2021-22 ULM Basketball Notes: Game 25 vs. UTA

THE STORYLINE –

ULM returns home for a three-game homestand and welcomes UT Arlington Thursday and Texas State Saturday afternoon. The Warhawks split their January trip to Texas, falling at San Marcos and winning in overtime in Arlington.

Graduate guard Andre Jones was selected the Sun Belt Player of the Week and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week after helping the Warhawks to a two-game SBC road sweep last weekend. Jones, from Little Rock, Ark., averaged 25.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists with a career-best 30 in the overtime victory over Little Rock. He became the first Warhawk to score at least 30 points in a single game since Michael Ertel netted 30 against Georgia Southern on Feb. 6, 2020.

ULM's overtime victory at UTA ended a seven-game losing streak in the series and gave the Warhawks their first win in Arlington since Feb. 20, 2016. UTA has won 10 of the last 12 meetings. The Warhawks last swept UTA in a series in 2015-16 and won a third game in the SBC Tournament.

THE STARTING FIVE –
• ULM heads into its three-game homestand with a two-game winning streak in Sun Belt Conference play. Back to playing a normal league schedule this season, the Warhawks are seeking their first two-game conference sweep (home-away) since defeating Troy twice during the 2019-20 season.

• With a record of 12-12, ULM has its best mark overall since February of 2019 when the Warhawks went 4-3 that month and 4-2 in postseason play to finish the season at 19-16.

• The Warhawks are now 3-1 this season in games decided by five points or less, with all three wins coming on the road: W, 80-77 at Lamar; W, 60-59 at A-State and W, 75-72 OT at Little Rock.

• Junior guard Koreem Ozier contributed in big ways to the Warhawks' two Sun Belt Conference road wins, averaging 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game. His 16 points at Little Rock was his second-highest total in league play this year, just behind his 19 at Appalachian State. Over the two games, Ozier connected on 10-of-21 field-goal attempts (48 percent) from the floor, including 5-of-6 3s (83 percent).

• After this weekend's home games against Texas foes UTA and Texas State, the Warhawks face the Ragin' Cajuns in a home-and-home series Thursday, Feb. 17 (Monroe) and Saturday, Feb. 19 (Lafayette). ULM finishes the regular season on the road at Georgia State (Feb. 23) and at Georgia Southern (Feb. 25).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS –
1.96 — Junior guard Elijah Gonzales is 17th among the NCAA's active career leaders with a 1.96 steals-per-game average. Gonzales recorded a game-high four steals in the overtime win at Little Rock. He has 37 steals in 2021-22, currently second in the Sun Belt Conference.

5 — ULM has won two Sun Belt Conference games in a row, its most since winning five straight in February of the 2017-18 campaign.

9 — Graduate guard Andre Jones has scored in double figures in nine-straight games, averaging 16.4 points during the stretch while hitting 61-of-126 of his field-goal attempts (48 percent) including 10-of-22 3-pointers (46 percent). Jones missed the road trip to Texas State and UTA due to COVID protocols.

12 — With three weeks remaining in the 2021-22 regular season, ULM and App State are the only Sun Belt Conference teams to have played the full 12-game league schedule to date.

45 — Senior Russell Harrison, who is tied for third in the Sun Belt Conference this season with 50 treys, has connected on at least one 3-pointer in 45 of his 48 career games as a Warhawk. Harrison, who reached the 1000-career-point mark Saturday, amassed 420 of those career points from 140 career triples.

51 —  Andre Jones scored 51 points over the Warhawks' two-game road sweep last weekend, tying his season best with 21 at Arkansas State in the first game and then tallying a career-best 30 in the overtime win at Little Rock Saturday. Jones is only the second player in the Sun Belt Conference this season with a 30-point effort in a league game.

78 — The 78 previous meetings with UT Arlington mark the most matchups with a single opponent in ULM history with ULM-Northwestern State at 75 and ULM-McNeese at 70. The Warhawks have 52 wins vs. both UTA and Northwestern State, the top totals against any opponent in program history.

