ULM Softball Improves to 7-0 with Comeback Win in Golden Eagle Invitational

Warhawks’ Two-out Rally Plates Seven Runs in Key Fifth Inning

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Madelyn Fletcher drove in two of the Warhawks' seven runs in the top of the fifth inning as the ULM softball team improved to 7-0 with an 11-7 comeback win over Houston Baptist Friday afternoon. Victoria Abrams pitched five innings in relief for her second win of the season at the Golden Eagle Invitational as she kept the Huskies scoreless in the final three frames.

"We spoke right before the fifth inning and said 'hey, we're working base to base, we're not trying to go up there and hit a home run. We got to work base to base – whatever it takes to get on base and then we're going to be smart,'" said ULM head coach Molly Fichtner.

The Warhawks, down 7-4 in the top of the fifth, launched their rally with two outs as the Huskies walked three-straight ULM batters, hit another by a pitch, then walked two more to allow three runs to score for a tie game at 7-all.

With the bases loaded, Gabby Davila had an infield single to score two more Warhawk runs and then Fletcher, the 10th batter in the inning, singled to plate two more runs for ULM. The Warhawks took the 11-7 lead with seven runs in the inning on three hits.

"We have this saying, called 'pass the bat' and you just pass the bat to the next person," Fichtner said. "Whatever you have to do to get on base, we need runners. They did a really good job passing the bat, especially with two outs. When you're able to do that, especially when you're down, you know it's going to take multiple pitches, it is going to take us going deep in the count, drawing walks, fouling off pitches and making them throw a lot."

Davila finished her afternoon with three hits while Fletcher had two hits and drove in three runs. ULM drew 11 total walks for the game and each team had three only three strikeouts.

Houston Baptist took an early 2-0 lead as the Huskies scored as the result of a ULM error. The Huskies responded to a ULM run in the top of the second when a lead-off walk moved to second on a stolen base and came home on a single to left center.

ULM charged back at the top of the third with Korie Kreps taking first on a four-pitch walk before Davila moved her to second with her second single. Fletcher's single brought Kreps in and Andie Edwards tied the game as her single allowed Davila to score. A Huskie error scored Fletcher for a 4-3 ULM advantage after the Warhawk portion of the third.

The Huskies responded again, getting their lead-off batter on base with a well-hit single to center field before the Warhawks would bring Abrams in to replace Gianni Hulett. A combination of hits, fielder's choice plays and an error would give Houston Baptist four runs on four hits for a 7-4 lead after three full innings.

"I do think that when Victoria (Abrams) started settling in, that's when you saw kind of the tables turn as far as our defense and everything was kind of firing on all cylinders," Fichtner said. "The first few innings were a little rough for us, but we're going to learn from it. We're going to take it and keep going, and keep going and get better each game. If we can find a weakness inside of a game that we've won, then that's a double win for us, because that gives us an opportunity to get better."

ULM plays two games against Jacksonville State on Saturday, Feb. 19, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m. CT and the second game to follow at approximately 7 p.m. The Warhawks conclude the three-day Golden Eagle Invitational with two games Sunday against Mississippi Valley State (11 a.m.) and Southern Miss (2 p.m.).
