MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (14-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) scored seven unanswered runs, including four in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 10-9 win over Georgia Southern (6-12, 1-1 Sun Belt) Saturday at the ULM Softball Complex. The Warhawks evened the series with the come-from-behind win as
Kennedy Page smacked the walk-off hit near the centerfield fence to plate the winning run. Page and
Kennedy Johnson combined for seven RBI as ULM compiled 12 hits on the afternoon.
Â
"I think our fans won that game for us," said ULM head coach
Molly Fichtner. "We had an incredible atmosphere with our fans there. It was fun. I don't think we've had a comeback quite like that. We started out rough, we got behind and there was a big deficit, but we just kept chipping away and passing the bat down, and we got a couple of runs here and there and getting hits and on base and it started the domino effect."
Â
Adrianna Chavarria earned her second win of the season, allowing only one run and struck out three in her three and two-thirds innings pitched. She faced six batters in the final two innings, retiring the Eagles in order to contribute to the win.
Â
"Rocky (
Adrianna Chavarria) is the one who put us in the position to win the game," Fichtner said. "She came in and did exactly what she is supposed to do and she keeps the score the same and gave our offense the opportunity to scratch some runs across. Their hitters were seeing the ball well and for her to go in there and do her job, she kept us in the game."
Â
Three Warhawks had three hits each with Johnson going 3-for-4 with four RBI, Page also recording a 3-for-4 day at the plate with three RBI and
Jacelyn Buck tallying two RBI with her 3-for-4 effort. Johnson, Page and Kreps scored six of ULM's runs with Bacon, Fletcher, Edwards and Chavez all crossing the plate in the victory.
Â
"I thought our hitters stayed composed," Fichtner said. "When you are down by that many runs, we're not going to go and swing for the fence. We needed base runners and they did a great job."
Â
Johnson homered for two runs after leadoff hitter
Korie Kreps walked in the first inning for an early 2-0 ULM lead. The Warhawks fell behind in the top of the third after Jess Mazur belted a grand slam and Janai Conklin had a solo home run for a 5-2 Georgia Southern advantage. ULM got a run back when Page led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run for a 5-3 score.
Â
The Eagles added three runs in the top of the fourth. Georgia Southern had back-to-back doubles to plate the first run. A batter hit by a pitch and single scored two more for an 8-3 Georgia Southern lead. Chavarria came in for the final two outs to end the Eagle threat. She would give up an unearned run, in the top of the fifth, when she issued a walk to Madi Banks and Banks stole second and scored on a throwing error that put Georgia Southern up 9-4.
Â
ULM would score in its next three innings, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Page led off with a single and moved to scoring position when Kreps reached base on an Eagle error. Both advanced a base when
Madelyn Fletcher grounded out and both scored when Johnson lifted her double into the left-centerfield gap.
Â
The Warhawks tacked on another run in the sixth when
Alexis Chavez drew a four-pitch walk and moved to second on a
Jacelyn Buck single. Chavez took third on a fielder's choice and scored when Page lined out to centerfield to reduce the deficit to a 9-6 Eagle lead.
Â
The final inning for ULM brought four runs across on four hits with the first four Warhawks up reaching base.
Lourdes Bacon led off with a single and moved over when Fletcher took first on an Eagle fielding error. Back-to-back singles by Johnson and
Andie Edwards brought in Bacon for a 9-7 score. Buck singled in two runs to tie the game at 9-all, bringing Johnson and Fletcher across the plate.
Madison Blount walked to load the bases again and Page's walk-off hit to the fence gave the Warhawks the only run they would need at that point for the 10-9 victory.
Â
"Tomorrow is championship Sunday," Fichtner said. "This is what matters, taking the series. We weren't satisfied with our performance (on Friday). It doesn't matter what our record is, it's W.I.N -- What's Important Now. We're learning and we have to make sure we don't make the same mistakes tomorrow."
Â
The final game of the series is set for Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. ESPN+ will have broadcast and live stats are available on the ULM softball schedule page at