2018 — February 2018 was the last time ULM won two overtime games in the same season as the Warhawks topped Georgia Southern (66-64 OT) and Georgia State (90-82 OT) that month. The Warhawks also won two overtime games during the 2016-17 season with one game in non-conference action and one game in the SBC Tournament.

JONES NAMES SUN BELT AND LSWA PLAYER OF THE WEEK –
Andre Jones, who averaged 25.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists while leading the Warhawks to a Sun Belt Conference road sweep over Arkansas State and Little Rock, was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. Jones made 59 percent of his field-goal attempts (20-of-34), including 57 percent of his 3-pointers (4-of-7), and 88 percent (7-of-8) of his free-throw attempts during the two-game stretch.

In the 60-59 victory at Arkansas State, Jones made 10-of-17 shots from the field, including 1-of-2 3s, and finished with 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals as ULM stormed back from a 14-point second-half deficit. With the victory, the Warhawks snapped a four-game losing streak in Sun Belt Conference play while winning for just the second time in 18 games at First National Bank Arena.

The 6-foot-1, 191-pound Jones scored a career-high 30 points in ULM's 75-72 overtime victory over Little Rock Saturday afternoon. His two free throws with 7.9 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime tied at 64-all. A Little Rock, Arkansas, native and former Trojan, Jones connected on 10-of-17 field-goal attempts, including 3-of-5 3-pointers, and 7-of-8 free throws. He scored 17 of his 30 points after the intermission and collected four assists.

Jones became the first Warhawk to score at least 30 points in a single game since Michael Ertel netted 30 against Georgia Southern on Feb. 6, 2020.

Jones was recently selected Louisiana Sports Writers Association Men's College Basketball Player of the Week by a statewide panel of sports information directors and media members for his performances in last week's sweep against A-State and Little Rock.

UT ARLINGTON SCOUTING REPORT –
Head Coach: Greg Young (Howard Payne, 1986)
Record at UTA/Career Record: 9-13 (first season)/same
Young's Record vs. ULM: 0-1
Mavericks' Top Scorer: Graduate G David Azore (19.2 ppg.)
Mavericks' Top Rebounder: Red-shirt sophomore F Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu (5.9 rpg.)

App State, the defending Sun Belt Tournament champion, outscored UT Arlington, 50-27, in the second half of Saturday's game to claim a 70-61 victory. It was the Mountaineers' first-ever win in Arlington after the Mavericks had built a 34-20 halftime lead. David Azore registered his fourth 30-point performance of the conference season with 36 points. UTA committed 16 crucial turnovers, which were converted into 19 points by App State as the Mountaineers finished with a +14 edge in points off turnovers.

All six of UTA's Sun Belt losses have been by nine points or less, including three setbacks in overtime, and two of those were decided by a total of three points. UTA's average conference loss is by only 4.8 points per game. The Mavs have already set a single-season program record with five overtime games in 2021-22 (1-4), including four conference contests (1-3) – also the most in a single year in program history.

In 2021-22, UTA has defeated each of the Top-3 teams in the preseason poll in Georgia State (1st), the Ragin' Cajuns (2nd) and Texas State (3rd). UTA ranks 2nd in the Sun Belt by averaging 71.1 points per game (South Alabama 1st at 71.2).

Graduate G David Azore tops the Sun Belt Conference lists for both overall scoring (19.2 ppg.) and league scoring (25.2 ppg.). Azore tied for the 10th-most points in single-game program history at Little Rock Jan. 22 with a career-high 37. In that same game at Little Rock, Carson Bischoff tied a single-game program record with nine made 3-pointers, reaching double-figure points for the first time in his UTA career with 27. The nine 3s are the most by a Sun Belt player in any game this year and tied for the seventh most in the country this season.

Grad transfer Javon Levi eclipsed the 700-career assist milestone at Texas State and now has 712, just one of four active players in the country with 700+ career assists. Levi recorded just the third triple-double in program history with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in an 83-73 win over the Ragin' Cajuns Jan. 13.

ULM/UT ARLINGTON SERIES NOTES –
Thursday's game marks the 79th meeting between ULM and UT Arlington, most against any opponent in ULM's history. The Warhawks lead the all-time series, 52-26, including a 30-10 record in games played in Monroe, Louisiana. UTA has won 10 of the last 12 meetings, and each of the last four games have been decided by single digits.

