Trace Henry had three hits, including two RBI doubles, and two walks, senior
Mason Holt had two hits, including his 16th home run of the season, and senior
Lucas Wepf threw four shutout innings out of the bullpen for the win as ULM completed its only sweep of the 2022 season with a 6-3 win over Arkansas State Saturday at Warhawk Field.
It is the first sweep of a Sun Belt Conference opponent for ULM since the Warhawks swept Georgia State in Atlanta on April 5-7, 2019.
The Warhawks controlled Saturday's game throughout, scoring single runs in each of the first three innings. Senior
Grant Schulz hit an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first inning to score Henry. Henry hit his first two-out RBI double in the second inning to plate
Travis Washburn from first base. Holt led off the third inning with a home run to push the lead to 3-0.
ULM extended the lead in the sixth inning when Washburn tripled with two outs and Henry followed with another RBI double for the 4-0 advantage.
Arkansas State broke through in the seventh inning as Cooper Tremmel hit an RBI single and Wil French hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Warhawks answered in the bottom of the seventh as
Austin Beech hit an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch to push the lead back to four, 6-2.
A-State scored a run in the ninth for the final margin.
Cole Cressend threw just 16 pitches in two perfect innings in the start with two strikeouts. Wepf (2-5) followed behind Cressend with four shutout innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts and two walks for the win.
Starting pitcher Carter Holt (0-3) took the loss for Arkansas State, giving up three runs on four hits with one strikeout and three walks.
The Warhawks are the 10th seed for the Guardian Credit Union Sun Belt Baseball Championship and will face seventh-seeded Georgia State in the first game of the tournament at 3 p.m. Tuesday. It is a single elimination game with the winner advancing to the double elimination bracket on Wednesday.
