2022-23 ULM WBB Notes: Game 17 vs. Southern Miss

THE STORYLINE –
ULM concludes its four-game road trip at Sun Belt-newcomer Southern Miss (11-5, 4-1) on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. The Warhawks' playing rotation features five players who are averaging better than 7.0 points per game. Graduate center Emma Merriweather has recorded three consecutive double-doubles, averaging 14.0 points, 13.3 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots per game while connecting on 63 percent of her field-goal attempts (17-of-27) during that streak. Southern Miss leads the all-time series, 16-8, including an 11-1 record in games played in Hattiesburg.

THE TIPOFF –
• Saturday's game marks the 25th meeting between ULM and Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series, 16-8, including an 11-1 record in games played in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss has won the last two games; however, the teams have split the last 10 meetings overall. ULM's last win in the series came on Dec. 9, 2012, 73-55, in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks have dropped three games in a row in Reed Green Coliseum, with their last road win coming on Dec. 28, 2005, 75-67.

• ULM graduate center Emma Merriweather posted her third-straight double-double with 16 points (6-of-9 FG shooting) and 15 rebounds in Thursday's 92-74 loss at Troy. Her rebound total matched her season high, and her five blocked shots equaled her career best. Over the last three games, Merriweather is averaging 14.0 points, 13.3 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots while connecting on 63 percent of her field-goal attempts (17-of-27).

The 6-foot-5 Merriweather, who recorded back-to-back double-doubles as the Warhawks earned a road split against Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina, was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, as selected by the league's head coaches and communications directors.

She tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds in ULM's 73-71 victory at Coastal Carolina last Saturday, as the Warhawks ended a 22-game road losing skid (tied with Bellarmine for the nation's second-longest streak), including 19 straight in conference play. It marked ULM's first Sun Belt road win since defeating Texas State, 58-55, on Jan. 16, 2020. Merriweather also matched her season high with four blocked shots and set a career high with four steals against the Chanticleers.

A native of Buena Park, California, Merriweather scored a game-high 16 points and collected 14 rebounds (five offensive boards) in a 63-49 loss at ODU. She connected on 7-of-10 attempts from the field while contributing three blocked shots and two steals.

Merriweather leads ULM in rebounding (8.5 rpg.) and ranks as the co-leader in scoring (8.8 ppg.). On a minutes-played basis, those statistics are equivalent to 17.7 points, 17.2 rebounds and 4.4 blocked shots per game.

She ranks among the Sun Belt's Top Three in four different statistical categories: first in rebounding (8.5 per game), first in blocked shots (2.2 per game), second in offensive rebounding (3.6 pg.) and third in field-goal percentage (.591). Her 33 blocked shots rank No. 13 in NCAA Division I.

A transfer from Kansas, Merriweather scored a career-high 30 points and collected a season-high 15 rebounds against Champion Christian and contributed 13 points and 10 boards against Central Arkansas.

• ULM's playing rotation features five players who are averaging better than 7.0 points per game, including red-shirt senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy (8.8 ppg.), graduate center Emma Merriweather (8.8 ppg.), sophomore forward Katlyn Manuel (7.5 ppg.), sophomore guard Bre Sutton (7.4 ppg.) and sophomore guard Olivia Knight (7.1 ppg., team-leading 20 3-pointers). Seven different Warhawks have led the team in scoring this season.

The 5-foot-9 Brimzy also has scored in double figures nine times this season. She matched her season high with 18 points (8-of-15 FG shooting) to go along with seven rebounds in ULM's 73-71 road win at Coastal Carolina, hitting a pair of free throws with 4.5 seconds left to break a 71-all tie.

Brimzy recorded her first career double-double against Champion Christian, finishing with 13 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. She also scored 18 points in the opener against Louisiana Christian.

• As a team, ULM ranks fifth in the Sun Belt Conference and No. 42 in NCAA Division I in offensive rebounds, averaging 14.3 per game. In addition, the Warhawks are listed among the league leaders in five additional statistical categories: first in blocked shots (4.8 pg.), fourth in assists (13.8 pg.), fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.8), sixth in steals (9.3 pg.) and sixth in turnover margin (+1.9 pg.).

• ULM head coach Brooks Donald Williams returns to Hattiesburg, where she spent three seasons as an assistant coach to USM's Joye Lee-McNelis from 2004-07. Williams also was an assistant for McNelis at Memphis in the 2003-04 season. In her 19th season at Southern Miss, McNelis needs one more win to reach the 300 milestone.

27.8 – The ULM bench has outscored the opponents' reserves in 10 of the first 16 games while providing 27.6 points per game. The bench has accounted for 30 points or more in five games: 35 in the season opener against Louisiana Christian, a season-high 62 points against Centenary, 43 against Champion Christian, 35 against Alcorn and 30 at Troy. The Warhawk bench enjoyed a +54 scoring margin against Centenary (62-8). Overall, ULM's bench has outscored its opponents' reserves by 82 points, 444-362.
