MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama scored a run with two outs in the first inning and added two more runs in the fifth before holding off ULM's rally for a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field to sweep the series.
South Alabama (30-20 overall, 16-11 Sun Belt Conference) struck first in the bottom of the first inning, using a two-out single by Miles Simington and an RBI double by Landon Jordan to take a 1-0 lead.
Both starting pitchers kept the opposing offenses in check until the fifth inning. Joseph Sullivan hit a leadoff triple and Cameron Tissue was hit by a pitch. An errant pickoff throw allowed Sullivan to score and moved Tissue to third. Erick Orbeta's RBI single brought home Tissue for a 3-0 lead and chased
Tylor Jans (1-4) from the game.
Jans allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks while working four innings to take the loss. He faced three batters in the fifth.
ULM broke through on the scoreboard in the seventh inning.
Austin Beech led off with a double to the right field corner and scored on
Matthew Lee's double down the left field line to cut the gap to 3-1. A fly ball to right field by pinch hitter
Landon Cato moved Lee to third. A sacrifice fly by
Trace Henry scored Lee to bring ULM within a run, 3-2.
USA answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sullivan walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on another errant pickoff attempt. Orbeta's second RBI single of the game extended the Jaguar lead to 4-2.
The Warhawks were unable to get anything going in the final two innings against Eli Runyan and Hunter Stokes, outside of a two-out single by
Carson Jones in the ninth inning. Stokes threw the final 2/3 of an inning for his second save.
Walker Johnson (4-2) earned the win, allowing two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk over six innings. He faced two batters in the seventh inning.
Beech had two hits to lead ULM as nine different Warhawks had a hit. ULM racked up 10 hits in the contest. Orbeta had two hits and two RBIs to lead USA, while Simington also had two hits.
ULM closes the regular season with a three-game series against Arkansas State, starting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Warhawk Field.
