ULM Softball Falls in Both Games of Saturday Doubleheader

Ragin’ Cajuns Use Clutch Hitting and Long Ball in Wins

MONROE, La. – The No. 22/23 Ragin' Cajuns took both games of Saturday's doubleheader by 10-3 scores over ULM (27-26, 10-17) to close out the Sun Belt Conference regular season. The Warhawks had 12 combined hits, 11 of which were singles, with one home run, and left six runners stranded in each game.

"With a team like that, we know they are going to score and we just have to control the big innings," said ULM head coach Molly Fichtner. "The big innings are what really got us. The last game, we had a lot of runners in scoring position, more so than we have had. We were doing better as far as getting people on; we were just missing that really big hit."

In game one, ULM took a 3-1 lead after plating three runs in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Madison Blount hit her second home run of the year after Korie Kreps and Madelyn Fletcher walked to account for the Warhawks' three runs. Blount had two hits, including her home run, and Alexis Chavez added two toward the Warhawks' five total. The Ragin' Cajuns (41-11, 23-4) scored first with a single run in the top of the inning and took advantage of two big innings with five runs scored in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Five singles and two walks produced the five runs for ULL in the fourth inning. With two runners on in the fifth, a double drove in two more runs for an 8-3 Ragin' Cajun lead. A two-out single plated another run and a sacrifice fly put the score at 10-3. Lead-off batter Stormy Kotzelnick was responsible for four RBI and scored two runs with two hits. Kramer Eschete also had two hits and scored two runs.

The Ragin' Cajuns relied on the long ball in game two to compile their 10 runs with five home runs and nine hits total. ULM responded with two runs in the second inning after ULL went up 1-0 on a solo home run in the first inning. Jacelyn Buck led off with a single and pinch-runner Caley McGuff moved to second on Blount's sacrifice bunt. Fletcher singled to drive in McGuff and then scored on Lourdes Bacon's bunt single.

Megan Schorman (13-4) earned the win in game one, pitching 5.2 innings in relief without giving up any runs.

ULL did its damage in the fourth inning again in game two with six runs coming across. Three mutli-base hits, including two two-run home runs, and two walks, allowed the Ragin' Cajuns to bring 10 batters to the plate. Langeliers went two-for-three with two runs scored and an RBI. Her lead-off home run in the sixth inning put the score at 8-2.

The Warhawks responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Alexis Chavez singled to lead off the inning and moved to second safely on an error when Gabby Davila hit into a fielder's choice. Kennedy Johnson singled to left to bring Chavez in to cut the deficit to 8-3. A two-run home run by the Ragin' Cajuns in the top of the seventh settled the score at 10-3.

Chavez had two hits in game two and Johnson, Fletcher and Bacon each had one RBI. Victoria Abrams (7-9) started and pitched 3.1 innings in both games and was tagged with both losses.
