ULM Tennis Completes Sun Belt Weekend Sweep; Defeats A-State, 4-1

MONROE, La. – The ULM women's tennis team completed its Sun Belt Conference weekend series sweep with a 4-1 victory over Arkansas State Sunday at Heard Stadium. With the win, the Warhawks, who posted a 4-3 win at the Ragin' Cajuns Friday to kick-off the weekend, improved to 3-1 in Sun Belt play. Overall, ULM (6-6) has won four of its last five matches.

Arkansas State grabbed the doubles point by taking two of three matches. The Red Wolves picked up their first win at No. 1 doubles as Thea Rice and Nejla Zukic defeated Oleksandra Balaba and Alessandra Anghel, 6-2, but ULM got a victory from its No. 2 pairing of Giovanna Pereira and Madalina Grigoriu over Yasmine Humbert and Sofia Vdovychenko, 6-2. A-State's No. 3 tandem of Emily Surcey and Hunter Roper came through with a 6-3 triumph over Hala Badwy and Jimena Garbino, 6-3.

ULM won four consecutive singles matches in straight sets to secure the team victory. Badwy set the tone early, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rice on court one to tie the match at 1-all. Anghel defeated Surcey on court two, 6-3, 6-1, and Garbino followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Vdovychenko on court five to give the Warhawks a 3-1 advantage. For the second time this weekend, Pereira clinched the match for ULM as she produced a 6-2, 6-4 win over Humbert on court six.

Both Balaba and Grigoriu led in their respective match-ups on courts three and four when Pereira won the decisive match.

"It feels great to win our third conference match as well as our fourth match in the last five played," first-year ULM tennis coach Abdelrahman Zaki said. "Give Arkansas State credit for starting doubles with lots of energy and for executing very well at the critical moments. We bounced back very strong and played our top level in the singles matches from start to end. We dominated all the matches and never gave our opponents a chance to get back into the match.

"We have been developing so much over the last four weeks. We will try to take advantage of the confidence we have built as we travel to Georgia for two matches next weekend."

The Warhawks will play their next four Sun Belt matches on the road, beginning with trips to Georgia Southern on Saturday, March 26 (10 a.m. ET) and Georgia State on Sunday, March 27 (10 a.m. ET).
