JACKSON, Miss. – Matthew Lee had two hits and three RBIs, both career highs, while
Mason Holt hit a 2-run home run as ULM rallied for an 8-3 win over Jackson State Tuesday afternoon at Braddy Field.
Lee, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, broke up JSU's no-hit bid with two outs in the fifth inning, hitting a flare down the right field line, dropping in for a base hit to score
Carson Jones from third, tying the game at 1.
Holt followed with a 2-run home run to left field, putting the Warhawks on top, 3-1. It was his team-best ninth home run of the season, all in the last 17 games.
After JSU got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, ULM added three more in the seventh.
Ryan Cupit was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Austin Beech, pushing the lead to 4-2.
Grant Schulz followed with a 2-RBI single to left, extending the lead to 6-2.
JSU answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh to get back within three, 6-3.
ULM put the game away in the eighth inning. Lee stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and sent a 2-RBI single to left, bringing in
Colby Deaville and
Trace Henry to push the lead to 8-3.
The two teams played in wet and muddy conditions with the game moved up three hours to 3 p.m. to try and avoid heavier storms later in the evening.
JSU starting pitcher Nick Johnson carried a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings before suffering the loss. He pitched five innings, allowing three runs on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Wyatt Blalock worked a perfect 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to earn the win, picking up one strikeout.
Henry Shuffler allowed just an unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks over three innings in the start.
Chase DeJean and
Carson Orton also worked scoreless innings for ULM.
The Warhawks open a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against the Ragin' Cajuns at 6 p.m. Thursday in Lafayette.
