Troy Takes Second Game of Sun Belt Series from ULM Softball

Trojan Home Runs Lead to 9-1 Run-rule Win to Even Series

TROY, Ala. – The ULM softball team (16-7, 3-2) lost the second game of the series at Troy 9-1 as the Trojans used four home runs in the six-inning, run-rule win. The Warhawks tied the game at 1-all in the second inning, but Trojans broke the tie with runs in three consecutive innings. Troy (17-7, 3-2)'s three-run fourth inning gave the Trojans the lead and they extended it with four runs in the fifth inning.

"We just didn't have anything," said ULM head coach Molly Fichtner. "We didn't have hitting, we didn't have pitching, and we made three errors, two on the same play. We just didn't all-around play to win. It was one of those days where we definitely didn't come out and play ULM softball."

Troy's leadoff hitter Jade Sinness homered in the bottom of the first to give the Trojans their first lead of the series at 1-0. ULM tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second when Madelyn Fletcher doubled down the left-field line and scored on Jacelyn Buck's two-out single to left field.

Each team allowed a walk in the third inning and Troy's bats came alive in the fourth. The Trojans, who did not score in Friday's 1-0 opening game loss, plated three runs in the inning for a 4-1 lead. The scoring included solo home runs by Kelly Horne and Logan Calhoun and another Trojan run after back-to-back errors allowed a baserunner to score after a single and stolen base. Gianni Hulett replaced starter Kassidy Kackley, getting two outs and leaving one Trojan stranded.

Trojan Candela Figueroa hit a home run in the fifth with Kennedi Gaton on base to add two more runs to Troy's total. Calhoun singled, Sinness walked and Horne was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A single up the middle by Baker plated Calhoun and Sinness to give the Trojans a 7-1 lead.

A play at the plate kept another run from scoring and gave the Warhawks their second out, but left the bases loaded. Hulett, who faced 10 batters in the fifth, struck out the final Trojan to get out of the inning. Sinness, who went 3-for-3 on the afternoon and scored three runs, drove in her second RBI of the day for the final run in the bottom of the sixth for the 9-1 score.

In her second outing in as many days, Leanna Johnson (11-3) earned the win Saturday, allowing only three hits while striking out 11 Warhawks and walking only two in five innings of work. Libby Baker relieved Johnson for the sixth and final inning after the Trojans' had an eight-run margin. Kassidy Giddens dropped her record to 4-2 with the loss.
