2021-22 ULM Basketball Notes: Game 27 vs. Ragin' Cajuns

THE STORYLINE –
The first game of the home-and-home series between ULM and the Ragin' Cajuns is set for Fant-Ewing Coliseum Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT. The Warhawks will celebrate their four seniors Reginald Gee, Justin Gibson, Russell Harrison and Andre Jones in a pre-game ceremony.

With a game-best 20 points against Texas State Saturday, graduate guard Andre Jones registered at least 20 points in his fourth-straight contest and extended his streak of double-figure scoring games to 11. The Little Rock, Arkansas, product is averaging 23.5 points and 3.5 assists per game over the last four games with a .554 field-goal percentage (36-for-65) in 38.3 minutes per outing. He currently ranks seventh in the Sun Belt rankings at 15.0 ppg.

ULM and ULL have split the last six meetings in the series with each team picking up two wins on their respective home courts, and during the 2020-21 season, each team winning on the opponent's floor. The outcomes of nine of the last 16 meetings have been determined by nine points or less.

THE STARTING FIVE –
• For the second-straight season, the Warhawks and the Ragin' Cajuns play their two Sun Belt Conference meetings in back-to-back contests. ULM won the first meeting in 2020-21 at Lafayette, 72-66, on Feb. 11, and fell at home, 88-72, on Feb. 13.

• Competing against the Ragin' Cajuns as Sun Belt Conference foes beginning with the 2006-07 season, the Warhawks have won the first game of the season series six times. Thursday night's game marks the latest date for the first meeting between the two teams. Feb. 10, 2013, was the latest prior to the 2021-22 schedule.

• ULM enters Thursday night's game having won three of its last four games, falling to Sun Belt Conference leader Texas State, while the Ragin' Cajuns have lost three of their last four. Both teams have five SBC victories as the Ragin' Cajuns opened the league slate with three straight, including road wins at App State (71-55) and Coastal Carolina (65-64).

• As the regular season begins its homestretch with only four games remaining, ULM and App State are the only Sun Belt Conference teams to have played the full 14-game league schedule to date.

• ULM finishes out the regular season with three-straight road games, first at the Cajundome Saturday, Feb. 19, and then at Georgia State (Feb. 24) and at Georgia Southern (Feb. 26). The Warhawks have three Sun Belt Conference wins away from home this season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS –

He extended his streak of 20-point games to four last weekend.

Julien scored the Ragin' Cajuns' last seven points to force the overtime period. The Ragin Cajuns' top scorer and rebounder Jordan Brown had his sixth double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 boards, with junior forward Theo Akwuba adding 14 points and nine rebounds. Ragin' Cajuns' bench boss Bob Marlin is in his 12th season in Lafayette and is the all-time leader in Sun Belt Conference victories (124). He guided the Ragin' Cajuns to the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance that season. He was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in both 2014 and 2018 after his Ragin' Cajuns won the 2018 SBC regular-season title. Marlin coached for 12 years at Sam Houston before taking over the Ragin' Cajun program. He launched his coaching career as a graduate assistant (1981-83) at ULM under legendary coach Mike Vining, who now serves as color analyst on the ESPN+ broadcasts originating from the Monroe campus.

Under Marlin, the Ragin' Cajuns historically have scored at a high clip, finishing no lower than fourth in the Sun Belt Conference statistical standings during his tenure. At 70.6 points per game this season, they are currently seventh. Individually, Jordan Brown is tied for seventh with ULM's Andre Jones at 15.0 points per game and Kobe Julien is 18th at 12.1 points per game. On the glass, the Ragin' Cajuns are ranked second behind Coastal Carolina at 39.2 rebounds per game and rebound margin (+5.2). Brown is third in the league and 31st nationally with 8.9 boards per game. Theo Akwuba is fourth in the SBC with an 8.4 average.

The Ragin' Cajuns acquired four transfers over the summer, including Jordan Brown, who played the 2020-21 season at Arizona and was a Top-20 prospect in the 2018 class. Greg Williams Jr., a former three-star prospect and three-year player at St. John's, and Jalen Dalcourt, who transferred from San Jose State following a year at Tallahassee Community College and Iowa Western Community College, also joined the Ragin' Cajuns.