ULM's 62-55 overtime victory over UT Arlington on Jan. 15 gave the Warhawks their first win at Arlington since Feb. 20, 2016 (64-61). The Warhawks seek their first win against the Mavericks in Fant-Ewing Coliseum since Feb. 15, 2018, 84-71.

Keith Richard is 6-14 against UTA as ULM head coach.

THE LAST MEETING –
ULM 62, UTA 55 OT (Jan. 15, 2022, in Arlington, Texas): Nika Metskhvarishvili scored a career-high 23 points and Russell Harrison recorded his seventh career double-double with 17 points and a career-best 13 rebounds as ULM defeated Sun Belt Conference-leader UT Arlington in overtime, 62-55, Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks snapped a two-game losing streak in league play and ended a seven-game losing skid against the UTA by posting their first win in College Park Center since Feb. 20, 2016, 64-61. It also marked ULM's first overtime victory in Sun Belt play since Feb. 8, 2018, when the Warhawks outlasted Georgia Southern, 66-64, in Statesboro.

ULM played Saturday's game with only seven scholarship players. Starting guards Andre Jones and Koreem Ozier, who combine to average nearly 26 points per game, missed their second-straight game due to COVID protocols while guard Langston Powell, who started Thursday at Texas State, was a game-day scratch after developing flu-like symptoms.

There were 10 lead changes and four ties in this defensive struggle. The largest lead enjoyed by either team during regulation was only six points.

ULM put together a 9-0 run, with Metskhvarishvili accounting for seven points, to take a 19-14 lead with 5:19 left in the first half. Luke Phillips hit an 8-foot bank shot from left of the lane, off an assist from Elijah Gonzales, as the Warhawks built a 22-16 advantage with 2:23 on the clock. Carson Bischoff connected on a 3-pointer from the right wing to spark a 9-2 run over the final 2:05 as UTA (8-9, 4-2) took a 25-24 lead into the intermission.

The Mavericks scored the first five points of the second half and grabbed a 30-24 lead on Patrick Mwamba's traditional three-point play with 19:27 on the clock. Thomas Howell scored off a give-and-go from Metskhvarishvili to fuel a 9-2 spurt as ULM regained the lead at 38-37 on D'Marcus Hall's 12-foot fall-away jumper off an inbounds pass from Phillips with 8:12 left. It marked the Warhawks' first lead since 22-21 at the 1:42 mark in the opening half. UTA got back-to-back 3s from Mwamba and Nicolas Elame to reclaim a 43-38 advantage with 5:17 remaining. ULM cut its deficit to 46-44 on Howell's layup from Gonzales with 1:26 to play in regulation. Javon Levi missed the front end of a one-and-one with 24 seconds left, and with 12 seconds to go, Gonzales again found Howell for a layup to tie the score at 46-all. In the closing seconds, UTA's Brandyn Talbot missed an off-balance 3-pointer; Levi collected the long rebound and misfired on a shot from inside the paint.

ULM seized control of the game by scoring the first seven points in overtime. Howell hit a pair of free throws, Metskhvarishvili hit a right-handed hook shot from inside the lane and buried a deep 3-pointer from beyond the top of the circle as the Warhawks grabbed a 53-46 lead with 1:31 left in the extra period. ULM converted 7-of-8 free-throw attempts in the final 56 seconds to seal the victory, with Harrison hitting 5-of-6 from the stripe. His two free throws with 23 seconds on the clock gave the Warhawks' their biggest lead of the game at 62-53.

Metskhvarishvili and Harrison each netted seven points in overtime, accounting for 14 of ULM's 16 points. The Warhawks hit 3-of-7 field-goal attempts and 9-of-10 free-throws during the extra period while UTA went 1-of-5 from the floor, including 1-of-4 3s.

