ULM Softball Travels to Golden Eagle Invitational for Five Weekend Games

Softball
MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (6-0) takes to the road for the first time in 2022 as the Warhawks travel to the Golden Eagle Invitational in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for five games over three days, Friday, Feb. 17 through Sunday, Feb. 20.

ULM begins the tournament weekend with a single game against Houston Baptist on Friday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. CT and then faces Jacksonville State in two games Saturday, Feb. 19, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and the second game set for 7 p.m.  Sunday's games feature an 11 a.m. start against Mississippi Valley State and final game against Southern Miss, the host institution, at 2 p.m.

"Our goal is the same as it always been – win – and continue to do what we are doing and avoid complacency at all costs," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "The competition is going to get more and more difficult, and this weekend will give us a good gauge to see where we are."

The Warhawks are off to their best season since 2006 when they started 10-0 and recorded their second no-hitter of the season Wednesday, the most in a season in the four-year Fichtner era of ULM softball. The efforts by the pitching corps combined with the offensive output and field play make for a strong foundation for the young Warhawks. ULM scored 55 runs off 59 hits in its six wins so far, with individuals contributing in all areas of the game. Kennedy Page homered and drove in three runs in Wednesday night's 12-0 run-rule win over Jackson State while Gianni Hulett earned her second win as she and Victoria Abrams and Kinsley Kackley combined for the team's second no-hitter.

Five different pitchers recorded wins during the opening weekend's Best of the Bayou Classic as the Warhawks outscored their opposition, 43-7, over five games. Fichtner has been proud of how her team has played, and how her Warhawks have responded when facing challenges.

Houston Baptist, returning eight starters from a year ago, heads into the weekend with a 2-2 record after opening the season at the Bearkat Classic. The Huskies came from behind with sophomore Caitlyn Brockway's three-run blast for a 3-2 win over Texas Southern Tuesday. The Warhawks hold a 6-0 series advantage and most recently topped the Huskies 10-4 as part of the 2020 Mardi Gras Mambo in Youngsville, Louisiana.

Freshman Ab Garcia has a team-best five hits for the Huskies with a .385 batting average, and in the circle, sophomore Lyndie Swanson is 2-1 with victories in the season opener against Dayton and in a relief role against Texas Southern Tuesday.

Jacksonville State went 3-2 as part of the ULM's Best on the Bayou Classic last weekend although the Gamecocks and Warhawks did not face each other during the event. JSU's veteran roster includes 14 upperclassmen, with junior Brantly Bonds leading the Gamecocks with a .588 batting average with 10 hits, including three home runs. Jacksonville State is ranked fifth nationally with 10 home runs in its five games. Three pitchers have made appearances in the circle for JSU with Kat Carter and Lexi Androlevich posting 1-1 records and Sarah Currie at 1-0 after Sunday's six-inning win over Mississippi Valley State.

ULM defeated Mississippi Valley State 13-1 (6 inn.) in its season opener last weekend and will face the Devilettes for the second time in Sunday's early game. Mississippi Valley State came out of the Best on the Bayou Classic with a 0-5 record. Sydney Wesley tops the Devilettes offensive chart with a .429 batting average with two multi-base hits in her three total. Daisy Page has done the most work in the circle for the Devilettes with 8.2 innings pitched and a 5.85 ERA.

Southern Miss is 4-3 so far in 2022, taking both games of a Wednesday doubleheader in Baton Rouge against Southern University. The Golden Eagles played host to the Black & Gold Invitational last weekend and registered wins against Saint Louis and North Alabama to open the season. Junior Hannah Borden (BA .381) and Tata Davis (BA .333) are two of four Golden Eagles who have played in all seven games so far, each with eight hits on the year. Davis hit homers in her first two games and has nine RBI already.
