2022-23 ULM WBB Notes Game 18 vs. Texas State

THE STORYLINE –
After going 1-3 on its recent four-game road swing, ULM (6-11, 2-4 Sun Belt) plays its first home game since Dec. 31, 2022, on Thursday, Jan. 19 against Texas State (12-5, 4-2) at 6:30 p.m. It marks the first of four consecutive games in Fant-Ewing Coliseum where the Warhawks are 5-4 this season. ULM's playing rotation features five players who are averaging better than 7.2 points per game. Graduate center Emma Merriweather leads the Warhawks in scoring (9.3 ppg.), rebounding (8.4 rpg.) and blocks (2.3 pg.) Merriweather is averaging 14.5 points and 11.8 rebounds over her last four games, including three double-doubles.

THE TIPOFF –
• Saturday's game marks the 63rd meeting between ULM and Texas State. The Warhawks lead the all-time series, 32-30, including a 17-12 record in games played in Monroe, Louisiana. However, Texas State has won 10 of the last 11 meetings, including the last seven in a row. ULM's last win in the series came on Jan. 16, 2020, 58-55, in San Marcos, Texas.

The Bobcats have won six-straight games in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. ULM last won on its home floor in this series on March 4, 2017, 61-59.

• Graduate center Emma Merriweather leads ULM in scoring (9.3 points per game), rebounding (8.4 rpg.), blocked shots (36) and field-goal percentage (.586; 58-of-99). On a minutes-played basis, those statistics are equivalent to 18.3 points, 16.7 rebounds and 4.5 blocked shots per game. She has scored in double figures seven times this season, including four-straight games.

Her five double-doubles are tied for second (with ODU's Amari Young) in the Sun Belt Conference, trailing only Georgia Southern's Terren Ward who has posted six.

Merriweather is averaging 14.5 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots over her last four games, including three consecutive double-doubles. During that four-game stretch, she has connected on 61 percent of her field-goal attempts (23-of-38). She made 6-of-11 shots from the floor and finished with a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds (four offensive boards) and three blocked shots at Southern Miss last Saturday. Merriweather posted her third-straight double-double with 16 points (6-of-9 FG shooting) and 15 rebounds at Troy last Thursday. Her rebound total matched her season high, and her five blocked shots equaled her career best.

The 6-foot-5 Merriweather, who recorded back-to-back double-doubles as the Warhawks earned a road split against Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina, was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, as selected by the league's head coaches and communications directors.

She tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds in ULM's 73-71 victory at Coastal Carolina, as the Warhawks ended a 22-game road losing skid (tied with Bellarmine for the nation's second-longest streak), including 19 straight in conference play. It marked ULM's first Sun Belt road win since defeating Texas State, 58-55, on Jan. 16, 2020. Merriweather also matched her season high with four blocked shots and set a career high with four steals against the Chanticleers.

A native of Buena Park, California, Merriweather scored a game-high 16 points and collected 14 rebounds (five offensive boards) at ODU. She hit 7-of-10 attempts from the field while contributing three blocked shots and two steals.

Merriweather ranks first or second in four different statistical categories in the Sun Belt: first in rebounding (8.4 pg.), first in blocked shots (2.3 pg.), second in field-goal percentage (.586) and second in offensive rebounding (3.6 pg.). Her 36 blocked shots rank No. 15 in NCAA Division I.

A transfer from Kansas, Merriweather scored a career-high 30 points and collected a season-high 15 rebounds against Champion Christian and contributed 13 points and 10 boards against Central Arkansas.

• ULM's playing rotation features five players who are averaging better than 7.2 points per game, including graduate center Emma Merriweather (9.3 ppg.), red-shirt senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy (8.3 ppg.), sophomore forward Katlyn Manuel (7.5 ppg.), sophomore guard Bre Sutton (7.3 ppg.) and sophomore guard Olivia Knight (7.2 ppg., team-leading 23 3-pointers). Seven different Warhawks have led the team in scoring this season.

The 5-foot-9 Brimzy also has scored in double figures nine times this season. She matched her season high with 18 points (8-of-15 FG shooting) to go along with seven rebounds in ULM's 73-71 road win at Coastal Carolina, hitting a pair of free throws with 4.5 seconds left to break a 71-all tie.

Brimzy recorded her first career double-double against Champion Christian, finishing with 13 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. She also scored 18 points in the opener against Louisiana Christian.

• As a team, ULM ranks fifth in the Sun Belt Conference and No. 40 in NCAA Division I in offensive rebounds, averaging 14.2 per game. In addition, the Warhawks are listed among the league leaders in five additional statistical categories: first in blocked shots (4.7 pg.), fourth in assists (13.6 pg.), sixth in offensive rebound percentage (.337), sixth assist-to-turnover ratio (0.8) and seventh in steals (8.9 pg.).

• Second-year sophomore guard Bre Sutton is averaging 11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists over her last four games. The 5-foot-9 Sutton has reached double figures in scoring three times during that stretch, including her first career double-double at Coastal Carolina, with a season-high 16 points and a career-best 13 rebounds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS –
500 – Three ULM players have scored more than 500 career points, including sixth-year senior center Diamond Brooks (603), fourth-year junior guard Gara Beth Self (590) and sixth-year senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy (523).  Graduate center Emma Merriweather needs 27 more points to join the 500-point club.

128 – Super senior Diamond Brooks has appeared in more games (128) than other player in ULM history. Brooks is one of only six players who have played in at least 120 career games, joining Jasmine Shaw (123 games from 2010-14), Alexar Tugler (122, 2010-14), Elizabeth Torres (121, 2008-12), Larrie Williams (120, 2008-12) and Alayshia Hunters (120, 2012-16).

77.8 – True freshman Myca Trail ranks 11th in the Sun Belt Conference in free-throw percentage, hitting 35-of-45 attempts.

70 – The Warhawks are 5-1 this season when scoring 70 or more points.

33.4 – ULM, which ranks fifth in the Sun Belt Conference and 40th in the NCAA Division I in offensive rebounding at 14.2 per game, has collected 33.7 percent (206 of 612) of its rebounds off the offensive glass. Center Emma Merriweather (58 of 135; 43%) and forward Katlyn Manuel (37 of 83; 45%) rank 1-2 on the team in offensive rebounds.

27.8 – The ULM bench has outscored the opponents' reserves in 10 of the first 17 games while providing 27.4 points per game. The bench has accounted for 30 points or more in five games: 35 in the season opener against Louisiana Christian, a season-high 62 points against Centenary, 43 against Champion Christian, 35 against Alcorn and 30 at Troy. The Warhawk bench enjoyed a +54 scoring margin against Centenary (62-8). Overall, ULM's bench has outscored its opponents' reserves by 75 points, 466-391.

22.2 – ULM is generating 22.2 percent (245 of 1,104 points) of its offense from the free-throw line – the highest percentage of any Sun Belt Conference team. Only three other league teams are creating at least 20 percent of their points from the charity stripe: 21.6 by Louisiana Lafayette, 21.2 by Georgia State and 20.4 by James Madison. ULM has outscored 11 of its opponents from the free-throw line (5-6 record). The Warhawks rank among the NCAA Division I Top 20 in free-throw attempts: No. 16 at 22.7 per game. That total is good for third in the Sun Belt, trailing only Georgia Southern (23.8 FTA pg.) and Troy (23.5 FTA pg).

10 – Depth is an obvious strength of ULM's 2022-23 team as 10 different players are averaging at least 11.3 minutes per game.
