ULM Drops Final Game of Road Trip at Southern Miss, 77-57

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Domonique Davis and Jacorriah Bracey combined for 27 points to lead Southern Miss to a 77-57 Sun Belt Conference victory over ULM Saturday in Reed Green Coliseum, as USM head coach Joye Lee-McNelis recorded her 300th win in her 19th season at the school.

Southern Miss (12-5, 5-1 Sun Belt), which never trailed, put together a 10-3 run midway through the first quarter to take a 19-10 lead on a pair of free throws from Rose Warren with 1:53 on the clock. ULM scored seven of the next eight points and cut its deficit to 20-17 on Olivia Knight's deep 3-pointer from the top of the circle with 41 seconds left in the opening period.

Amani Brown hit an 18-foot jumper from the left baseline to open the second quarter as the Warhawks pulled to within one at 20-19. Southern Miss responded with a 10-0 spurt to build a 30-19 advantage as Davis made 1-of-2 free-throw attempts with 6:58 on the clock. The Lady Eagles made five consecutive field-goal attempts during one stretch and extended their lead to 35-23 on a layup from Chardai Watkins with 4:39 remaining. ULM (6-11, 2-4) reeled off six-straight points to trim the margin to six points at 35-39 as Aasia Sam hit 1-of-2 shots from the free-throw line with 1:20 to play in the first half. Lani Cornfield converted a Watkins steal into a layup with 41 seconds on the clock and Femi Funeus made another layup with 2 seconds left as the Lady Eagles carried a 39-29 lead into the intermission.

Southern Miss maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half. The Lady Eagles, who shot 54 percent (7-of-13) from the field in the third quarter, led by as many as 19 in the period and took a 59-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Knight buried her third 3-pointer of the game and Katlyn Manuel scored on an offensive rebound as ULM clawed back to within 11 at 59-48 with 8:37 to go in the final period. The Warhawks made just one of their last seven shots from the floor and went 8:04 between made field goals. Southern Miss built its largest lead at 77-55 on Morgan Dillard's jumper in the paint with 43 seconds on the clock.

"Southern Miss is one of the best teams in our league," ULM head coach Brooks Donald Williams said. "They have been playing extremely well. They have a balanced inside-out attack with Davis and (Melyia) Grayson and have other key pieces that stepped up big today.

"We just couldn't get things going. We would get a good stop and turn it over or take a quick shot or we would get a solid offensive possession and give up a big play defensively. We didn't have consistency in our play."

As a team, Southern Miss made 29-of-67 field-goal attempts (43 percent), including 4-of-13 (31 percent) from behind the 3-point arc, while ULM finished 19-of-51 from the floor (37 percent), including 3-of-10 from 3 (30 percent). The Lady Eagles outrebounded the Warhawks, 41-33, and forced 21 turnovers, with 13 of those coming in the second half. Southern Miss held an advantage in points off turnovers, 19-12; second-chance points, 14-9; and bench points, 29-22.

Davis, who hit 6-of-10 shots from the field, led the Lady Eagles with 14 points, six assists and four steals. Southern Miss also got 13 points from Bracey and 11 each from Melyia Grayson and Cornfield.

ULM's Emma Merriweather connected on 6-of-11 shots from and floor and finished with a game-high 16 points. Merriweather, who reached double figures in scoring for her fourth-straight game, also collected seven rebounds (four offensive boards) and three blocked shots.

"I thought Emma battled," Williams said. "She turned some tough catches into points. She crashed the boards and had several strong finishes."

Knight and Amaya Ford added nine points each for the Warhawks.

After going 1-3 on its four-game road swing, ULM plays its first home game since Dec. 31, 2022, on Thursday, Jan. 19 against Texas State at 6:30 p.m. It marks the first of four consecutive games in Fant-Ewing Coliseum where the Warhawks are 5-4 this season.

"It has been a long stint on the road," Williams said. "We are excited to get back to Monroe and get back to work in front of our fans."
