ULM Softball Splits Sunday Games in Golden Eagle Invitational

Warhawks Win Morning Game 8-3 and Fall to Tournament Host Southern Miss 8-1 in Final

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The ULM softball team (9-2) split its games on the final day of the Golden Eagle Invitational, defeating Mississippi Valley State 8-3 in the morning and falling to Southern Miss 8-1 in the final game of the weekend.

The offensive firepower the Warhawks displayed with 12 hits in game one did not carry over to game two despite the efforts of Gabby Davila and Kennedy Johnson. Davila had five hits in the two games, including a triple, and 10 over the five-game weekend. Johnson tallied three hits with a double in the final game. Korie Kreps had three hits Sunday and scored three runs.

"We had multiple opportunities to shut the door in game two and get some runs across and unfortunately we didn't take advantage of it like we should have," said ULM head coach Molly Fichtner. "It caught up to us and Southern Miss had two very big innings where they scored four runs -- which is uncharacteristic of our pitching staff. We missed opportunities and you can't really win a lot of ball games if you don't score. We had a lot of hits, but we didn't have the clutch hits to get the RBIs across."

ULM returns to competition for a Tuesday, Feb. 22 game at Grambling. First pitch is at 2 p.m. The Warhawks then travel to Auburn for the three-day Auburn Invitational Friday, Feb. 25-Sunday, Feb. 27.

Southern Miss 8, ULM 1
Southern Miss scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning and added to its lead with four runs in the sixth en route to an 8-1 win over ULM in game two.

Korie Kreps had two hits and scored the Warhawks' run after getting on base with a lead-off single in the fifth. A passed ball moved her to second and she went to third on Lourdes Bacon's single. Kreps crossed home plate when Bacon was tied up in a rundown after an attempt to steal second.

The Warhawks threatened again in the top of the sixth when a Johnson double landed Davila on third after she reached first on a full-count single. A strikeout and fly-out left two Warhawks on base to end the inning.

Southern Miss added four runs in the bottom of the sixth with two singles, an error and a walk loading the bases with just one out. A single by Alyssa Davis plated two runs and she took second on another Warhawk throwing error. Back-to-back fielder's choice plays scored two more runs to extend the Southern Miss lead to 8-1.

Golden Eagle pitcher Morgan Leinstock (4-1) scattered six hits in her seven innings of work, allowing one earned run while striking out six Warhawks. Warhawk Kinsey Kackley gave up two runs for the loss. Victoria Abrams and Gianni Hulett came on in relief with Abrams facing 18 batters in four innings and Hulett pitching the final inning.

ULM 8, Mississippi Valley State 3
Davila (4-for-4) and Johnson (3-for-4) each drove in four runs as the ULM topped Mississippi Valley State 8-3 in Sunday's first game. Lourdes Bacon went 3-for-3 on the day and her lead-off walk started the scoring for the Warhawks.

Davila drove two of her four runs with a triple to bring in the Warhawks' first run in the opening inning as Bacon came around to score. Johnson's single just over the reach of the shortstop plated Davila to give ULM a 2-0 lead, their first of the weekend.

ULM responded to Mississippi Valley State's second-inning run with two scores in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles by Bacon and Kreps and a passed ball to advance the runners set the table for Davila's two-RBI single. The Devilettes cut into the deficit with a run in the bottom of the inning as leadoff batter Brianna Alston singled and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Alston took third on a wild pitch and came across home on a two-out single for a 4-2 ULM lead.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth. Bacon singled to lead off and then stole second. She advanced to third on Korie Kreps' sacrifice bunt and scored on Davila's first-pitch single up the middle. The Devilettes got their run after a lead-off single by Jade Smith who moved to second on a passed ball. Hulett came in for relief of Giddens and allowed a single and a Mississippi Valley State run for a 5-3 score at the end of five innings.

In the top of the seventh, the Warhawks added three insurance runs. With two outs, Johnson smacked a bases-loaded double near the wall in left-center. Her hit cleared the bases, with Kreps and Davila, from third and second, respectively, and Jacelyn Buck coming home after reaching base on a walk.

Kassidy Giddens threw four innings for her second win of 2022 and Gianni Hulett picked up her first save with three innings in relief. The Devilettes' Daisy Page was tagged with the loss.

The Warhawks were the away team for the entire five-game invitational and played four games in approximately 25 hours.

"It was a quick turnover and that's what we discussed, was how quick the turnaround was going to be and understanding that we had to come out focused," Fichtner said. "You are going to be a little exhausted when you do something like that. Kennedy and Gabby sparked our offense and did a really great job in that first game. We gutted it out. I still don't think we've played as great as we could have played, but there's a ton to improve on. The season is just getting started.

"This was a pretty tough schedule for us this all weekend and when you are away every single time and you have the two late games and two early games," Fichtner commented. "We had to learn how to get through and if we can get through that, we'll be much better off in the future."
