ULM Notebook: With Rogers at QB, No Reason to Fret for Warhawk Receivers

ULM quarterback Chandler Rogers has a lot of mouths to feed in the passing game this season.

"We feel as a team that receivers are a strength," Rogers said. "I have all faith in them, no matter who it is, what the route is or what the coverage is. I trust those guys."

It was wide receiver Jevin Frett's turn to eat Saturday night in ULM's 35-7 win over Nicholls State. Making his first start of the season, Frett delivered a team-leading six catches for 71 yards and one touchdown. The reception and yardage totals were both new career highs for the fifth-year senior from Manchester, Connecticut.

"If you are really hot that night, then the ball will find you," Frett said. "You just have to help the team if you're not getting the ball, just block and do what you can."

Even after several early drops by ULM receivers, Rogers was able to finish 20-of-25 passing (80 percent) for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Rogers completed passes to 10 different players.

"Chandler played with such poise," ULM coach Terry Bowden said. "I know we dropped at least three of his passes early, then he was about 20 of 25. It was just a magnificent night of either throwing for the first down or running just enough for the first down, managing our offense and knowing exactly what each play needed."

"He was really sharp," Frett added. "He didn't miss a beat and just kept going to us."

ULM took a while to get rolling offensively and trailed Nicholls 7-0 after one quarter. One of the game's pivotal plays came when Rogers found former walk-on Alred Luke for a 68-yard reception that set up ULM's first touchdown. Luke led ULM in receiving yards with 72 on three catches.

"That was the one that did it," Bowden said. "It's funny. It's a game of inches. That ball was almost intercepted. That guy went for the interception and Luke made him miss. I'll have to get on him, because he didn't outrun everybody, but it was a huge play. We scored and that kind of turned it back around and got us going."

ULM scored 35 unanswered points, including 21 in the second quarter, to finish the contest.

"We work too hard not to go out and show the world we can win," Frett said. "We just had to turn it up and play our game."

AD update: ULM president Ron Berry discussed the search for a new athletics director during his halftime radio interview with Mike Hammett.

"I've been making phone calls to folks around the country and people have been calling me," Berry said. "We will have a committee set up and do that national search and find someone, hopefully that has Division I experience, successful experience as an athletic director. Hopefully find someone that's a great fit with our mission and the athletic programs that we've got going on.

"Our goal is to have one as soon as possible, but no later than January 1."

Scott McDonald announced his resignation as AD in mid-August. Berry appointed ULM's Chief Strategy Officer Seth Hall as interim AD until a permanent hire is made.

"Seth and I have had a working relationship for a quite a while," Berry said. "He's someone that has a very strong background in operations and efficiencies. I think he's going to do a fabulous job for us, keeping things steady and stable while we reach out and do a national search for an athletic director."

Belt loops: The Sun Belt Conference enjoyed a banner day Saturday with several milestone wins sending shockwaves throughout the world of college football.

New member Marshall started it off with a 26-21 win over No. 8/9 Notre Dame. Appalachian State kept the Sun Belt shining with a 17-14 victory over No. 6/6 Texas A&M, and Georgia Southern knocked off Nebraska, 45-42.

Including ULM's win over Nicholls, Sun Belt programs posted 10 victories over non-conference foes in Week 2.

"It's been a big day for the Sun Belt Conference," Bowden said. "I'm glad we were able to do our part."

Following App's impressive performance, ESPN's College GameDay will head to Boone, North Carolina, on Saturday, Sept. 17, when Troy comes to town for the first Sun Belt Conference game of the season.
