2021-22 ULM Basketball Notes: Game 30 vs. Georgia Southern

THE STORYLINE –
ULM finishes its regular season with Friday's 6 p.m. CT contest at Georgia Southern. The Warhawks and Eagles meet in Hanner Fieldhouse for the first time in more than two years after ULM's 2020-21 COVID-adjusted schedule did not include the matchup.

In Sun Belt Conference games, ULM is the only program with three players among the league's Top 15 in scoring: graduate guard Andre Jones (5th/17.2 ppg.), senior forward Russell Harrison (11th/13.4 ppg.) and sophomore forward Nika Metkshvarishvili (14th/12.4 ppg.). ULM is one of four programs with multiple players in the SBC's Top 15 in scoring in all games: Jones (6th/15.6 ppg.) and Harrison (14th/12.9 ppg).

Georgia Southern broke the tie in the series in the first meeting this season to take a 13-12 lead. The Eagles have a four-game win streak in the series and have claimed victories in eight of the last 10 meetings. The 25 games in the series are the most for ULM against a team in a non-contiguous state.

THE STARTING FIVE –
• ULM plays its final regular-season road game in Statesboro, Georgia, where they have not visited in more than two years. The Eagles won the season's first meeting, 50-45, in Monroe. The two teams last met in Hanner Fieldhouse on Jan. 9, 2020, and the Warhawks' last win on the road against the Eagles was during the 2018-19 season, 66-64, when ULM won both games of its Georgia swing in overtime.

• Of the 17 Sun Belt Conference games to date, 12 ULM contests have been decided by nine points or less. The total point differential in the Warhawks' seven February games (3-4) was 20 points.

• In the Warhawks' seven February games, graduate guard Andre Jones averaged 22.0 points per game with six-straight 20-point scoring games from Feb. 3 through Feb. 19. From Little Rock, Ark., he tallied his career-best with 30 points in front of his hometown crowd in the second game of the six-game streak.

• Junior guard Elijah Gonzales, who averages 4.4 assists per game for fourth in the Sun Belt Conference, is just four assists shy of reaching the 300-assist career milestone. He has 110 assists this season and 209 assists in his two-year career as a Warhawk.

• ULM currently stands in 10th place in the 2021-22 Sun Belt Conference standings with its 5-12 mark in league games. ULM and App State are the only two teams to have played a full 17-game schedule to date. The tournament begins March 3 at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Fla.

Georgia State put together a 9-3 spurt and opened up a six-point advantage at 34-28 on Roberts' 3-pointer from the left baseline with 3:23 remaining. ULM outscored the Panthers, 7-2, over the final 2:59 to cut its deficit to 36-35 at the intermission.

The Panthers reeled off seven-straight points to build a 10-point lead at 57-47 on Allen's fast-break layup off another Warhawk turnover with 12:10 remaining in the game. ULM pulled to within 57-50 on Ozier's trey with 12:02 to play, but the Warhawks failed to close the gap any further. Georgia State led by as many as 16 points over the final 8:33.
