Warhawks Top HBU, 3-1, Record First Tournament Sweep in 32 Years

HOUSTON – For the first time in 32 years, the ULM volleyball team completed the sweep of a weekend non-conference multi-team event, picking up a 3-1 win (25-8, 28-26, 8-25, 25-19) Saturday over host Houston Baptist at the Molly Howard Gerwig Memorial Tournament.

The Warhawks defeated Bethune-Cookman, 3-0, and UC Riverside, 3-1, on Friday to open the tournament.

ULM last won every match at a non-conference multi-team event in 1990. It is the fifth time in program history the Warhawks have accomplished the feat.

Madeline Williams was named the MVP of the tournament, while Cameron Rogers and Logan Jeffus were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

"I'm beyond proud of this team," ULM head coach Charlie Olson said. "All weekend long we continued to make improvements and adjust to the emotional ebbs and flows. Each match we improved in every facet of our game. We still have plenty of room for improvement, but I'm so excited about the growth we had this weekend.

"We had lots of 'firsts' for us this weekend, including first time wins against all three opponents. We will continue to dissect our game for improvements, but we will also celebrate our successes. This will be a fun bus ride home, then back to work on Monday. Thanks to all our fans and supporters this weekend. They were and are amazing."

The Warhawks dominated the first set, coasting to a 25-8 win. ULM hit .333 in the set while limiting HBU to -.105. ULM used 4-0 and 6-0 runs early to build out to a 16-4 lead. The Warhawks then scored the final six points of the set, with two kills by Brynn Botkin and four HBU attack errors pushing the Warhawks over the top.

In the second set, ULM led 23-18 before HBU rallied and held off five ULM set points before finally giving way as Botkin and Madeline Villarreal picked up back-to-back kills for the 28-26 win.

HBU reversed course from the first set in the third set, rolling to a 25-8 win to stay alive, 2-1.

ULM closed out the match in the fourth set. After a rough third set, the Warhawks started and finished the fourth set hot. ULM scored the first six points of the fourth set, using three service aces from Kailey Friedrich and three errors by HBU to race out to the lead. HBU surged back to take the lead at 9-8 and again at 10-9, but a 4-0 run put ULM back up, 13-10, on a kill by Villarreal. Leading 20-18, ULM then scored five of the next six points to win the match, securing the victory on an ace by Rogers, 25-19, for the 3-1 win.

Botkin led ULM with 13 kills while Williams added 11. Bailey Roberson added 33 assists while Rogers had 17 digs, Taylor Thomas tallied 15 and Callie Humphrey added 13.

ULM visits Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
