5 Merriweather ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference's Top 10 in four different statistical categories: second in field-goal percentage (.574), second in offensive rebounding (3.6 pg.), second in blocked shots (1.7 pg.) and seventh in overall rebounding (7.7pg.). Merriweather has posted two double-doubles this season, scoring a career-high 30 points and collecting a season-high 15 rebounds against Champion Christian and contributing 13 points and 10 boards against Central Arkansas.
 
• As a team, ULM ranks third in the Sun Belt Conference and No. 27 in NCAA Division I in offensive rebounds, averaging 15.3 per game. In addition, the Warhawks are listed among the league leaders in five additional statistical categories: first in blocked shots (4.5 pg.), second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.0), third in assists (14.8 pg.), sixth in turnover margin (+2.8 pg.) and seventh in rebound margin (+1.4 pg.).
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS –
500 – Two ULM players have scored more than 500 career points, including sixth-year senior center Diamond Brooks (594) and fourth-year junior guard Gara Beth Self (576). Sixth-year senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy needs one more point to join the 500-point club while graduate center Emma Merriweather needs 85 more points to reach the milestone.
 
82.8 – True freshman Myca Trail ranks sixth in the Sun Belt Conference in free-throw percentage, hitting 24-of-29 attempts.
 
73.9 – ULM is 5-3 at home this season while averaging 73.9 points per game – that's +7.1 points higher than its season scoring average.
 
36.7 – ULM, which ranks third in the Sun Belt Conference in offensive rebounding at 15.3 per game, has collected 36.7 percent of its rebounds off the offensive glass. Center Emma Merriweather (40 of 85) and forward Katlyn Manuel (33 of 74) rank 1-2 on the team in offensive rebounds.
 
10 – Depth is an obvious strength of ULM's 2022-23 team as 10 different players are averaging at least 12.0 minutes per game.
