ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington scored five runs across the first four innings and Maverick starting pitcher Cade Winquest held ULM without a hit until the sixth inning, as UTA won 5-2 and claimed the weekend series, two games to one, Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Winquest (1-1) threw a season-high seven innings, allowing just an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk to earn his first win of the year. David Moffat threw 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for his second save.
ULM (9-16-1 overall, 4-4-1 Sun Belt Conference) was limited to five hits for the game, with
Mason Holt collecting two of them, including an RBI single in the eighth inning.
UTA (10-17, 4-5) opened the game with a 2-RBI double by Wilson Galvan in the bottom of the first inning. The Mavericks chased ULM starter
Tyler Lien (1-2) after just one inning. He allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Warhawks cut the deficit in half in the third.
Caleb Sterling was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Trace Henry's sacrifice bunt moved Sterling to third. A fielding error on a ground ball by
Colby Deaville with two outs allowed Sterling to score, making it 2-1.
UTA answered back in the bottom of the third as Galvan led off with a double and eventually scored on Artie Ramirez's sacrifice fly to right, expanding the lead to 3-1.
The Mavericks took advantage of Warhawk mistakes in the fourth inning. Reliever
Mikel Howell hit the first two batters of the inning with pitches. Jaden Brown laid down a bunt in front of home plate.
Michelle Artzberger fielded the ball, but threw wildly back to first base, allowing two runners to score to stretch the lead to 5-1.
ULM was unable to generate any more offense until Holt broke through with a single to center with two outs in the sixth inning. Artzberger added a single with two outs in the seventh.
In the eighth inning, ULM had its best threat of the day.
Trace Henry led off with an infield single. After Deaville was hit by a pitch, Holt hit an RBI single to center to bring home Henry, putting runners on first and third with one out and the gap at 5-2. However, UTA made a pitching change to Moffat, who retired the next two hitters to end the inning.
Brown had three hits to lead UTA while Galvan had two RBIs.
ULM returns to action with a non-conference game at 4 p.m. Monday at Stephen F. Austin.