For the game, ULM shot 38 percent (20-of-53) from the field, including 5-of-18 from 3-point range (28 percent), and 68 percent (17-of-25) from the free-throw line. The Warhawks limited UTA to 17-of-60 field-goal shooting (28 percent), including 8-of-33 3-pointers (24 percent). The Mavs went just 13-of-24 (54 percent) from the line. After being outrebounded by six in the first half, ULM finished the game with a rebound margin of plus-1, 45-44. UTA had 18 offensive rebounds, but managed only eight second-chance points. The Warhawks also outscored the Mavs inside the paint, 28-16.

Metskhvarishvili posted his fourth 20-point game of the season, his third against Sun Belt opponents. He made 6-of-15 shots from the field, including 3-of-6 3s, and 8-of-11 free-throw attempts.

Harrison, who produced his third double-double of the season, has scored in double figures in 11 of his last 12 games. The Warhawks also got 10 points from Howell, who hit 4-of-7 field-goal attempts. Metskhvarishvili, Harrison and Howell combined to score 50 of the Warhawks' 62 points.

Gonzales, who played the full 45 minutes, contributed five points, six rebounds, nine assists and two steals. Williams, who had played a total of 50 minutes in five previous games, made his first career start and logged a career-best 41 minutes.

Mwamba paced the Mavericks with 20 points.

THE LAST TIME OUT –
ULM 75, Little Rock 72 OT (Feb. 5, 2022, in Little Rock, Ark.): Andre Jones scored a career-high 30 points in his homecoming game while leading ULM to a 75-72 overtime victory over Little Rock Saturday afternoon, as the Warhawks completed their first Sun Belt Conference road sweep since February 2018. His two free throws with 7.9 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime.

A fifth-year senior, Jones led two local Little Rock high schools, McClellan and Malvern, to state championships before spending his first two years as a collegian wearing the Trojan uniform while playing in the Jack Stephens Center. He opened ULM's two-game conference road swing with a 21-point performance in a 60-59 win at Arkansas State Thursday night.

It marked ULM's first Sun Belt road sweep since February 2018 when the Warhawks produced a pair of overtime victories at Georgia Southern (66-64) and Georgia State (90-82).

There were 15 ties and 18 lead changes in this highly entertaining matinee.

Koreem Ozier connected on two, deep 3-pointers and Jones scored on a drive to the basket as ULM took an early 8-5 lead with 16:07 left in the first half. Little Rock responded with a 7-0 run and grabbed a 12-8 lead as Jordan Jefferson hit a floater from the right side of the lane with 13:39 on the clock. The Warhawks reeled off seven-straight points and built a 17-14 advantage as Ozier buried another 3 from the top of the circle with 7:49 remaining. The Trojans got an 18-foot jumper from Isaiah Palermo and a 3-pointer from Myron Gardner as Little Rock built its largest lead at 26-21 with 3:52 to play in the opening half. ULM outscored the Trojans, 10-4, over the final 3:24 and carried a 31-30 lead into the intermission.

Ozier (12 points) and Jones (9) combined to account for 21 of ULM's 31 first-half points.

Jones hit a 3 from the left corner, off a cross-court pass from Ozier, and Ozier followed with a pull-up jumper from the left elbow as ULM (12-12, 4-8 Sun Belt) took its biggest lead at 36-32 at the 18:22 mark in the second half. Little Rock (7-13, 2-6) put together another 7-0 spurt and moved out to a 41-37 advantage on Jefferson's triple from the left corner with 15:04 left. Midway through the second half, Ozier hit a pair of free throws, Jones turned a steal into a dunk and Nika Metskhvarishvili made a layup, off a nifty feed from Russell Harrison, as the Warhawks regained the lead at 53-51 with 7:49 to play. Metskhvarishvili's traditional three-point play gave ULM a 56-54 edge with 6:49 on the clock, but the Trojans countered with a 9-2 run and matched their largest lead at 63-58 on Palermo's 3-pointer from the left wing with 4:30 remaining in regulation. Jones scored on a runner from the left side of the lane and Thomas Howell followed with a layup, off a pass from Elijah Gonzalez, as the Warhawks pulled to within one at 63-62 with 58 seconds left. Jefferson hit the first of two free throws – Little Rock's first point in 4:10 – for a 64-62 lead with 20 seconds to go. Jones calmly converted two free throws with 7.9 seconds to tie the score at 64-all.

