2022-23 ULM WBB Notes: Game 19 vs. Georgia Southern

THE STORYLINE –
ULM (6-12, 2-5 Sun Belt) plays its second of four consecutive Sun Belt Conference games in Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 21 against Georgia Southern (12-4, 4-3) at 2 p.m. The Warhawks are 5-5 at home this season while averaging nearly 70 points per game (69.7 ppg.). ULM's playing rotation features five players who are averaging better than 7.0 points per game. Graduate center Emma Merriweather leads the Warhawks in scoring (9.6 ppg.), rebounding (8.6 rpg.) and blocks (2.5 pg.) Merriweather is averaging 13.8 points and 11.6 rebounds over her last five games, including four double-doubles.

THE TIPOFF –
• Saturday's game marks just the 13th meeting between ULM and Georgia Southern. The all-time series is tied 6-6, including a 3-3 record in games played in Monroe, Louisiana. Georgia Southern has won the last three meetings in the series, including an 83-68 victory in Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Feb, 24, 2022.

ULM's last wins in the series came during a regular-season sweep in 2018-19: 58-57 in Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Jan. 10, 2019, and 80-62 in Statesboro, Ga., on Feb. 9, 2019.

• Graduate center Emma Merriweather leads ULM in scoring (9.4 points per game), rebounding (8.6 rpg.), blocked shots (43) and field-goal percentage (.590; 62-of-105). On a minutes-played basis, those statistics are equivalent to 18.0 points, 16.5 rebounds and 4.9 blocked shots per game. She has scored in double figures eight times this season, including five-straight games.

Her six double-doubles are tied with Georgia Southern's Terren Ward for the most in the Sun Belt Conference this season.

Merriweather is averaging 13.8 points, 11.6 rebounds and 4.4 blocked shots over her last five games, including four double-doubles. During that five-game stretch, she has connected on 61 percent of her field-goal attempts (27-of-44). She finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high seven blocked shots against Texas State Thursday. Merriweather made 6-of-11 shots from the floor and posted a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds (four offensive boards) and three blocked shots at Southern Miss. She recorded her third-straight double-double with 16 points (6-of-9 FG shooting) and 15 rebounds at Troy. Merriweather also blocked five shots against the Trojans.

The 6-foot-5 Merriweather, who recorded back-to-back double-doubles as the Warhawks earned a road split against Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina, was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, as selected by the league's head coaches and communications directors.

She tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds in ULM's 73-71 victory at Coastal Carolina, as the Warhawks ended a 22-game road losing skid (tied with Bellarmine for the nation's second-longest streak), including 19 straight in conference play. It marked ULM's first Sun Belt road win since defeating Texas State, 58-55, on Jan. 16, 2020. Merriweather also matched her season high with four blocked shots and set a career high with four steals against the Chanticleers.

A native of Buena Park, California, Merriweather scored a game-high 16 points and collected 14 rebounds (five offensive boards) at ODU. She hit 7-of-10 attempts from the field while contributing three blocked shots and two steals.

Merriweather ranks among the top three players in four different statistical categories in the Sun Belt: first in rebounding (8.6 pg.), first in blocked shots (2.4 pg.), second in offensive rebounding (3.6 pg.) and third in field-goal percentage (.590). Her 43 blocked shots rank No. 13 in NCAA Division I.

A transfer from Kansas, Merriweather scored a career-high 30 points and collected a season-high 15 rebounds against Champion Christian and contributed 13 points and 10 boards against Central Arkansas.

• ULM's playing rotation features five players who are averaging better than 7.0 points per game, including graduate center Emma Merriweather (9.4 ppg.), red-shirt senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy (8.1 ppg.), sophomore forward Katlyn Manuel (7.9 ppg.), sophomore guard Olivia Knight (7.2 ppg., team-leading 25 3-pointers) and sophomore guard Bre Sutton (7.1 ppg.). Seven different Warhawks have led the team in scoring this season.

The 5-foot-9 Brimzy also has scored in double figures nine times this season. She matched her season high with 18 points (8-of-15 FG shooting) to go along with seven rebounds in ULM's 73-71 road win at Coastal Carolina, hitting a pair of free throws with 4.5 seconds left to break a 71-all tie.

Brimzy recorded her first career double-double against Champion Christian, finishing with 13 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. She also scored 18 points in the opener against Louisiana Christian.