ULM/RAGIN' CAJUNS STATE SERIES NOTES –

In each of the last three seasons ULM and ULL split the regular-season series with the home teams winning on their respective courts during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, but each team claimed victories on the opponent's court during the 2020-21 campaign. Nine of the last 16 meetings have been decided by nine points or less.

Keith Richard is 8-14 against the Ragin' Cajuns as ULM head coach.

It also marked ULM's first win in Lafayette since Jan. 19, 2015, 57-55.

The Warhawks led from start to finish Thursday night while posting their first conference win since Jan. 2 (62-55 over Arkansas State).

ULM (5-15, 3-10 Sun Belt) put together an early 11-0 run and took a 16-3 lead on Harrison's 3-pointer from the left corner, off an offensive rebound from Chris Efretuei, with 11:48 left in the first half. The Ragin' Cajuns went 0-for-8 from the field and committed four turnovers during that stretch of 5:23.

The Warhawks limited the Ragin' Cajuns to 28-percent field-goal shooting (10-of-36) in the first half, including 2-of-10 from 3-point range.

ULM managed to extend its lead to eight points on three separate occasions in the second half. Harrison's 3-pointer from the right wing lifted the Warhawks to a 54-46 advantage with 9:14 left.

The Ragin' Cajuns got a 3 from Jacobi Gordon and a basket from Cedric Russell to cut their deficit to 54-51 with 8:12 on the clock. Louisiana Lafayette scored its next five points from the free-throw line but went without a field goal (0-for-4) for 4:50.

Josh Nicholas buried a pull-up 3 from the left wing in transition to give ULM a 63-56 advantage with 3:35 remaining.

It marked Harrison's second-straight double-double after his 12-point, 10-rebound performance in the series finale at UT Arlington last Saturday. Koreem Ozier hit 6-of-12 field-goal attempts, including 3-of-7 3s, for 15 points. With his 3-pointer from the top of the circle with 10:08 left in the second half, Ozier eclipsed the 1,000-point career milestone. Nika Metskhvarishvili, ULM's fourth-leading scorer at 10.3 points per game, sat out Saturday's game with an illness.

QUOTING KEITH RICHARD –
Ragin' Cajuns' scouting report:
"ULL is one of the best rebounding teams in the league on both ends of the floor (+5.2 rebound margin). It's also one of the best interior defensive teams.

"The Cajuns have a pair of outstanding post players, in Jordan Brown and Theo Akwuba. Brown has led the team in scoring in three of its last four games while averaging 15 points per game on the season. Akwuba, who averages nine points and eight rebounds per game, is one of the league's best rim protectors (29 blocked shots).

"Kobe Julien is Lafayette's top perimeter player, averaging 12 points per game while shooting 35 percent from 3-point range.

"This team has a deep bench, and Coach Marlin doesn't hesitate utilizing a 12-man playing rotation."

On team's late offensive drought vs. Sun Belt leader Texas State:
"They are a good defensive team, and they have been for some time. "You could feel their defensive presence out there. At times, it was a struggle for us to score, regardless of what we tried to run. Give Texas State credit for its man-to-man defense. They don't have very thick players, but they have a lot of length within their playing group. We needed to score better to win that thing.

"We had a prolonged scoring drought somewhere there in the second half, and when you play a team like Texas State that prefers a low-possession type of game, an eight-point lead feels like a 12- or 14-point lead for them. You simply can't afford a scoring drought like that against Texas State. Again, give them credit because they're a good defensive team. You have to play well offensively against Texas State to have a chance to beat them.

On team's defensive efforts to hold Texas State below its scoring average:
"I sure felt like we played well enough defensively to give us a chance to win. We held Texas State eight points under its season scoring average, but the name of the game is to put the ball in the hole. We didn't do it consistently enough this afternoon."

On playing without key contributors:
"It certainly helps when you have a full roster available. At least, you feel like you have all the bullets in your gun, so to speak."

On how his team responds after tough losses:
"The one thing this team has done all year is respond after extreme disappointment. They've been resilient. They've come back the next week ready to work. With the last home game coming up, they'll step up into the ring and start swinging again. I know they'll do that."