ULM scored first in overtime as Metskhvarishvili hit a pair of free throws for a 66-64 lead. CJ White's three-point play put the Trojans back on top, 67-66. The Warhawks retook the lead at 68-67 on a pair of free throws by Jones, but Jefferson delivered a 3 from the right wing as Little Rock grabbed a 70-68 advantage with 2:59 on the clock. Howell drove the right side of the lane of a layup and Jones scored on a layup, off an incredible pass from Metskhvarishvili, as ULM claimed a 72-70 lead with 1:40 left. The Trojans pulled even one last time at 72-all as Palermo made two foul shots. The Warhawks closed out the win by converting 3-of-4 free-throw attempts in the final 18 seconds, with Johnnie Williams hitting 1-of-2 and Harrison both attempts. ULM held Little Rock without a field goal over the last 2:59 in overtime.

The Warhawks held a decided advantage in points in the paint, 32-16; fast-break points, 21-0; and bench points, 10-2. Little Rock outrebounded ULM, 34-26, but only managed to score eight points off nine offensive rebounds.

Jones, who played in front of nearly 20 family members and friends, connected on 10-of-17 field-goal attempts, including 3-of-5 3-pointers, and 7-of-8 free throws. He scored 17 of his 30 points after the intermission. Jones, who has scored in double figures in nine-straight games, also collected four assists.

ULM also got 16 points, four rebounds and three steals from Ozier, who fouled out with 5:13 left in the second half.

Harrison, who eclipsed the 1,000-point career milestone with two technical free throws with 1:10 remaining in the opening half, finished with 11 points. He scored 395 points as a freshman at Wayland Baptist in 2016-17 and now 613 for the Warhawks.

Gonzales, who rejoined the team in Little Rock after missing the last two games (Georgia State and Arkansas State) with a bruised knee, came off the bench and recorded five assists and four steals in nearly 31 minutes. He also didn't commit a turnover.

QUOTING KEITH RICHARD –
UTA scouting report:

"UTA's record is so misleading because it has been involved in so many close games. The Mavs have lost five of their last six games, but four of those games have been decided by five points or less. This team is a capable of creating some chaos down the stretch here in the regular season as well as competing for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title.

"David Azore is the most prolific scorer in the Sun Belt right now, averaging 19 points per game overall and more than 25 points in league play. Javon Levi is a great distributor of the basketball, and defensively, he does an outstanding job of applying constant ball pressure. KAO (Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu) is a tremendous rim protector and finisher.

"As a team, they have a number of players who have the ability to drive the ball and score inside. In addition, UTA ranks among the league's best defensive teams, allowing opponents to shoot only 41 percent from the field."

On the team's calm demeanor in Little Rock overtime win:
"We were down five points with 4 1/2 minutes left, but our guys didn't panic. We just wanted to find a way to get the game into overtime. We really had a difficult time defending Little Rock, but fortunately, we did a lot of good things in the late-game situations."

On Andre Jones' efforts to earn him Sun Belt and LSWA Player of the Week honors:
"After the team celebration had calmed down, I congratulated Andre Jones on playing two great games in his home state. Andre played his best two games of the season on this road trip. Despite playing our second game in three days, he still played with tremendous energy.

"Out of that last timeout with 14 seconds left, we wanted to get the ball in his hands because we knew he could beat somebody off the dribble and get to the rim. Andre did exactly that and knocked down a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to send the game into overtime. He made a lot of big baskets and free throws when the game was on the line."

On Koreem Ozier's contributions:
"Koreem Ozier played really good in the first half. Koreem and Andre carried our offense in the first 20 minutes. Things went a little sideways for him in the second half in terms of committing fouls."

On Elijah Gonzales' return to lineup:
"After the game, I also thanked Elijah for rejoining the team in Little Rock and we needed him. After missing the two previous games, he's as tired as he can be. I didn't plan to play him nearly this much, but he really helped us, especially in those late-game situations. Elijah controlled the offense by executing plays and distributing the basketball, but he also created some additional scoring opportunities for us with his defense. He came up with four big steals."
