Ilunga Mbuyi Wins Second Gold Medal; ULM Collects 10 Total Medals at SBC Outdoor Championships

LAFAYETTE, La. – ULM freshman Eunice Ilunga Mbuyi won her second gold medal in the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, finishing first in the triple jump Saturday (May 14) with a distance of 42-3 1/2 (12.89m). Ilunga Mbuyi recorded her top distance in the sixth round while setting the Ragin' Cajun Track Facility-record for the triple jump. She won her first gold medal in the long jump (20-2 1/2; 6.16m) Friday afternoon.
 
Ilunga Mbuyi becomes the first woman in ULM history to win multiple gold medals in the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She also becomes the first ULM female student-athlete to record multiple first-place finishes in an outdoor championship since Loretta Curry won a pair of gold medals, in the 100 and 200 meters, in the 1995 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships in Denton, Texas.
 
The ULM women's and men's teams combined to earn 10 total medals, including seven on Saturday with three individuals as well as the women's 4x400 relay reaching the podium. In addition, the teams combined to score in 12 different events (five women's and seven men's) on the final day of competition.
 
The ULM men's team claimed two medals Saturday as junior Keith Robinson won the silver in the 100 meters, posting a season-best time of 10.24, and freshman Ali Eren Unlu took home the bronze in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 7-0 1/4 (2.14m).
 
The women's 4x400 relay team of Brittney Roberson, Jasmine Williams, Kimone Campbell, Fiebe Tengrootenhuysen seized the bronze medal while setting the school record with a time 3:41.78.
 
The ULM women scored 28 points Saturday and finished tied for seventh with App State in the final team standings with 51 points. It matched the Warhawks' highest point total since the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships in Denton, Texas. Arkansas State won its third consecutive women's conference outdoor title with 157 points.  
 
Ilunga Mbuyi (10) and the 4x400 relay (6) combined to account for 16 of women's 28 points on Championship Saturday. The Warhawks scored points in three other events during the final day of competition as sophomore Kimone Campbell placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:09.97), Roberson finished five in the 400 (season-best time of 55.40) and Williams took sixth in the 400m hurdles (personal-best time of 1:00.68).
 
The ULM men tallied 26 points Saturday and finished 10th in the team standings with 37 points. South Alabama claimed its first-ever men's conference outdoor championship with 148.5 points, finishing 11.5 points ahead of second-place Arkansas State (137).
 
Robinson (8) and Unlu (6) combined to account for 14 of the men's 26 points on the final day of competition. ULM scored points in five other men's events on Championship Saturday, including three sixth-place finishes.
 
Senior Riley Finnegan, who posted his top distance in the sixth round, placed sixth in the discus at 164-1 (50.03m). The 4x100 relay team of Joseph White, Jhavonte Perry, Brandon Lewis and Robinson tied its best time of the season at 40.78 to finish sixth while Perry also clocked a personal-best time of 21.06 in the 200 meters to clinch sixth.
 
The ULM men's team also got points from sophomore Stephen Mengich, who ran a 3:55.08 in the 1,500 meters to finish seventh, and the 4x400 relay team of White, Perry, Lewis and Juan Loredo, which placed eighth after posting a season-best time of 3:15.27.
 
Up next, ULM women's and men's student-athletes who rank among top 48 in their respective event(s) will earn a berth in the 2022 NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, scheduled for May 25-28 in Bloomington, Indiana.