• As a team, ULM leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks No. 19 in NCAA Division I in blocked shots, averaging 5.1 per game. The Warhawks also rank fourth in the league and No. 38 in NCAA Division I in offensive rebounds, averaging 14.3 per game. In addition, the Warhawks are listed among the league leaders in three additional statistical categories: fourth in assists (13.5 pg.), fifth in offensive rebound percentage (.345) and sixth assist-to-turnover ratio (0.83).

• Second-year sophomore guard Bre Sutton is averaging 9.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists over her last five games. The 5-foot-9 Sutton has reached double figures in scoring three times during that stretch, including her first career double-double at Coastal Carolina, with a season-high 16 points and a career-best 13 rebounds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS –
500 – Three ULM players have scored more than 500 career points, including sixth-year senior center Diamond Brooks (605), fourth-year junior guard Gara Beth Self (590) and sixth-year senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy (527).  Graduate center Emma Merriweather needs 16 more points to join the 500-point club.

129 – Super senior Diamond Brooks has appeared in more games (129) than other player in ULM history. Brooks is one of only six players who have played in at least 120 career games, joining Jasmine Shaw (123 games from 2010-14), Alexar Tugler (122, 2010-14), Elizabeth Torres (121, 2008-12), Larrie Williams (120, 2008-12) and Alayshia Hunters (120, 2012-16).

77.8 – True freshman Myca Trail ranks 11th in the Sun Belt Conference in free-throw percentage, hitting 35-of-45 attempts.

70 – The Warhawks are 5-1 this season when scoring 70 or more points.

34.5 – ULM, which ranks fourth in the Sun Belt Conference and 38th in the NCAA Division I in offensive rebounding at 14.3 per game, has collected 34.5 percent (257 of 745) of its rebounds off the offensive glass. Center Emma Merriweather (62 of 146; 42%) and forward Katlyn Manuel (42 of 90; 47%) rank 1-2 on the team in offensive rebounds.

26.9 – The ULM bench has outscored the opponents' reserves in 10 of the first 18 games while providing 26.9 points per game. The bench has accounted for 30 points or more in five games: 35 in the season opener against Louisiana Christian, a season-high 62 points against Centenary, 43 against Champion Christian, 35 against Alcorn and 30 at Troy. The Warhawk bench enjoyed a +54 scoring margin against Centenary (62-8). Overall, ULM's bench has outscored its opponents' reserves by 71 points, 484-413.

21.6 – ULM is generating 21.6 percent (251 of 1,161 points) of its offense from the free-throw line – the highest percentage of any Sun Belt Conference team. Only five other league teams are creating at least 20 percent of their points from the charity stripe: 21.4 by Louisiana Lafayette, 21.4 by Georgia State, 20.4 by James Madison, 20.3 by Texas State and 20.0 by Coastal Carolina. ULM has outscored 11 of its opponents from the free-throw line (5-6 record). The Warhawks rank among the NCAA Division I leaders in free-throw attempts: No. 25 at 22.0 per game. That total is good for third in the Sun Belt, trailing only Georgia Southern (23.4 FTA pg.) and Troy (23.3 FTA pg).

10 – Depth is an obvious strength of ULM's 2022-23 team as 10 different players are averaging at least 10.0 minutes per game.

"WE BACK PAT" GAME –
The ULM women's basketball program has designated Saturday's Sun Belt Conference contest against Georgia Southern as this season's "We Back Pat" Game in honor of the late legendary Coach Pat Summitt and to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease and funds for research. In 38 seasons as the head women's basketball coach at Tennessee (1974-2012), Summitt compiled a career record of 1,098-208 (.841), including 18 trips to the NCAA Final Four and eight National Championships.

In 2011, Pat Summitt and her son Tyler established the Pat Summitt Foundation, with the hope that one day, no family has to hear that a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The Foundation focuses on advancing research for treatment and a cure, providing care and support for patients and caregivers, and educating the public about Alzheimer's disease. She passed away on June 28, 2016.

Today, members of the ULM women's basketball team and its coaching staff will wear T-shirts in support of the Pat Summitt Foundation and the "We Back Pat" Campaign. In addition, the first 100 fans will receive Pat Summitt bookmarks, highlighting her career coaching accomplishments, information about the Foundation as well as ways to support the mission to defeat Alzheimer's disease.
