2022-23 ULM WBB Notes: Game 15 vs. Coastal Carolina
 
THE STORYLINE –
Following a 63-49 loss at Old Dominion Thursday, ULM (5-9, 1-2) plays its second of four consecutive road games at Coastal Carolina (6-8, 1-2) on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. ET. It marks the first meeting between ULM and Coastal since Feb. 27, 2020, when the Chanticleers defeated the Warhawks, 88-69, at the HTC Center. Coastal leads the all-time series 3-2, with all games played as members of the Sun Belt Conference.  ULM seeks its first Sun Belt road win since defeating Texas State, 58-55, on Jan. 16, 2020.
 
THE TIPOFF –
• Following a 63-49 loss at Old Dominion Thursday, ULM (5-9, 1-2) plays its second of four consecutive road games at Coastal Carolina (6-8, 1-2) on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. ET. It marks the first meeting between ULM and Coastal since Feb. 27, 2020, when the Chanticleers defeated the Warhawks, 88-69, at the HTC Center. Coastal leads the all-time series 3-2, with all games played as members of the Sun Belt Conference.
 
ULM seeks its first Sun Belt road win since defeating Texas State, 58-55, on Jan. 16, 2020. The Warhawks have lost 22 consecutive road games (tied with Bellarmine for the nation's second-longest active streak), including 19 straight in conference play.
 
• Saturday's game marks only the sixth meeting between ULM and Coastal Carolina and the first since Feb. 27, 2020, when the Chanticleers defeated the Warhawks, 88-69, at the HTC Center. The only scheduled meeting between the two teams last season, Jan. 20, 2022, in Conway, S.C., was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns within the Coastal program. The squads also didn't meeting during the 2020-21 campaign as the Sun Belt Conference played a division-only schedule format in response to the pandemic.
 
Coastal leads the all-time series 3-2, including a 2-1 record in games played in Conway. Behind Arsula Clark's 18-point effort, ULM posted a 60-57 win over Coastal on March 2, 2019, in the HTC Center. Clark, who played all 40 minutes, also posted five rebounds, seven assists and five steals. The Warhawks built a 16-point third-quarter lead but had a withstand a furious CCU rally in the fourth quarter.
 
• Red-shirt senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy and sophomore forward Katlyn Manuel (8.6 ppg. each) combined to average 17.2 points per game to pace a well-balanced scoring attack.
 
The 5-foot-9 Brimzy also has scored in double figures eight times this season. She recorded her first career double-double against Champion Christian, finishing with 13 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. Brimzy scored a season-high 18 points in the opener against Louisiana Christian.
 
The 6-1 Manuel also has scored in double figures in eight games, including four of the last six contests. She matched her season-high with 16 points (6-of-12 FG shooting) at McNeese and posted her second career double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds (6 offensive boards) in the 2022-23 season opener against Louisiana Christian.
 
ULM's playing rotation features two other players who are averaging better than 7.5 points per game, including graduate center Emma Merriweather (8.2 ppg.) and sophomore guard Olivia Knight (7.6 ppg., team-leading 19 3-pointers). Seven different Warhawks have led the team in scoring this season.
 
• Graduate center Emma Merriweather ranks as ULM's leading rebounder (7.8 rpg.) and third-leading scorer (8.2 ppg.). On a minutes-played basis, those statistics are equivalent to 17.8 points, 17.1 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots per game.
 
The 6-foot-5 Merriweather leads the Sun Belt Conference in field-goal percentage at .592 (42-of-71) and ranks among the league's Top 10 in three additional statistical categories, including second in blocked shots (1.8 pg.), second in offensive rebounding (3.5 pg.) and sixth overall in rebounding (7.8 pg.).
 
Merriweather recorded her third double-double of the season and seventh of her career, scoring a game-high 16 points to go along with 14 rebounds (5 offensive boards) at Old Dominion Thursday. She connected on 7-of-10 attempts from the field while contributing three blocked shots and two steals.
 
A transfer from Kansas, Merriweather scored a career-high 30 points and collected a season-high 15 rebounds against Champion Christian and contributed 13 points and 10 boards against Central Arkansas.
 
• As a team, ULM ranks third in the Sun Belt Conference and No. 38 in NCAA Division I in offensive rebounds, averaging 14.5 per game. In addition, the Warhawks are listed among the league leaders in six additional statistical categories: first in blocked shots (4.6 pg.), fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.9), fourth in assists (13.7 pg.), fifth in turnover margin (+2.9 pg.), sixth in offensive rebounding percentage (.342) and tied for seventh in steals (9.2 pg.).
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS –
500 – Three ULM players have scored more than 500 career points, including sixth-year senior center Diamond Brooks (600), fourth-year junior guard Gara Beth Self (578) and sixth-year senior guard/forward Kierra Brimzy (503).  Graduate center Emma Merriweather needs 69 more points to join the 500-point club.
 
82.1 – True freshman Myca Trail ranks fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in free-throw percentage, hitting 32-of-39 attempts.
 
34.4 – ULM, which ranks third in the Sun Belt Conference in offensive rebounding at 14.5 per game, has collected 34.4 percent (173 of 503) of its rebounds off the offensive glass. Center Emma Merriweather (46 of 102; 45%) and forward Katlyn Manuel (34 of 77; 44%) rank 1-2 on the team in offensive rebounds.
 
27.9 – The ULM bench has outscored the opponents' reserves in nine of the first 14 games while providing 27.9 points per game. The bench has accounted for more than 30 points in four games: 35 in the season opener against Louisiana Christian, a season-high 62 points against Centenary, 43 against Champion Christian and 35 against Alcorn. The Warhawk bench enjoyed a +54 scoring margin against Centenary (62-8). Overall, ULM's bench has outscored its opponents' reserves by 97 points, 390-293.
 
10 – Depth is an obvious strength of ULM's 2022-23 team as 10 different players are averaging at least 10.8 minutes per game.
