Warhawks Salvage Sunday Game vs. App State, 8-5

MONROE, La. – Trace Henry and Travis Washburn had two hits and two RBIs each while Jackie Robinson and Carson Orton combined for 4 1/3 shutout innings on the mound to close the game as ULM held off App State's rally for an 8-5 win on Sunday to salvage a game from the series.

After scoring just one run with nine hits in the first 18 innings of the series, ULM (14-23-1 overall, 6-11-1 Sun Belt Conference) put the offense to work early in the series finale. Mason Holt hit a two-out solo homer to right-center field in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Warhawks their first lead of the series, 1-0.

ULM appeared to blow the game open in the five-run second inning. Colby Deaville led off with a walk and Chase DeJean followed with a walk. Travis Washburn hit a double to the right field corner to score both runners for the 3-0 lead. After Matthew Lee walked to put two runners on base again, Trace Henry tripled to the right field corner, pushing the lead to 5-0. Ryan Cupit added an RBI single to score Henry, as ULM led 6-0 after two innings.

App State (13-24, 5-13) made its move in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, App loaded the bases against ULM starter Tylor Jans with one out. RJ Johnson hit into a fielder's choice to first base, but Grant Schulz's throw home was a split second late, as Dylan Rogers scored ahead of the throw to cut the gap to 6-1. Andrew Terrell hit a sacrifice fly off of Lucas Wepf to score Austin St. Laurent, making it 6-2. Wepf got Luke Drumheller to ground out to end the threat.

In the fifth, App once again loaded the bases with two outs. Wepf walked the next three batters to walk in three runs, bringing the Mountaineers within a run, 6-5. Jackie Robinson came out of the bullpen to get Drumheller to ground out to end the frame.

Robinson (1-0) proceeded to throw 2 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen for his first career win, allowing three hits with one strikeout and no walks.

In the bottom of the seventh, ULM added to the lead as Schulz and Deaville each hit two-out RBI singles as Henry and Holt came home to score, respectively, for the 8-5 lead.

Carson Orton came out of the bullpen for the eighth inning and fired the final two shutout frames, pitching through rain in the ninth, to earn his fifth save of the season and 14th of his career, tying him with Bobby Carro (2001-02) for the second most saves in a career in ULM history. He allowed one hit with one strikeout and two walks.

App starter Cameron Carter (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 1 1/3 innings.

In addition to Henry and Washburn, Deaville and Holt had two hits each for ULM. Andrew Greckel, Dylan Rogers and Austin St. Laurent had three hits each for App as the Mountaineers pounded out 14 hits. However, App stranded 14 men on base in the game.

ULM visits McNeese for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday.
