ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 5-2 win over ULM to open the three-game series Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (9-16 overall, 3-4 Sun Belt Conference) used four hits and an error to push across three runs in the first inning. Wilson Galvan reached on a fielder's choice, which included an error, to drive home Zach Henry for the 1-0 lead. Jaden Brown followed with an RBI infield single to third base, bringing home Oscar Ponce. Matt Cavanagh capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single to left to score Galvan, making it 3-0.
ULM (8-15-1, 3-3-1) starting pitcher
Cam Barlow (2-2) settled in after that, firing three scoreless innings before allowing two men to reach base in the fifth inning before exiting. A wild pitch and a groundout allowed those two runners to score for the 5-0 advantage. Barlow allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks in suffering the loss.
The Warhawk bullpen was solid behind Barlow, with
Nicholas Judice working 1 2/3 innings and
Chase DeJean and
Tylor Jans each throwing an inning.
However, ULM's offense couldn't solve UTA starting pitcher Tanner King (2-1). King threw a season-high seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. He allowed both runs in the seventh inning on
Travis Washburn's two-out, 2-RBI single to right-center field, scoring
Grant Schulz and
Landon Cato.
The Warhawks put men on base in the eighth and ninth innings, but Gray Bailey earned his first save with two shutout innings, recording five strikeouts.
Schulz had two hits to lead ULM. Cavanagh had three hits and two RBIs for UTA.
The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
