MONROE, La. – Missouri scored three runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 4-3 win over ULM in the first game of the weekend series Friday night at Warhawk Field.
ULM (1-3), which dropped to 0-6 all-time against Missouri, built a 3-1 lead, but one play gave the Tigers (5-1) the lead for good.
ULM led 3-1 in the top of the seventh and Missouri had no runners on base and two outs. A single by Josh Day kept the inning alive, and Trevor Austin and Luke Mann followed with back-to-back bases on balls. Tre Morris hit an infield single behind the second base bag to score Day. Travis Washburn threw wildly to third on the play, trying to throw out Austin, but the throw got away to the Mizzou dugout, allowing Austin to score. After ULM senior third baseman
Grant Schulz retrieved the ball, he threw home to try and retire Austin, but the throw went toward the ULM duguout, allowing Austin and Mann to score to turn the 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead for Missouri.
The Warhawks put two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth inning as sophomores
Michelle Artzberger and
Landon Cato drew walks, but they were stranded on base.
Mizzou's Austin Cheeley pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his first save.
The teams traded runs in the first inning, as Tre Morris hit a two-out RBI single to left, bringing home Day for the 1-0 lead. ULM answered in the bottom half when Artzberger connected on an RBI single to center to score Schulz to knot the game at 1.
ULM claimed the lead in the fourth inning when senior outfielder
Mason Holt singled and advanced to third on Artzberger's single to center. Junior
Austin Beech hit an RBI groundout to first base to plate Holt for the 2-1 lead.
The Warhawks doubled the lead in the sixth. Holt tripled to left with one out and scored on a passed ball with two outs.
Three Missouri pitchers combined to throw 19 strikeouts on the night. Starter Spencer Miles threw 5 1/3 innings and took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits while posting a career-high 11 strikeouts with one walk. Tony Neubeck (1-1) picked up the win. He fired 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, allowing no runs or hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
ULM sophomore
Cam Barlow took a no-decision in the start, throwing 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Senior
Lucas Wepf (1-1) suffered the loss, giving up three runs, one earned, on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Holt and Artzberger had two hits each for ULM, while Morris was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for Mizzou.
The Warhawks and Tigers continue the series at 3 p.m. Saturday at Warhawk Field.
